PLA converts Y-20B military transport aircraft to WS-20 units​

The Chinese army leadership has begun converting heavy Y-20B transport aircraft to domestically developed WS-20 engines. Previously, these aircraft flew with Russian D-30KP-2 power plants.

Domestic engines are inferior to the WS-20 in thrust – 118 kN versus 128 kN. Also, the maximum payload capacity of the aircraft has increased from 60 to 66–70 tons. Now, the Y-20B can transport the latest Chinese "Type 99A" tanks with full ammunition without restrictions.

Russia supplied China with a total of 463 D-30KP-2 engines between 2009 and 2020. The total value of all contracts exceeded $1.4 billion.

Deliveries were carried out in three major waves through Rosoboronexport, with ODK-Saturn acting as the manufacturer.

It should be noted that Russian Il-76MD and Il-78 transport aircraft still fly with D-30KP-2 engines.

I think it is still going to be labeled as the WS-20 just like the WS-10B from the J-10B.

And the Pakistan air force has also confirmed the afterburner thrust of the WS-10B being 145 KN.

China’s Y-20B is increasingly being presented as more than a strategic airlifter, with new evidence suggesting that the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) is exploring ways to use the aircraft across a much broader range of missions. A recent documentary broadcast by Chinese state media highlighted the platform’s ability to support aerial refuelling operations while also pointing to potential applications involving cruise missiles, electronic warfare and airborne early warning.

The development reflects a broader shift in how the PLAAF appears to be approaching large aircraft. Rather than designing separate platforms for every specialised mission, China is increasingly exploring modular configurations that could allow the same airframe to be adapted according to operational requirements. The Y-20B’s large internal volume and payload capacity make it particularly suitable for this approach, with mission-specific pods and equipment potentially transforming its role without requiring an entirely new aircraft.


This concept would give the PLAAF access to a single platform capable of moving between strategic airlift, tanker, electronic warfare, early warning and potentially offensive missions. Chinese sources cited by Global Times have described the Y-20B in precisely these terms, suggesting that the distinction between traditional transport aircraft and specialised support or combat platforms is becoming less rigid.

The aircraft’s propulsion system is another important element of the programme. Unlike the original Y-20A, which relies on Russian-supplied D-30KP engines, the Y-20B is powered by the domestically developed WS-20 turbofan. Produced by Aero Engine Corporation of China, the engine represents a major step in China’s effort to reduce its dependence on foreign propulsion technology while improving the aircraft’s overall performance.

The WS-20 is expected to provide the Y-20B with greater range and improved operating characteristics, potentially extending the geographic reach of PLAAF airlift and support missions. That additional endurance becomes particularly relevant when considering China’s growing requirement to sustain forces and installations well beyond the mainland.

The concept was underscored by Pang Rongqi, a member of a PLAAF aviation unit, in comments featured in a China Central Television (CCTV) documentary: “As an airlift platform, the Y-20 is unique in our country and will play an increasingly important role in the future. The boundaries between transport aircraft and bombers, early warning aircraft or even electronic warfare aircraft are becoming increasingly blurred. It is possible that all of these missions could be carried out with our airlift platform.”

A strategic tool for China’s expanding air power​

The Y-20B’s potential evolution is significant because it could allow the PLAAF to generate several different capabilities from a common airframe. This approach would not only reduce the need to develop and maintain entirely separate fleets, but could also allow China to rapidly adapt its aircraft to changing operational requirements.

The Y-20 has already demonstrated its value as a strategic transport platform. In 2022, six PLAAF Y-20 aircraft were used to transport HQ-22 surface-to-air missile systems to Serbia, providing a prominent demonstration of China’s ability to conduct long-distance military airlift operations. Beyond the political repercussions of that deployment, the mission illustrated the geographic reach that the Y-20 fleet can provide to Chinese military operations.

The emergence of the Y-20B as a potential multi-role platform would take that capability considerably further. An aircraft originally conceived to move personnel, equipment and heavy military cargo could potentially be configured to provide aerial refuelling, intelligence and surveillance, electronic attack or even long-range strike support.

This flexibility could prove particularly valuable for China’s military posture across the Indo-Pacific. Beijing has been expanding its network of forward military positions and infrastructure in the South China Sea, increasing the importance of reliable air connections between mainland bases and more distant deployments.

In a contingency, Y-20B aircraft could therefore serve as an aerial logistics backbone for Chinese forces operating away from the mainland while also providing specialised capabilities that would otherwise require several different aircraft types. The combination of strategic range, modularity and the domestically produced WS-20 engine could make the Y-20B an increasingly important component of the PLAAF’s efforts to extend its operational reach.

Rather than simply replacing older Chinese transport aircraft, the Y-20B is emerging as part of a broader Chinese effort to blur the traditional boundaries between transport, support and combat aviation. If the capabilities highlighted by Chinese state media progress beyond experimentation, the platform could become one of the most flexible large aircraft in the PLAAF inventory.
