There is nothing logical about them buying the Rafales.
First, the pace at which European programs work, there is no FCAS coming even in next 10 years that would be combat ready fully. So india doesn't really have a choice to counter J-35 unless it gets F-35s all of a sudden and USA allows end user permission to use against China/Pakistan.
The only reason they are doubling down on Rafales is because that is the only way they can salvage their own and French Rafales repute after many of them were shot down during May 7th. Not buying Rafales or not buying in large numbers would indicate to the world that they don't know what they are doing and their initial Rafale procurement was a flawed decision in light of rapidly changing combat in South Asia.
The cost they are paying is absolutely absurd and the meagre 30% (if true) localization of parts they are getting for it is outright stupid and of no value in the overall industrial landscape. They have been assembling fighters for almost half a century now.......Rafales will be just another one in that list.
Yes, they do benefit if France shares the complete source codes for all aircraft and engine systems and also decides that India gets to modify the aircraft structurally and avionics wise on its own terms....but again, is the cost of procurement and sustainment really worth it?
Doesn't matter you can afford it or not. Remember there are a lot more ways than one to utilize your money.
