Syrian Civil War and The future of Syria after liberation

Assad planned to ‘abandon the government’

CNN
For now, it is not even entirely clear what form the next government will take.

After the capture of Damascus, the rebels instructed Assad’s Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali to continue his duties alongside his cabinet until a transitional team is assigned.

But Jalali had few answers on the future of the city’s governance when he spoke to Sky News Arabia.

His colleagues seemed equally unsure.

“We spoke to the prime minister and the direction was that work should continue, we are adamant that normal life returns … we have heard that a transitional government will be formed but we don’t know when,” the Assad government’s Minister of Industry Mohammad Samer al-Khalil told CNN in a phone interview.

The vacuum facing the rebels could even be seen as a parting gift from Assad.

Assad, who has not issued any public statements since the rebel advance began two weeks ago, appeared to have planned to “abandon his government, his people and his country and leave it in chaos” if the situation deteriorated, his prime minister said. “Perhaps to send a message to the people that ‘it is either me, or chaos’.”

Jalali said he had spoken to Assad hours before the president fled to Moscow, to express concern about the rebels’ movements, but the president was indifferent.

“When I told him the situation is critical, people are fleeing Homs toward the coast and the armed forces have collapsed… his response was ‘we’ll attend to it tomorrow,’” the prime minister said. “I was surprised.”

This is reminiscent of Mubarak's overthrow in Egypt, which was a very predictable coup d'etat in disguise where the army allowed the government to be overthrown so that it would take over thereafter. In Syria, the SAA withdrew in a coordinated fashion and allowed a handful of mujahideen on motorcycles to take over. I suspect that the SAA leadership was involved all along, as there seems to be a predefined arrangement between the mujahideen , the government and the SAA for the day after Assad's overthrow. Let's see how this plays out.

I doubt it, regime was rotten to the core, their only organisational goal was to keep population unspoken and reign of family assad for some social tokens, no cohesion at all, rebels inherited carcass of the state and frankly if the turks, gulfies does not step in immediately with money and material support they will collapse sooner or later, they need umbrella ASAP.

Giving the names of Turkish provinces along the border, Erdoğan said: "If one half of our heart is Gaziantep, Hatay and Şanlıurfa, the other half is (the Syrian cities of) Afrin, Aleppo, Hama, Homs, and Damascus."

Türkiye's sensitivity on Syria was never driven by self-interest, said the Turkish president, adding that Ankara always viewed the issue through "the lens of conscience."

The Turkish nation will forever carry their embrace of oppressed Syrians facing dark days as a "badge of honor," Erdoğan said, seemingly referring to the millions of Syrians who came to Türkiye during the war, many of whom are now flocking back to Syria.

Ankara has no designs on the territory of any other country, Erdoğan reiterated, underlining that the sole purpose of its anti-terrorist cross-border operations is to protect Türkiye.

"As of yesterday, a dark era has ended in Syria, bright days have begun," he said.

He also vowed Türkiye will not tolerate the emergence of new sources of terrorism beyond its borders.

With its "peaceful, active" policies that change the course of world affairs, Türkiye shapes history, and rewrites both its own and human history, said Erdoğan.

Stop your senseless troll posts that might fool non-Arabs unfamiliar with Syria and the Al-Assad regime.
I'm not trolling and my posts are not senseless.

The useless and incompetent Al-Assad regime that you are shamelessly cheerleading for, were the ones that lost territory to Israel (Golan Heights) during their 1967 failures and the same Al-Assad regime that did nothing to regain it.
When Sadat had a deal with the Israelis to get the Sinai back and recognize Israel, you guys didn't like it. You kept calling the Egyptians traitors. You still call them traitors and slaves to this day.

You,what has your super-rich and powerful country done to stop Israel from annihilating Gaza or stealing more than half of the West Bank? What has YOUR country done to help Syria get the Golan Heights back? Where was Saudi Arabia the last year when children were being starved to death in Gaza?

Yes, you are doing nothing else than trolling.

