Maybe because previous one was in UHF band, and this new one in L-band for BNET.

Here are some of the apparent visual changes
1. New vertical stabilizers, with RWRs shifted to the Wingtips
2./3./4. New antennas (part of the SDR)
5. Larger auxiliary intake

6. New Canopy with a wider field of View and most probably better aerodynamic performance

Good looking plane that should be the workhorse of the Indian Air Force.

I can’t help but compare and contrast the nearly 4 decades it took for this program to mature versus the incredible speed the Turks have developed their TFX KAAN & aviation systems. India has a long way to go but the lessons learned from the LCA program should help accelerate other aviation programs, if not, HAL should be broken apart and privatized.

There huge mismanagement from Tejas in all fronts from IAF not fully supporting it, to ADA inexperience in building 4th Gen, geopolitical issues which delayed the engine in late 90s and most important was frequent changes GSQR changes by IAF.
But what we have achieved is the development of entire aeronautics ecosystem in India with Tejas programme, which will eventually fasten up the Tejas MK2/AMCA delivery
