Iran - Israel/US War: Israel-US declare war on Iran, Iran responds

Hello from the FT newsroom, where we are busy covering the sixth day of the US and Israel’s war on Iran.

Missiles and drones are streaking across the Middle East, a vital energy highway is in paralysis and hundreds — including Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and six US soldiers — are confirmed dead. And yet, it remains unclear exactly why US President Donald Trump decided to launch this war — and therefore what might bring it to an end.

Current and former Israeli officials tell the FT that Israel is preparing for a multi-week military onslaught alongside the US to fully “dismantle” key pillars of Iran’s theocratic state. But as our US national editor Edward Luce writes, “anyone who claims to know where this conflict will go, including Trump, is bluffing”.

All of the neighbours are the ones enabling attacks on Iran, aren't they ? They cannot keep bullying Iran just on account of being neighbours.

I think Iran gave them a lot of leeway for a long time but just attacking Israel alone is not getting Iran anything anymore, unless those neighbours stop supporting israel.

there was a post in previous pages, ME countries had offered complete closure of oil refineries for 2 months

that would be a disaster for the global economy, if these oil refineries stop

ordinary people wont survive that shock

as far as i can remember, Pak. could not survive a month of oil subsidy in March 2022 and nearly went bankrupt

USA has planned for a month long campaign, I sincerely hope it finishes before that

Wasting precious missiles. Should focus on Israel only
Again, as I have said previously, intervening countries are INTERCEPTING those missiles aimed at Israel.

Folks on the forum seem to misunderstand what neutrality entails.

Those intervening countries have an option to be genuinely neutral - either allow overflight of assets of BOTH belligerent nations, or of NEITHER.

If Israel is permitted overflight but Iran is shot down, then a side has been taken during active hostilities. Iran simply has no choice but to engage intervening nations that shoot down its missiles while allowing Israel safe overflight.

Iran obviously feels that what it is, and has been, doing is "fully valid", and it is its sovereign right to do as it decides.

Other countries, of course, will respond, as suits them, as we can see.
And thats how we all are sleepwalking into a regional catastrophic war. We in Pakistan are also "locked in room with a powder-keg".

I don't disagree. But there is a relative limit at which any country can engage in warfare. It'd serve Iran better to utilise their limited missile and drone stock at Israel, and imperial bases in GCC and Jordan.

If the rumors of the interceptors running low is true, then why launch this war on Iran now, rather than build up the stock and launch later, say, one year later. I think the conflict has started now partly because of the weather--like in the Iraq War 2003-- but also because Netanyahu knows he has about 3 more years of his man in the White House to help with not only this war but more to come.
And as long as Netanyahu and Trump are both in office, there are going to be more wars and territory grab in the Middle East. So we have about three more years of horror in front of us!
Fair assessment.

I also think, the more I listen to Hegseth's psychotic ramblings and now even Lindsey Graham stating "religious war", that Ramadan was deliberately chosen as a start window.

Some of them on Capitol Hill genuinely believe their own hubris.

Because they think in 2 weeks regime will be changed and Iran will be defeated. They call such things miscalculation.

I just hope Russia starts a big offensive on Ukraine.

If they really thought Iran could be 'defeated' in 2 weeks then I have serious doubts they are good planners. I think there are greater plans than Iran. While easy to guess grabbing south Lebanon and further degrading the Houthis, more plans are in place and for that the time is needed as long as Trump is in office and thus the apparent rush to attack Iran.

A Kurdistan, tackling of Turkey; actions on Pakistan via Afghanistan, even possibly via India; cementing the American/Israeli hold on Middle Eastern nations; controlling oil; restricting China's energy options...

While the war on Iran is Netanyahu's personal wish, there are larger American plans too. The current US administration has some maniacs like Rubio who publicly wished for neo-colonialism, Stephen Miller for giving primacy to 'force' in international relations, Mike Huckabee representing the Messianic crazies in US politics and population, and a 'I couldn't care less' President.

It is not merely a function of what countries deem to be valid or in their interests or otherwise.

Neutrality during conflict is defined well enough. If nations are not adhering to neutrality, then it is quite simply foolish and amateurish of them to ask why missiles are landing on them.

Zios weapons manufacturing in India is a Trojan Horse for neighboring countries

Maybe they just happen to be incompetent this time? People can have their "days"... where they screwed up just for being unusually careless/incompetent.
But US losing fighter jets daily or frequently only means the end date for US involvement in military clashes against iran is already on the wall/in view.
