@Panzerkiel can u provide a brief review of Shireen Mazari's book on Kargil. I read it and felt it left alot to be desired.
Also can u suggest any other book on Kargil esp focusing on military/tactical aspects

I've read both books... Mazari and Zehra... And both of them don't come near even an iota of what actually happened.

As someone who even as a young teen was present fairly close to the “front line” and sat in drawing rooms with those commanding the front line. There is a lot less credit given to what was accomplished but also lot less accountability for what was left to run “uncontrolled” and especially the lack of communication.

However, while one can conveniently lay the blame on Musharraf and friends for this personal hoorah -it ignores two important things.

There was an opportunity cost on what Kargil operations was meant to achieve which a potential settlement of the Kashmir issue would lose to heavily favor India.

Then, you had to have the utter apathetic ignorant “seth” in NS as PM who while aware of the op and granting the ok never dug into the implications of it post his summit with Vajpayee. The man needed assistance to talk to the Kashmir issue with international leaders because his english was non existent but so was his overall understanding of the issue beyond the 8th class textbook.
