No, just regular cooking oil iinw, at least at ours'

there was this thick marble ka masala peesing bowl which was repurposed as a diya.. works great aesthetically and also fits nicely in front of their chhotu mandir, like a wee marble dollhouse.

Shiv Ji is our clan's main god, so him, and a lingam and nandi.. nanaji ki photu bhi hai.

Yes.
That is for the ritual fire at home, for Diwali, for zillions of lamps all over, anything goes.
Even today, my sister does this ritual, but the first pass is in front of portraits of my parents. The lamp returns to rest in front of those portraits, and burns the night long.

Let me put it this way, unless you clean and cook your own food, and its always been in your line of sight, whatever you eat is always a healthy mixture of blind trust and assumption bordering oftentimes on prefer not to know what we cannot see.

And this holds good for the fanciest Michelin star restaurants with one of the food handlers in the kitchen having a bad day.
