What book are you reading?

How would you rate Agent Sonya?
*Agent Sonya* by Ben Macintyre is a riveting true story of espionage, centered on Ursula Kuczynski, a remarkable Soviet spy operating under the alias Sonya. Macintyre masterfully recounts her daring missions across multiple countries, her ability to evade detection, and her dual life as a spy and mother. The book is a thrilling blend of history and intrigue, offering a fascinating glimpse into the shadowy world of Cold War espionage. A must-read for fans of spy stories and historical nonfiction. My rating is 3.5 out of 5. This authors best work still is The spy and The Traitor. The main takeaway for me was how many women were so successful as spies in early years of intelligence agencies specially in the 20th century was that men underestimated them. Simply put ego of many men led them to not believing that a women could be a spy or running an spy network.

I would also love to get the book written by Jaishankar son.

Along with Accessory to War also started reading American Prometheus. The Triumph and Tragedy of Robert J Oppenheimer. Let say how reading two books simultaneously goes.

@markhor et al.

I'm wondering if I should create a new thread solely for Maths, Physics etc and quote all our conversation for its basis (I have started to look at some of my earlier notes and my bookshelf, and I think I have settled on what my next set of replies + book recommends will roughly be when I have some time for it).....rather than clog up this thread with more of it.

Or we can continue here too.

Depends on what you guys think.

Yes,PLEASE!!!

Another one, since this is a hot topic these days, eigen stuff is also employed in some neural network models (ewww - the disdain I have for the modern AI paradigm and its peasantry and patheticness, the so-called deep learning, is unfathomable; but that's a discussion for another time),

Please if you do not mind, briefly opine why?

@Nilgiri I hope you are doing well. Have you read Remembrance of Earth's Past triliogy by Liu Cixin? Also, I will be very grateful if you can DM me, there's something that I wish to discuss with you.

Haven't read that one. Will have to look into it. Are you planning to read it or already done?

I have 1/3 of the book and put it down. It was so incredible that I had to mentally prepare myself to continue reading it later. It is considered by many to be the greatest sci-fi work of all time. The most shocking thing to me was that this Chinese trilogy was never banned in China, in fact, the author got hailed by the government instead.

Certainly sounds interesting, I looked it up on amazon and wiki etc...I'll probably read first one over a long flight/trip....as I love sci-fi as you know.

Can this author match or exceed my musketeers?

Verne, Clarke, Heinlein (...with Asimov as D'artagnan).

(Putting aside Herbert which I consider a more fantasy genre, and lovecraft similarly)

(Also putting aside the screenwriting of Lucas and Roddenberry ofc too, since these are visually paced)

But why would it be banned in China in this post 80s era?

Netflix attracted controversy and a ban inside China it seems by starting its take during the cultural revolution. Maybe I'll watch that too later, it was suggested by cpl buddies I know, I just never got around to it.

But that was their decision (i.e they are outside China), generally Chinese authors inside China know the inner realpolitik to work with.

Because it portrayed the Cultural Revolution in the most horrific manner, Netflix's adapatation of this trilogy isn't anywhere near as good as the books. I have heard that the Chinese adaptation is way better than the Netflix one.
