Russian engine was good for us initially, as it was proven and supplied in bulk. Now it seems like a liability....

The post probably did a poor job at explaining.
But I think this is debt swap. Basically, the JF-17 deal works as a debt-for-jets swap, done properly IFRS. Pakistan doesn’t repay the $2 billion Saudi loan in cash; instead, that loan is taken off the books and replaced with an obligation to deliver JF-17 aircraft and related support. As the jets are delivered, the value is recorded as defence exports. So there’s no big foreign-currency outflow. We'll pay for the production of the jets in ruppees so expect some inflation as we print more ruppees

Ok, but China is also a partner in the JF-17. will they agree on such a deal? here no actual money is coming in , instead existing loan on Pakistan not China is being paid off as JF-17

China is already selling to everyone... Pakistan would settle the loan and the Chinese would get their share...

Orders will go to China for components and systems that Pakistan does not manufacture and China will get a share of the profits. China will get more money from this deal than Pakistan will as the bulk of the expensive stuff still comes from China. That is baked into the contract for the JF17 project. Neither side can cut out the other side of shared profits.

Don't know, I'm purely speculating, but there's been reports on and off of some Chinese developed alternative powerplant for the JF17. I wonder if the PAF will go for one of these if it goes ahead with a potential Block 4 order or PFX JF17. It seems they have enough confidence in Chinese powerplants with the J10Cs.

There is the WS-13 and it's iteratives of A, E/IPE, X which was developed for the JF17 but no one has purchased those engines and I can't see any customer wanting to take a risk like that with those series of untested/not operationally deployed engine.

Pakistan is comfortable with the J10CE engine because that engine is soo common in the PLAAF and it has been pretty much debugged by now, that does not apply to the WS-13.
Pakistan did purchase a single WS-21 engine, though for what reason is not known yet.
I do think Pakistan will stick with the RD-93 engine unless something drastic happens. Do note, there is not much actual demand for new build RD-93s as most of Russia's procurement is geared towards Sukhoi origin jets. So, PAF and the JF17 fleet is basically keeping the RD-93 manufacturing line open right now, so they can meet any uptick in demand fairly easily.
