( red diesel is v.vvvvvvv cheap, like a fraction of normal diesel and can only be used on farms).

All red diesel is is regular diesel before it goes through the additional refining necessary to transform it to ULSD. That all started back in the late 80s or early 90s here in the US. Farmers and the heavy engineering industry all complained that ULSD was unnecessary for equipment that did not normally travel by road.

So the EPA granted an exception and further added that diesel for off highway use had to be treated with a special red dye that, if OTR vehicles used it, would show up in their tanks. I am not certain if that still exists and everyone has to use ULSD now or not.

Maybe this is a similar situation in the UK?
