Yes.
The PLA's housekeeping regulations have very strict regulations.
When female soldiers are in uniform, they usually do not wear makeup or wear light makeup. Heavy makeup is usually not allowed. (Exceptions are required for stage performances)
When soldiers are in uniform, body language and behavioral habits are strictly restricted.

the army of North Vietnam was 1/100 of US military power. on paper the possibility to win is almost 0. the only strategy is to inflict unsustainable costs to the US army.
in the operation line packer 2 the US fielded over 1,000 fighters jet, over 200 B52 bombers, numerous aerial tanker aircraft, 6 aircraft carriers. the largest ever assembled air power in a war.
the losses in the campaign in aircraft and personel was unspeakable. when the US economy, the dollar risk the collapse, the US gov realised the war is lost.

Are these troops mostly from the North, or were they handpicked from the South just for this event? I've always heard that people from Southern China are usually shorter than Northerners, but not really sure what the average height in the South is.

There were two northerners and two southerners in my university dormitory, and the two from the south were about ten centimeters shorter. But with the movement of people and intermarriage, the gap is narrowing.
