Why Is Pakistan Selling Its Electricity Companies?

In FY25, Pakistan's electricity distribution companies lost about Rs 400 billion to excess line losses and unpaid bills, and now the government is moving to privatise them, starting with Faisalabad (FESCO), Gujranwala (GEPCO) and Islamabad (IESCO). In this episode of PowerPlay, we look at July 2026's power generation numbers, break down where the DISCOs are failing on losses, load-shedding and bill recovery using NEPRA's own data, and explain how those failures reach your monthly bill. We then walk through the privatisation plan, what the K-Electric and Turkey precedents can and can't tell us, and the questions that still have no answers.