Who are "we guys"? KSA was the first country to accept Egypt back into the Arab fold when everyone else wanted to isolate them further, in particular the Arab republics. The biggest Arab supporter of Egypt as well since forever. What are you even blabbering about? KSA and Egypt are neighbors that share ancient history, ethnicity, culture, language, religion, dialects (basically almost everything), are indispensable partners (people to people). We host more Egyptians than any other country in the world. Millions of Egyptians and Saudi Arabians have recent ancestral ties to both countries, me included. As a non-Arab Greek (troll at that too) you are clueless and it is a waste of time for me to explain further.

The same thing as rest of the world - too little, albeit KSA has been the biggest humanitarian donor to Palestine, host one of the largest Palestinian communities that unlike in most other Arab countries have full rights as citizens and don't live in refugee camps as they did in much of your beloved Al-Assad regime. Nor have we ever been murdering Palestinians as your Al-Assad regime as well.

wlakin weyn kanat as-s3udiyah for a whole year? All talk and humanitarian aid while showering the Yahood with gifts and praises? You dare talk about Syrians then? Sitting in your rich palaces and destabilizing countries all over the Middle-East? Haraaam! Haraaam! You have F-15s,Eurofighters,Abrams,M60s,Bradley and a whole fleet and you wouldn't even dare tell Israel "Enough is enough!"
How many times do you need to be told that it was the useless Al-Assad regime that lost the Golan Heights, murdered Palestinians within Syria, accepted Israeli attacks for 20 + years and in general was absolutely useless? Don't blame other Arabs that have and had nothing to do with it.

KSA was the one that gathered the entire Arab and Muslim world and has been lobbying the world powers to end the Israeli occupation. The same KSA that refuses to sign the Abraham Accords and normalize with Israel as most Arab and Muslim countries in the region have done.

What gifts or praises? Unlike your Greece, that is in love with Zionists since forever, KSA has yet to recognize Israel, import a single Israeli product or have any relations at all. Even though KSA (from a cold and calculated position) would gain 1 billion more things if they did than the current status quo. But out of principle, it has not happened for 78 years.

So spare me your ignorant nonsense and keep crying about Syrians throwing the Al-Assad regime in the dustbin of history where it belongs! Not going to waste my time any longer with a ignorant Greek troll that has no business in Syria or any other Arab affairs

Turkey has longed to occupy northern Syria and Iraq for many years.

Mind my french but Erdogan is a fckin clown. He's a hypocrite who plays on both sides and is like a cockroach who would stay alive in every situation.

Alas! Turks are with everyone and no one. As usual

You miss the substantive point , repeatedly , so before writing you off as a waste of time....

In this week....... the USA has further consolidated the middle east, say what you want but that's not in China's interest

The Bri is diminished with Syria falling

Russia is weaker losing it's me presence, therefore the sco is less attractive, there is now only one super power in the region

And so is BRICS weaker

Why would you think about another global system when the existing one has out maneuvered the pretenders, Saudi will stick with petrodollar,India will have a reason to distance itself to the extent it wants to, other nations will all reconsider

The reality is china is clearly trying for global influence and leadership ..
Bri, Sco, brics

So I don't know how it makes sense to remain passive... boastful yet timid? only soft diplomacy?

It seems like they have not learnt this game, I think at this trajectory Iran and Russia might decide enough sacrifice and effectively allow USA to divert to china, and offer any required concessions

Ok then china will have to directly confront, everyone else around them is spent and war tired
A proper analysis would be lengthy. An abbreviated version may be this: countries generally don't make policy based on abstract notions but on how it may benefit them and their people. China is focused on improving the lot of their people for foreseeable future. When that is complete (to their satisfaction), they may pursue other interests. U.S. was very insular for most of our 250-year history. In fact, our first president George Washington warned a new nation against getting tangled in old world fights (mostly British - French - Spanish rivalries then). U.S. got sucked into international intrigue only after 1940's due to WW2 and Cold War later. Most Americans are sick and tired of it and want to withdraw from it. What you are seeing now is the momentum of last 80 years continuing. That is why we elected a simpleton like Trump twice. His policy preference is ignore the world. How successful he will be is to be seen.

Why is everything sectarian related with you bro? Don’t you get that your enemies are laughing all the way to the bank?
Do you see Protestant and catholics at each others throats? You get good and bad everywhere - be it Islam Christian Sunni and Shia?
On topic - tonight you celebrate the fact that Israel has conquered Syrian land - marvellous for the region……
I would answer this but my efforts would be just a waste of time.
