For a Muslim leader that loved to preach "اشداء علی الکفار، رحماء بینهم", he really did the opposite of that.Another factor was the riots of January 2026 hadn’t occurred or the June war of 2025.
Khamenai’s dovish behavior cost the nation very dearly.
The problem wasn't the late Khamenei alone though. The entire system felt comfortable with the status quo at that time. People were suffering, Israel was getting more and more aggressive, but the leaders of Iran felt safe from it because they were filling their pockets by evading sanctions and thought an all-out war would be improbable.
The damage that Khamenei's "strategic patience" has done to Iran will not be repaired in a long time. First and foremost, our nuclear program has been set back by years in a time that we have never needed nuclear deterrence more for survival. Secondly, it will take years for our economy to recover from this while our bad economy has been the cause of several uprisings in the last 10 years.
Once this war is over, we need to rethink a lot of things and change course in many ways. If it doesn't happen and we choose to ignore the problem like we did in the 12-day war, even darker days will be ahead.
