Unrest in AJK Update and Discussion

A crippling shutter-down and wheel-jam strike was observed in the state capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Friday on the call of a people’s action committee to protest against a police crackdown.

A Dawn.com correspondent reported that Muzaffarabad witnessed confrontations between police and some of the demonstrators in different neighbourhoods till late evening, involving stone pelting and fierce teargas shelling.

The strike call was given by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee for Friday after several of its leaders and activists were arrested by police in overnight raids in different parts of Muzaffarabad and Mirpur division.

Last month, the committee had announced that people from across the state were supposed to stage a long march towards Muzaffarabad on Saturday (May 11).

The public action committee has been leading a rights movement to protest ‘unjust’ taxes levied on electricity bills and observed a shutter-down strike for the same reason in August last year.

The movement demands that electricity should be provided to consumers in accordance with the production cost of hydel power in AJK.

In December last year, it had reached an understanding with an official reconciliation committee, following which a notification was also issued by the government on February 4.

However, in April the committee had announced the long march on May 11 in protest against the “non-fulfillment of the written commitments” by the government.

Dawn.com’s correspondent reported that all businesses, including banks, remained closed, and traffic and vendors were off the roads in three districts of Muzaffarabad division.

In many parts of the state capital, clashes broke out between police and demonstrators, triggered by stone pelting by the latter. In retaliation, police resorted to teargas shelling, affecting people in homes and mosques as well.

Demonstrations were held in different parts of the city, where people vowed to carry on the struggle for their rights.

Shaukat Nawaz Mir, the top leader of the movement in Muzaffarabad who escaped arrest on Thursday, also addressed many gatherings in the town.

But if thier "mutalbaat" are TLP tier stupid then, unfortunately I believe there's no way out of this situation

It's bad reporting, the production cost is minimal. I think they meant the cost in terms of upheaval.
wdym? I'll look around for proper demands
but yeah, I am not pro subsidy
pro royalty - yes as per constitution of Pak

Have you seen how many large dams have been built in Sind or the heartlands of Punjab? Now look the size of AJK and how many have been built there. Yes AJK has fast moving rivers near source but that doesn't excuse the complete lack of anything substantial downstream.

flour is expensive because gov under CT imported wheat (4,700 pkr, domestic 3000pkr) but we had more than enough of our own
now everyone has to chip in for that bad decision

electricity I have to see thier serious demands but if production cost is what they are demanding than A- pay for the dam in full, build the dam, sell it to rest of us
after summer season import oil and coal, build thermal plants, make energy, pay for the nuclear plant based energy

only then can I take such demands seriously

When had army guaranteed the integrity of Pakistan? If that was the case then 1971 would never have happened.
Bangladesh was bound to happen army hastened it.

Also this is different situation, lot of unrest in KP, FATF and now Kashmir. Not right time for revolution.

But members are saying that its the electricity price which is the issue.
Whats the E-rate per unit in Punjab vs GB vs Kashmir and KPK.
15 vs 64
5 Rs per unit + 10 Rs tax

Have you seen how many dams have been built in Sind or the heartlands of Punjab? Precious little. Now look the size of AJK and how many have been built there. Yes AJK has fast moving rivers near source but that doesn't excuse the complete lack of anything downstream.
Dams for electricity can only be build in hilly, mountain regions
But money for that dam and its upkeep comes from everyone else

Just like AJK can't produce electricity after summer season and needs coal from Sindh, Nuclear energy of Punjab and Karachi, oil & gas imports from Gulf for electricity

That's how the grid system works where we are all relying on eachother although its not the most of efficient use of systems because 90s onwards govs made one bad decision after another resulting in electricity prices crushing the middle class especially the urban ones where rates of electricity theft is nearly nonexistent
