JF-17 - Updates, News & Discussion

From what I remember from the old PDF, PAC can produce 33% of the K-8 but you probably know better and that's not issue here. China has shown the next gen of K-8 in the past, wouldn't it be better to get those vs the older variant we have? Also, I know that this is off topic and I apologize for that but it just deosn't make sense to go for an old plane.

The K8-NG was never put into production. The deal for Sudan is either for 2nd hand K8 from Pakistan(unlikely), or China(refurbished?). I don't see how PAC can manufacture a new build K8 given that it only produced a small fraction of the airframe during its early induction.

Therefore, this part of the report makes no sense.

We don't pay much attention to news about the K-8NG. Therefore, we don't know much about it.

The internal competition among Chinese airlines is very fierce. If a company performs poorly, it will be downgraded and absorbed by another company.

Guiyang Aircraft Company was absorbed by Chengdu Aircraft Company.
Shaanxi Aircraft Company was absorbed by Xi'an Aircraft Company.

The Chinese partner company for the K-8 project is Hongdu Aircraft Company (formerly Nanchang Aircraft Company). This company has consistently performed poorly. Currently, they rely on the JL-10 and GJ-11 projects to avoid being absorbed by other giants. If they don't quickly shed their burdens and accelerate their development, they are very likely to be the next company to be acquired.
Therefore, I suspect that they have already abandoned the K-8 project, retaining only technical support and parts support, leaving everything else to Pakistan.

Even if some of the hype around the JF-17 purchase orders is not based on actual sales numbers, a global media buzz is good. I believe Pakistani military hardware are going to sell well going forward due to some kind of a 'Perfect Storm' like situation: The performance against India in the May 2025 conflict, the crash of India's Tejas in the Dubai Air Show, the much lower cost of JF-17, the No-strings attached nature of the sales, the effusive praise President Trump has indirectly given to the Pakistani jets, the Russians unable to supply hardware in timely manner, the recent upheavals in the Middle East, Pakistani's aggressive diplomatic moves since May 2025 ...
Some Pakistani analysts saying from $25 billion to $60+ billion worth of orders for Pakistan's military hardware coming up in 2026 alone.

Now that is a Category 5 Hurricane of the good kind. :D

Well, I'd take those figures with a shovelful of salt at present. Next 10 years, may be. 2026? Nope.

I wasn't talking about missile life but JF-17's performance in combat. It is a light fighter with less fuel and more weight will affect climb rate, range and agility etc. So the better configuration depends on the situation and requirement of mission.
J-10C can carry more than 4 PL-15 but we have seen standard A2A configuration with 4 PL-15 and 2 PL-10.

I have a question for you with your airforce background ….

Why do fighter jets need to carry more than let’s say 4 missiles ….. they are always flying in a formation with other planes also carrying many missiles….

How often in history has any plane fired more than a pair at its opponent ?

People talk about planes carrying 8-10 missiles on F 15 or Rafale but I have never known any incident where they fired more than May be 2 ( Saudi F15 did in the first gulf war).

So shouldn’t we focus more on the fuel plane is carrying to hang around longer at the theatre instead of loading more missile causing weight increase and more drag ?

no bro, we have 25/75% partnership in K-8 according to Chinese military aviation blogpost

Actually every news about Pakistan selling jets is misleading …. It’s more like Pakistan/ China selling these planes so credit needs to be given to China . A lot of JF17 subsystems and avionics/ engines are made in China … infact almost 50 percent of plane parts come from China .

I believe without China’s help and support none of these deals can close .
Diplomatic muscle , supply chain and support from China will be essential to complete these deals .

And the issue of plane engines ?
Is it WS13 or RD93??

What about avionics ? With Azerbaijanis going for Turkish weapons package suddenly customers have a huge option of customizing and picking the package they want ……

So overall interesting to see what customers will pick and how they configure their planes . I have a feeling Bangladesh might pick Turkish package as they already have very close tires with Turkey .

... I personally do not see any GCC Nation taking an interest in the JF-17 Thunder due to Political Pressures from the West. However, I see no reason why we can't loan them - short/long term.
I think this is what is changing. They US at least is handing over the security role to Pakistan for Western and Central Asia.
