USA Weather Alert and Warnings Thread

Again, many older homes in Oklahoma were not built for extreme cold. Mine was built before indoor plumbing - the water lines exposed to the air coming up from the ground.
Many who I warned to turn off the water at the main are now dealing with bursting pipes as the temps rise.

I feel for you!! Showering at truck stops or what not for so many days!!

Best Products To Prepare Your Home For Winter

It’s important to weatherproof your home, insulating those key areas where heat might escape (and run up your bills), as well as repair any areas that could impact the structural integrity of your home. According to the CDC, here’s a few important inspection tips:

  1. Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows
  2. Insulate water lines along exterior walls
  3. Install storm windows or cover with plastic from the inside
  4. Inspect your chimney or flue each year
  5. Install a smoke detector and battery-operated carbon monoxide detector
  6. Upgrade your thermostat

You must have really bad experience with garden faucets bursting! I simply cover them with a fabric made for freezes and I don't even let indoor faucets drip. Or maybe I am just being lucky!

It is about 12 F / -10 C right now. Hard frozen some front steps because doesn't get much sun.

WTH? You haven't got enough snow there for a decent snowball fight.

Coyotes prowling the frozen Boston harbor. They may make it to Europe. :p

Groundhog Day 2026: Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, predicting 6 more weeks of winter

I heard Phil has an accuracy of 35%. I am puzzled why it is not 50%. Coin toss, which is equivalent to Phil's prediction, seems to do better.

What? Winter has been lasting longer and Phil is predicting longer winter for the years. I'd say he is about 80% accurate, no?!!
"The Seer of all Seers, the Prognosticor of all Prognosticator" is accurate, sir! ;)

Because Phil is not a meteorologist. He is part of cultural folklore meant to create the excuse for a festival in a small town mid-winter to liven things up. And he serves that role wonderfully. :D

Live it up some, O ye with little faith! ;)

Yup. But there is another arctic wave incoming for the weekend. February gets to be a bit tedious.

Oh no! We Southerners have enough of the snow/ice. I am still sore from clearing just enough ice from the front pavers yesterday to be able to walk finally walk on them after 8-9 days. No more!

I think this will spare the South, but we will be in the negatives Sat-Sun-Mon.

Groundhog Day 2026: Did Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow?

Here's Punxsutawney Phil's annual prediction.

Renee Straker

Drumroll please! The groundhog known as Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning. That means we could see six more weeks of winter, at least according to Groundhog Day lore.

The was the fifth time in the last six years that Phil has seen his shadow, and the 20th time since 2000.

Phil’s prediction comes on the heels of back-to-back winter storms, so it's no surprise that some in the crowd booed, unhappy with the furry seer's prognostication.

Winter Storm Gianna dropped more than a foot of snow in the South over the weekend, and bitterly cold temperatures have spurred freeze and extreme cold warnings across much of the East today.
