Yunus seeks Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to become ASEAN member

that’s silly.
makes no sense at all.
Asean will become a mess.
Well, Many people in Canada believe that Canada should be a part of EU.... except..... well.... a little pond called Atlantic and a continent gets in the way.

If Myanmar can match the description, then why Bangladesh so different?
Western parts of Myanmar was historically controlled by Bengali kings.
Arguably Indian 7 NE states and Bengal, historically have had strong cultural and economic cooperation with SEA and South China.

Mahayana Buddhism had its traditional stronghold in NE subcontinent and spread to forexample Indonesia.

Its no secret why ASEAN is reluctant to accede Bangladesh into ASEAN. The economic considerations are understandable . ASEAN would be far more positive, to put it mildly, if BD already had a several Trillion dollar economy and correspondent large internal market.

It's mainly because of cultural ties. SEA countries are somewhat similar in culture, food, religion and even the way they look. BD is solidly a south asian desi country. They want to associate with culturally similar countries. Sort of like how the EU is the union of white Christians.

Who remembers the BCIM economic corridor?

The Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar Economic Corridor (BCIM) was a proposed corridor connecting India and China through Myanmar and Bangladesh as a corridor.

Integrating into Asean could provide Bangladesh with access to technology transfer, partnerships, and expertise that could accelerate its progress in innovation.Asean membership would also integrate Bangladesh into regional supply chains.Bangladesh could similarly benefit by attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) and embedding itself in these networks.
Moreover, Asean's trade agreements, including the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), would allow Bangladesh to diversify its export markets, reducing its reliance on traditional partners in Europe and North America.

Yeah, why not add Mars and Alpha Centuri in the mix too! May be BD can move itself in south China sea and leave this wretched neighbour behind!
Hey, BD wants to join ASEAN, not me saying first. Why are you Indian so upset if your neighboring countries want to join other neighboring associations, it's up to these countries and the clubs to decide.

It's stalled now becus of India against BRI and Myanmar current situation.

Bangladesh, as an Islamic country, has a culture closer to Southeast Asia than to South Asia.

Let Bangladesh go to South East Asia, then let Vietnam and Singapore go to East Asia, and let Pakistan go to Central Asia.

jep, definately the ethno-cultural features and somewhat similar language family.

I'm from SEA but I don't want Bangladesh in ASEAN as the geographical location doesn't match.

Socially speaking, ASEAN has always been a mess. I mean, we've got Theravada and Mahayana Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, atheists, and even South Asian cultural influences, especially in Myanmar. And let's be real, geopolitics has never been ASEAN's main focus. SEATO was all about containing communism, but people often forget that ASEAN had similar motivations in its early days, though not as intense. Still, Vietnam was brought into ASEAN after our reforms, so the same could happen with Bangladesh. The real question is whether Myanmar will agree to accept Bangladesh into the bloc or not. Let's wait and see.

The Bloc’s History

Formed in 1967, ASEAN united Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, who sought to create a common front against the spread of communism. In 1976, the members signed the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, which emphasizes mutual respect and noninterference in other countries’ affairs.

South East Asia has indeed gets South Asian connection. Malaysian and Singaporean for example have tons of Indian ethnic and we can see clearly even in their mall, street

For Indonesia, in some part of Sumatra the South Asian DNA can also be seen.

Jakarta has so little Indian ethnic, but they still there

Exactly why BD should not be allowed to join ASEAN. They got Burma already. You do not want cats and dogs in the same bunch.

Are you making a case for NE subcontinent to join ASEAN or for Bangladesh to join ASEAN

geography matters. the same reason why Canada can’t join EU. BD can join TPP, instead.
