Iranian Air Defence Systems | News and Discussions

That’s not it works. Air defense rings are an onion. Those systems you mentioned are inner layers of the onion, they cannot replace the outer layers.

Manpads aren’t shooting down F-35s or even F-16s. They don’t work. HZ and Hamas had manpads from Russia/China and never once managed to hit a single Israeli jet. Houthi’s had limited success against Arab pilots flying stock configurations.

Sure theoretically if a fighter jet is dive bombing like Russian jets did in Ukraine you could maybe hit one. But American jets have the world’s most advanced targeting pods and are dropping PGMs from 20KM+ away at high altitude. Manpads are borderline useless against modern well equipped fighter jets.

And SHORADs struggle as we saw Turkey and Israel both take apart Syria’s pantsirs in separate conflicts during the war. Most SHORADs have ranges less than 15KM. So enemy can just pick them off well before the operator knows what’s happening.

The only thing that makes sense about these manpads is to give them to IRGC speedboat crews to take down helicopters/drones in the Persian Gulf or give them to tactical crews to hit slow moving drones/helicopters near the borders and key missile sites.

I doubt Iran would be dumb enough to use them on stopping USAF jets.
I think they gave up on building AD rings to protect Iranian air space in the short term, that's a long term project

and since large systems are so vulnerable they are not worth the investment in small numbers, so max out smaller systems instead to destroy lower tier targets

Why Iran needs to purchase MANPADS from Russia or any other source by the time that it's indigenous produces such systems???

what a disaster, now we are buying Russian MANPADs

The article is talking about 2 or 3 years time frame. Like Su35 program and others (Mi28) those additions are just for a foreeseable future.
Also It is probably that most of production line of Misagh-3 are just for allies and this Verba would be for internal use (I am thinking about shia PMU in Irak and Yemen mostly).

A stinger missile goes for $50-80K https://www.thepricer.org/stinger-missile-cost/ per unit. Yet according to this tweet "Cash strapped" Iran is paying a Million Euros per manpad? I don't buy it. I don't doubt that Iran has bought Verba missiles for the Mi-28NEs for the anti drone role but I am very sceptical about the price mentioned above.

the price per Stinger missile alone is $120,000-$150,000

Verba is a newer platform. still, assume 2500 missiles @ $100k each = $250m

+ 500 launch units @ $500k each = $250m

= $500m total.

makes sense

Then Iran is cooked. Not sure what the hell it’s been doing for last 40 years that Air defense rings are considered a “long term project”.

Even Assad built better air defense network then Iran before the terrorist imposed civil war.

Doesn’t explain why you don’t build more Khordad systems or tabas or even Mehran which has its own radar/IO and dual canister launch systems.

These are all scoot and shoot systems with low footprints vs S-300 and Bavar

maybe they realised large systems are too vulnerable to internal agents so the best hope is MANPADs and mobile SHORAD systems
Perhaps they're going to be used on the frontier or even in Iran's frontier by embedded special forces

No checks and balances in the country..... For how many years did the leadership pocket the money on indigenous products... While lying to the supreme leader or other organizations? If we had an independent body inspecting and verifying and then reporting to a budgetary committee.... They would have known the leader of that said branch is a corrupt SOB.

these systems take years to build, especially when core facilities for producing these systems have been damaged in the war

without nuke , even Russians can hope to stand their ground against USA air power

ADs are the first target, based on 12 days of war it was useless

No - the problem was a) element of suprise b) local drones c) incorrect setup and layout of an IADS d) no airforce ...

There are lessons for Iran to both learn and fix.
