As Narendra Modi touched down in Seychelles over the weekend, the archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean swiftly bestowed one of its “highest” honours upon the Indian prime minister.

Modi beamed as he accepted the Guardian of the Blue Horizon award from Patrick Herminie, the Seychelles president, complete with a trophy and certificate.

Observers soon pointed out that several things appeared to be off about the award. The certificate misspelled “republic” as “repubblic”, and even “Seychelles” as “Seycheeles”. The award, it transpired, had only been created three days before Modi’s arrival and he was the first and only recipient.

To add to the furore, when run through software, the certificate was widely flagged as AI-generated.

The opposition Congress party were quick to jump on the controversy, claiming: “Give him [Modi] any award, and he’ll come running.”

“They were in such a tearing hurry that they even got the official name of the Republic of Seychelles wrong,” the Congress politician Supriya Shrinate said on social media.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) hit back, saying it was a “proud moment for India” for him to receive the award for his “green leadership”.

On Thursday, the Seychelles foreign ministry responded with a statement claiming that a “working draft” had accidentally been circulated and that an “authentic and duly approved” version had now been issued.

“The Guardian of the Blue Horizon distinction is genuine,” added the foreign ministry.

As critics have pointed out, Modi has shown a notable penchant for receiving awards, at home and abroad, over his 12 years in power.

Last month, days before Modi’s visit to Israel, the Israeli parliament quickly created what it claimed to be one of the country’s highest honours, the medal of the Knesset, which was bestowed on Modi when he landed. Again, he is the only recipient to date.

In 2019, Modi also became the first recipient of India’s Philip Kotler presidential award, given to the prime minister for his “outstanding leadership of the nation”. According to the government’s press release, the honour was to be bestowed annually to the leader of a nation. However, no other leader has since been given the award and its website lies dormant.

It is privately acknowledged that accolades and awards have become an expectation during Modi’s foreign trips. Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, the author of a biography of Modi, said the global push for prizes was symptomatic of the prime minister’s personality-driven politics.

“The intention behind collecting these awards – often bestowed in circumstances that raise eyebrows – is to convey to supporters and potential converts that Modi is being honoured across the world over because of his greatness and that India’s rising clout is because of Modi’s personality,” he said.

In the past year Modi has also become the first foreign head of state to receive Ethiopia’s Great Honour Nishan and the order of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago.

The BJP says the awards are a recognition of Modi’s international stature.

As I was saying 😂

We can't even think about places like China because the expenses are completely different for middle-class people," explains a medical visa applicant. Highlighting India’s proximity and significantly lower treatment costs, he notes that India remains the only realistic choice for affordable care, while expressing optimism that reopening travel channels will strengthen bilateral relations.

Relations between the current nationalist government in Dhaka and New Delhi have improved since the current Tarique Rahman team took over power from the Yunus administration.

Independent Bangladesh and India have generally enjoyed positive relations and despite the futile efforts of some extremists to stoke hatred and hostility between the two nations, physical, economic and geographical realities as well as the deep racial, cultural and civilisation bonds between the two nations dictate that we will have generally peaceful and cordial relations with each other.

Actions speak louder than words and the fact that hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshis want to visit India for various reasons testifies to the recognition that India has a lot to offer including good quality medical treatment.

Shillong, Jul 4: Representatives of trade bodies from Bangladesh and India met at Bholaganj to discuss measures for enhancing bilateral trade through the Majai Land Customs Station (LCS).

A meeting was held yesterday attended by members from the Bholagonj Chonapathar Amdanekarak Group in Bholagonj, Companigonj, Sylhet, Bangladesh, along with representatives from the United New Majai Exporters.

The Bangladesh delegation was represented by Md Shahab Uddin, President, Bosher Ahamed, Vice President, Md Najrul Islam, General Secretary amongst others. The Indian delegation from the United New Majai Exporters’ & Importers’ Association comprised of Challenge Rajee, President, John Paul Khongwir, Vice President, Oristar Syiemtwa, Treasurer, John Kenedy Basaiawmoit, Hamarbabiang Khongsni, Balajied Iawbor who are the executive members.

The key objectives were to explore ways to expand the range of commodities traded across the international border and strengthen the existing trade framework.

The trade bodies emphasised the need to strengthen cross-border trade by facilitating smoother movement of goods and improving coordination between traders from both countries.

While limestone has traditionally been the principal commodity traded through the route, both delegations expressed a strong desire to diversify trade that would create new business opportunities, generate employment, and contribute to the economic development of the border regions on both sides.

They discussed the possibility of expanding exports and imports to include coal, agricultural products, fresh fruits, and other commercially viable commodities.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of maintaining cordial relations between traders of India and Bangladesh and working collectively to address challenges affecting cross-border commerce.

Members agreed that regular interactions between the two associations would help identify opportunities for trade expansion and resolve issues through mutual cooperation.

The representatives reaffirmed their commitment to promoting stronger trade ties through the Majai Land Customs Station and expressed optimism that increased bilateral trade would benefit businesses, local communities, and the economies of both countries.

In addition to good relations between our two militaries, it is good to see good relations between our business communities.

In the article we can see these businessmen calling for more trade between the two states but that requires cordial political ties.

