A 6th gen can have anything it wants, because 6th gen (much like 5th gen) is just a marketing term, with no real set of agreed upon perimeters.

If the US thinks its okay, chances are they're okay, because much like China, they have smartass engineers designing these jets.

A lot of American posters here dismissed the J20 as being a "true stealth" because it had canards... So, just replaying that same concept by some of the American posters here back at them for their "6th Gen platform" that it seems to have canards.

The US mastered it in 1946 with the XB-35
Then fully fbw version with the B-2 in 1989
Then did the complete tailess high agility bit with seperate split surfaces in 1997.

You’re just too late with internet access in china to even have knowledge of when the US was done with proving these technologies in designs AND already moving on.

The US is using a pair of canards to compensate the stability of a supersonic tailless aircraft.

B-2/B-21 are tailless subsonic aircrafts, which is apple to orange to the supersonic 6th gen fighter.

I tell you what will be true 6th gen for me, a autonomous plane which can conduct its missions without a pilot, flying super sonic or better hyper sonic.

J-20 canards are barn doors.

AAW canards would be revolutionary. They’re essentially morphing wings with zero hinges, gaps, hydraulics etc. Essentially the holy grail for ELO RCS combined with extreme maneuverability.

Of course, I can’t tell you 100%, but it’s logical to conclude after seeing the F-47 artwork and Boeing Phantom Works work on AAW going back 25 years to the X-53.

It makes logical sense that materials design has advanced to the point where Phantom Works could incorporate this tech.

F-22's caret intakes are more barn doors than J-20's canards.

J-20's canards are executed no worse than F-22's horizontal stabilisers. Only difference is the F-22's horizontal stabilisers are hidden from more angles whereas the J-20's canards are always visible from the front. Execution is the same but J-20's DSI intakes are worlds stealthier than F-22's caret intakes. Overall there's no reason why J-20's frontal RCS is that much worse than F-22's. Canards always present vs caret intakes. F-22's rear is also visible from plenty of frontal angles.

Anyway plenty of American and European 5th gen programs included canard layout. Canards does not prevent a fighter from being VLO. It is easy to just make it without canards but CAC and PLAAF clearly decided the performance requirement for J-20 necessitated canards.

They hint to it in the artwork as well. It’s logical to conclude AAW will be incorporated and speculating is what we do as defense enthusiasts.

It’s the technology required to achieve ELO on a tailless fighter yet maintain extreme maneuverability at the same time.
