Karachi News Updates

Yes same chaudhary chacha Saleem who conducted census for the wardi wadera mafia and declared Karachi's population to be only slightly higher than Lahore's when it's easily double
How was karachis population only slightly declared higher than lahores. The 2023 census showed that khi population is over 20 million against lahores 13 or 14 million. That is a difference of about 6 or 7 million people.I also want to know that the fertility rate in rural sindh is higher, than how come the rest of sindh had a lower growth rate than karachi.

1. You're the one bringing in 'worthless ethno-regional politics'
2. No insecurities here - just want Karachi cleaned-up and developed. You're just projecting your own victim complex on to others. The guy was simply lamenting why is Karachi neglected, though it is an economic powerhouse - you decided to take it as an affront to punjabis for some reason.
3. Uneducated opinions? Just like you did before?
4. Nope - tumhari jageer nahi hai daggay.
We people of Karachi dont do ethno chauvinism, Karachi had always stood for all of the Pakistan, so the militarocracy took the capital to Punjab, that was the message to East Pakistan also.
Now Karachi has been successfully disenfranchised, Altaf Hussain has a big role in that also, but figure out what? GHQ brought MQM again to assemblies.
If Karachi does not get the complete metropolitan status, then Karachite have no option but to seek help from anywhere they can get.

Your fellow dagga makes a comment you agree with, and all the 'eDuCaTeD ReSpOnSe' nonsense goes out the window?
No sir, plz don't use ethnic naming.

Karachi population has always been rigged. That was decided at the highest level.
There is a silent agreement on that between Sindhi ruling class, Punjabi aristocracy and bureaucracy, and the one and only the GHQ.

Karachi's population is easily around 30 million, it can swallow Lahore twice, but counting 30 million people accurately for Karachi prevents f@ujeets from giving their favorite A team of PPP looters and goons free hand in Karachi and Sindh.

Since very old times, from the 1st census in 1973. If you have any report where census was rigged for political reasons and to deprive a city of its due share, plz present.
Wherever it is done, it is crime against humanity.
Here excerpt from Dawn.

In 1973, the then Home Secretary of Sindh Mohammad Khan Junejo changed the census figures of Karachi from 6 million to 3 million. I (sic: Azadi bin Haider) held a press conference the next day and exposed the wrongdoing and was ultimately arrested and later released.

Later the home secretary was also arrested and during his trial he submitted a confessional statement in which he admitted that he changed the figures. A Karachi-based reporter obtained a copy of a confessional statement in which the home secretary stated that he changed the figures under the order of senior officials so that the provincial and National Assembly seats of Karachi may be decreased.

During 2024 elections karachi had about more or less than 10 million registered voters. If we accept your figure than not even half of karachis population is registered in the voters lists.

Why exactly 30? Why not 28.6 or 29.7 million. Even then it's been years since you been stuck at 30 million, given the average growth rate, when do you intend to upgrade your propaganda syllabus?

Pakistan’s metropolitan city Karachi roads are all set to welcome five diesel-run double-decker and another 34 EV (electric vehicle) buses in January 2026, Sindh government officials told Business Recorder.

After a gap of six to seven decades,
the double-decker buses will run on roads in the fast growing populous city also known as the Pakistan’s economic hub and the city of two seaports.

The Sindh government has imported as many as 39 buses, including five double-decker and 34 EV buses, at a cost of Rs3 billion from China.

The vehicles are in the process of getting clearance from the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) these days, it was learnt.

“We have planned to run the double-decker buses on Shahrah-e-Faisal in Karachi via Model Colony to/from Tower route as soon as the buses get clearance from the port,” Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto said.

“The double-decker buses have seating arrangements for about 115-120 people. They are air conditioned (AC) vehicles. The top-roof of the buses can be uncovered during pleasant weather, and the roof can remain in place during sunny and rainy weather. The buses are being introduced on a heavy public route; the Model Colony-Tower route,” she elaborated.

A big quantum of the import price was paid in Customs and other import taxes.
Sindh transport minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has planned to formally roll-out the newly imported buses on the city roads in a ceremony to be held later this week or the next week - depending upon the availability of the high provincial officials, according to Bhutto.

The five diesel-run double decker buses are being run in the phase, as the provincial government aims to import more buses for the city’s heavy populous routes in the next phase.

“Besides, Sindh government will run EV buses on new routes, including on Gulshan-e-Maymar.to/from Tower and extend Peoples Bus Service to four new cities and district in the upper Sindh; Hyderabad, Khairpur, Sukkur and Shikarpur soon,” Bhutto said.

“We are considering whether to import more diesel-run double-decker buses or import EV double-decker buses in the upcoming phase.”

To recall, the city used to run double-decker buses in 1960’s and even up to 1970’s.

A senior citizen named Naseem Ahmed recalled Gujrat transport company used to run the double decker buses in Karachi sometime between 1958 and 1970.

‘Heavy import taxes’

The Sindh government imported the 39 buses at a cost of Rs3 billion.

“A big quantum of the import price was paid in Customs and other import taxes,” Bhutto said, estimating the taxes carried a bigger half of the import cost.

She said the provincial government has already introduced an automated fare payment/collection system via its plastic card called ‘Breeze’ on three routes under Peoples Bus Service.

“This automated fare collection system is being integrated on Green and Orange line routes, meaning a traveller can make fare payment via one card on both the lines instead carrying two payment cards on the two different lines.

“In the future, the same payment system will get integrated on Red and Yellow lines as well,” she said.

The double-deckers have some nostalgia associated with them for the early Karachiites.

It is a good move. Cities in developing countries need to focus on mass transit rather than personal vehicles.

Double-decker bus inaugaration in Karachi on December 31

KARACHI: After nearly 50 years, double-decker buses have returned to Karachi’s streets, with a trial service launched on Wednesday from Malir to Sharea Faisal and up to Zainab Market.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, along with Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, inaugurated the service. Officials also briefed the ministers on the features and operations of the newly introduced buses.

Speaking to reporters, Memon said the government had fulfilled its promise to the people of Karachi. “We have fulfilled the promise made to the public, and the double-decker bus service has begun in Karachi. In 2026, we will provide even better transport facilities to the people,” he said.

He added that on the instructions of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, double-decker buses would be rolled out on all major roads of the city in the new year.

Double-decker buses have a long history in Karachi. In the 1960s and 1970s, they were a defining feature of the city, operating on major routes such as Saddar, Bandar Road and MA Jinnah Road. Riding on the upper deck was especially popular among students and young people.

Rapid population growth, rising traffic pressure and maintenance issues eventually led to their disappearance. Minibuses and coaches replaced them, but public demand for their return never faded.

Karachi, home to an estimated 25 million people, continues to struggle with severe traffic congestion and an inadequate public transport network. Dilapidated roads, weak traffic management and a lack of civic discipline have compounded the problem.
