WAPDA Hydel Generation Surpasses 6000 MW

May 18, 2026: With increased indent by Indus River System Authority (IRSA) from the water reservoirs, WAPDA hydel generation surpassed 6000 MW, as its Hydel Power Stations provided 6118 MW electricity to the National Grid during peak hours last night.

According to the details, Tarbela Hydel Power Station contributed 2332 MW, Tarbela 4th Extension 1095 MW, Ghazi Barotha 1160 MW, Mangla 930 MW, Warsak 135 MW, Chashma 101 MW; while remining 365 MW electricity was generated by WAPDA's other medium and small Hydel Power Stations.

It is important to note that WAPDA's hydel electricity is the most affordable clean and green energy in the National Grid and it subsidises the entire Energy Sector in Pakistan.

Any one aware of the timelines for the underconstruction Chashnup-5 (1100 watt) power plant?
I cant find any latest news around that

• Chinese workers, engineers to get enhanced security
• Force to guard dams, plants, project sites
• Bill sent to parliament for approval
• Move follows attacks on Dasu hydel workers

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to create a new “Wapda Security Force” to provide dedicated security to major water sector infrastructure projects across the country and associated workers, particularly those from China.

The force is being created through the Wapda Security Force Act, 2026, which has already been forwarded to parliament.

“The Wapda Security Force is being constituted to ensure the protection and security of critical infrastructure managed by the Water and Power Development Authority,” reads the statement of objects and reasons.

The decision to create a standalone force follows two terrorist attacks on engineers and workers of the over $6 billion Dasu Hydropower Project in November 2021 and March 2024, in which several Chinese and Pakistani workers were killed.

Initially, CPEC-related security was extended to the Dasu project.

Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) is preparing for the expansion of Phase III of Thar Block II of the Tharparkar area in Sindh, reinforcing the project’s role in reducing Pakistan’s reliance on imported fuel.

The development comes as SECMC and Engro Powergen Thar Limited (EPTL) marked seven years of successful commercial operations at Thar Block II on Thursday.

Established through a collaboration between the Government of Pakistan, the Government of Sindh, and local and international partners, the integrated mine-mouth project achieved its Commercial Operations Date (COD) on July 10, 2019.

Since then, the Thar Block II mine has expanded to a production capacity of 7.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and supplied more than 38 million tonnes of indigenous coal, enabling EPTL to generate over 27,000 GWh of electricity since inception.

“For over a decade, our purpose has been to strengthen Pakistan’s energy security by delivering affordable electricity while creating lasting opportunities for the people of Thar,” said Amir Iqbal, CEO of SECMC.

“As we prepare for our Phase III expansion, our commitment to inclusive development in Tharparkar remains as strong as ever,” he said, terming Thar coal as a ‘national asset’.
