French voters on Sunday morning turned out in record numbers in the first round of a high-stakes snap election that could usher in a far-right government and shake the EU to its core.

At noon local time, 25.9 per cent of voters had already cast their ballot, compared with 18.43 per cent in 2022 — the highest turnout in more than four decades, according to Ipsos researcher Mathieu Gallard.

Voter participation is a key factor in this election because it will help determine how many of President Emmanuel Macron’s Ensemble candidates qualify for next week’s final round of voting.Macron called for the unexpected legislative poll earlier this month after losing European parliamentary elections to the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) by a wide margin.

Although the move stunned the public and angered many even in his own camp, Macron defended it as a “moment of clarification” for citizens to decide who they wanted to govern the country given the steady rise of Marine Le Pen’s RN party.

Macron also argued that the National Assembly, where his centrist alliance lost its outright majority in 2022, was riven by “disorder” that made legislating difficult.

The turnout rate at 5pm was 59,39%. In 2022 at the same hour it was 39,42%. So nearly +20%. Let's see who it will benefit.

It is starting to feel like "Good Bye Macron" ... Netherlands went right wing, and now France.

Interesting/Hard times ahead for sure...

First estimates as of 8pm.

National Rally : 34,2%
New popular front (union of leftist parties) : 29,1%
Together (Macron's party) : 21,5%
The Republicans : 10%.

Of course we shoudln't look at nationwide results as they wouldn't give us a credible projection of seats as we have to look at each of France's 577 constituencies and the second round next sunday.

Can the RN form a government, possibly with a coalition? That would send some shockwaves.

Europe is moving towards right wing. It will be hard time for coloured people, especially Muslims, some nations have already banned the hijab.

Blame Macron for spending too much money on his personal Russia Ukraine war of glory. There's an old saying. Live by the sword. Die by the sword.

This is how much various countries have spent defending Ukraine:

France's help is welcome and much appreciated. But to call it 'too much' is incorrect. Denmark, Netherlands and Poland have given more.

France was already teetering on the edge with protests being common. There's an old saying. The camel's back was broken by a straw.

Pretty hard to tell as of now as there's still 502 constituencies where a second round will take place.

I think we're in for a surprise as I highly doubt republican and macron voters will vote for the new popular front candidates. Everything will then depend on the turnout rate and local alliances. That's why no one should take seriously polls out there.

As of now after the first round ;

National Rally and allies : 38 seats won
New popular front (union of leftist parties) : 32 seats won
Together (Macron's party) : 2 seats won
Miscellaneous right : 2 seats won
The Republicans : 1 seat won
