New York City Mayor Urges Citizens Stay Off Roads

As Winter Storm Hernando gets ready to intensify this weekend in the Atlantic, officials along the East Coast are issuing emergency declarations and urging residents to stay home.

At a press conference on Saturday afternoon, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized the dangers of the storm, particularly the expected massive snowfall on Sunday and the extremely hazardous possibility of icy sidewalks and roads during Monday morning’s commute hours.

He also added the city’s “Code Blue” emergency protocol, which includes expanded outreach and immediate access to shelter for homeless individuals and anyone without heat.

WHAT...Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations between 18 and 25 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph

.WHERE...Portions of central, northern, and northwest New Jersey.WHEN...Until 6 PM EST Monday.

IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches and result in isolated power outages.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snowfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour. Locally higher snowfall amounts and significant drifting of snow possible.
