It’s because the design, build and test process is more digitized. J-20A was a test subject for rapidly printed sections and now it’s being scaled to where not only did a digital twin of the J-36 “flew” in every possible scenario before the real one even finished building.
Which is why when Chinese members make trolling comments on F-47 and NgAD they totally ignore the idea that Lockheed Martin some 12 years ago created an entire simulated environment with hyper accurate physics/ model in every sense (fluid, electromagnetic, systems etc) that a NGAD first flew there - including all possible VLO testing and weapons tests. Then one was rapidly prototyped and flown - data simply verified and then sent to Pentagon who kept evaluating and refining requirements.
China was not too far behind in this same approach which is why a J-36A(which may not even be a designation) will fly MUCH faster than the J-20A ever did and so on.
Infact there is already enough growth built into it like the B-21 so that there may not even be a A or B model. It will be like Nio electric cars battery swaps to change/upgrade J-36 or XDS.
This is the future - where you are no longer stuck with one model to then adapt but rather can scale to build sub models and variants - even print specific warhead types right on the base as needed using designs your AI comes up with in minutes for the mission profile.