Tarique Zia is a Bangladeshi nationalist and he will be under pressure from a small but vocal (foreign-backed) minority in Bangladesh to be hostile to India as these India-haters want either a full on Bangladesh-India war et la Ukraine v Russia or a cold war e.g. India v Pakistan (but replicated for Bangladesh) and will be happy with nothing short of that. Unfortunately Bangladeshi nationalism and Bangladeshi nationalists are too strong and Bangladesh will increase relations with India in different spheres including politically, militarily and economically.

Bangladesh Wants To Strengthen Ties With India: PM Rahman's Top Adviser

Speaking on whether he will visit India after the incident at the airport, Zahed Ur Rahman said, "I will certainly go. I am making this very clear that if I receive a proper invitation, I will certainly go because I want to engage with India, logically and rationally."

Bangladesh Wants To Strengthen Ties With India: PM Rahman's Top Adviser

Speaking on whether he will visit India after the incident at the airport,

Zahed Ur Rahman has made it clear that Bangladesh wants to improve India ties
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman has articulated how the India-Bangladesh relationship will proceed in the future. And it reflects Rahman's inclination to improve ties with India while negotiating from a position of mutual respect and mutual interest.

The remarks come in the backdrop of the incident at the Indira Gandhi International Airport with Zahed Ur Rahman in New Delhi last month.

Zahed Ur Rahman was stopped for questioning by the authorities after his name was reportedly flagged during a routine security check, Bangladesh's state-run BSS news agency reported. Rahman decided to return home and not enter India. Zahed Ur Rahman says he is open to returning, provided he receives a 'proper invite'.

Speaking on whether he will visit India after the incident, Zahed Ur Rahman said, "I will certainly go. I am making this very clear that if I receive a proper invitation, I will certainly go because I want to engage with India, logically and rationally."

Last month, the senior Bangladeshi official was travelling to India on a government invitation. He reportedly had a regular Bangladeshi passport with a SAARC visa and was not carrying a diplomatic passport, which is the usual practice for such visits, according to Bangladeshi media reports.

To express its "deep disappointment", Dhaka had even summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Bangladesh, Pawan Badhe, over the incident.

Zahed Ur Rahman, who was travelling to India to attend the 28th Meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Indian Ocean Rim Association last month, was questioned by immigration authorities and kept waiting. That prompted him to skip the event and return to Bangladesh.

However, Rahman has made it clear that the current Bangladesh government wants to improve India-Bangladesh ties.

After Muhammad Yunus had taken charge as chief adviser of the interim government following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in 2024, the relationship between India and Bangladesh deteriorated sharply because of Yunus's statements. Zahed Ur Rahman said the Tarique Rahman government wants better ties with India.

"So, we want to engage with India from a position of mutual importance and mutual respect. Apart from business and trade, there are a lot of areas where we can improve ties. We have come down from the position we took earlier," Zahed Ur Rahman said.

"During the interim government the relationship went into a bad state. We want to keep that aside and engage with India. We want business and trade. Our exchanges can take place in many forms," Zahed Ur Rahman added.

The remarks indicate that Bangladesh is keen on improving cooperation and trade with India. Bangladesh shares most of its international boundary with India, and India has delivered on its promises of a "Neighbourhood First" policy.

During the Middle East war, India stepped in to avert a fuel crisis in the country by sending major consignments of diesel to Bangladesh, which was facing a critical fuel shortfall due to the war. New Delhi has been supplying diesel to Bangladesh under the 'India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline' initiative, which was operationalised in 2017.

While Tarique Rahman chose Malaysia and China for his first official visit abroad as prime minister and not India, analysts say not much should be read into it, even as issues like the announcement of the Teesta master plan and the Mongla Port redevelopment remain areas of concern.

1. The current nationlist government wants to improve ties with India following the controversial interim Yunus administration and now on a daily basis we are seeing this.

2. From the article:

1783440946561.png

1783441036131.png

3. Bangladesh generally does not seek hostility with anyone and seeks friendship with all. There are many Bangladeshis who have fond memories of our Indian friends and allies and their help in many difficult times and are appreciative of their support. If you read my posts on this thread I quote government ministers and now one of the most powerful men in Bangladesh with direct access to the prime minister. The current nationalist government clearly wants good relations with India including optimising regional trade.

4. It will be interesting to see if we will see the revival of Sampriti exercises soon. Sampriti is a joint Bangladeshi-Indian military exercise which has been going on since 2009.

Here is a picture from a while back of the head of the Bangladeshi military General Waker uz Zaman with an Indian commander.

@uksyl I think Indian PM formally invited him. So...

Not sure what you mean. I am assuming you mean for a future visit.

Anyway if you notice I am not posting comments from internet trolls who thrive on click-bait, inflammatory content, rabble rousing to generate income but I am posting comments from actual government officials who belong to a government who if they fail to deliver economically could be violently removed from power as happened in Bangladesh July 2024 or in Sri Lanka a few years ago. Economic progress, jobs are the priority for the average Bangladeshi. What caused the revolution in Bangladesh was the economic downturn, alongside rampant thuggery from Awami League cadres across the country (along with bribery and corruption). The BNP has to succeed economically, for that to happen there have to be cordial relations with India and the optimisation of regional trade.

To put it in simple terms.

1. BD govt is out if economy fails.
2. For economy to do well we need good relations with India.

Simple maths.
