India - US Tariff and Relations | News + Updates

There have been many posters who have been declaring an imminent death of the Indian Economy. These posters reappear whenever there is any such news. Since the day these tariffs were declared the Indian economy hasn’t gone into a tailspin these posters were hoping for. Let’s see, if these celebrations on tariffs against India last for how long.

Trump has been saying that Modi is trying to please him. By increasing Russian oil seems to the most unique way to please him. He doesn’t seem to have got the memo that arm twisting India isn’t going to work.

@Yasser76

Strange, half the posters on this thread claimed a deal was imminent in November....

Yes, of course, we (I was one of the half you referred to) were wrong in doing so.

And yet as @Owaiz sb wisely observed that with a 50% duty we were doing better exports than a neighbouring country with 19% duty.

Regards

Saying that India is doing better export than countries with 19 % tarriff (look like you refer to Indonesia) seems not really right

But I see that some trade are still not getting tarriff and in this sector India has strong hold like with Apple investment, and since China get really the real blow from US when it comes to trade, then it is what makes India excel, but many components of electronics still imported from China/Taiwan, so we only can see it (tariff impact) through trade balance, not merely export value

India is asking refiners for weekly disclosures of Russian and US oil purchases, people familiar with the matter told Reuters last week, adding that they expect Russian crude imports to dip below 1 million barrels per day as New Delhi seeks to clinch a trade deal with Washington.

Modi has spoken to Trump at least three times over the phone since he imposed tariffs, but the discussions remain inconclusive.

India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal met US Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer to discuss bilateral trade and economic ties last month in Delhi.

Love it, Trump now in no mood to take any prisoners. I think he will make India go to zero on Russian fuel imports. Usual crowd on here will then paint it as a Modi "victory".....

Not at all, bro. Indonesians are our dear friends and brothers- I will never refer to them sarcastically.

"All he wanted to talk about was how they're buying less Russian oil"

Lindsey Graham, regarding his exchange with the Indian ambassador to the US.

Concessions have been made. But USA wants India to do more.

Indian exports to USA may yet be saved but not without slapping Putin.

More "balancing act" diplomacy please.

“Modi is a good guy. He knew I was not happy, and it was important to make me happy,”

Donald John Trump. 45th and 47th President of the United States of America.

Any more updates from Hindustani cousins on how the balancing act is working out?

Clearly, India and the US have significant differences on trade policy, but it is hilarious to see economically illiterate Patwaris and Faujeets gloating about India struggling with its balancing act.

The whole purpose of negotiating trade deals is to grow the economy and exports. India's economy is growing at over 8% and its exports are increasing , while Pakistan's are collapsing despite India's tariffs being at 50% and Pakistan's at 19%. These tariffs are not paid by Indian or Pakistani exporters, but by American importers. The fact that Pakistan cannot take advanatge of this huge difference in tariff rates is testimony to the sorry state of governance and lack of confidence of investors in the current regime.

Also, this junta has completely surrendered the interests of Pakistani farmers and local industry to American pressure. From the next fiscal year, heavily subsidised American farm product will be able to enter Pakistan without paying any customs duty. The main reason that India has not signed a deal with the US is that they are trying to protect their farmers, domestic industry and strategic autonomy in terms of who they buy oil from, whereas the junta in Pakistan surrendered on all these fronts without even the semblance of a fight.

What negotiation?

Did you bother to watch the footage of Trump and Lindsey Graham from AF1?

Scroll up and see for yourself before getting too hyped up by hubris.

The Indian ambassador was in private and BEGGING Graham to interlocute on behalf of India and ask Trump to relieve 25% of the tariffs.

Each to their own I suppose, but this is simple desperation.

Instead of spewing your usual effluent here, and since you seem so concerned with Delhi's objectives, why not direct your anger at the Indian government for failing repeatedly to demonstrate strength in front of Trump when opportunities have presented themselves? It is their weakness that Trump preys on repeatedly. Yet they think laying down and begging with clasped hands will impress him.

If India was content with the status quo, none of this begging to Lindsey Graham would ever have taken place and India would quietly be happy with the "win for their farmers".

Lindsay Graham is a known India hater who makes these statements to please Trump lmao. I remember time when Jaishankar used to talk down on this Graham guy. Also wasn't he the guy who pushed for Imran Trump meeting? Lol! Yeah very credible
