Well I have been using Apple Pay from my phone since 2016 I think and from my Apple Watch since 2020.

It works as it should however the worst country to make use of these technologies is USA. I take so many things for granted and I had to struggle a lot while making these simple payments in New York compared to other parts of the world.

The best country making use of the payment systems is probably UK followed by Switzerland and Dubai.

What issues did you have in using it in USA?

First of all, the omni technology introduced in the New York public transport seems to be from my Grandma’s age. It was introduced very late as similar technology exists in London for 15 years, just better.

In London we have a simple Oyster card or Apple Pay for transportation. It just works seamlessly.

But in NY, There is no guarantee Apple Pay will work in 1 train and not the next one, I would often take a bus and they want me to buy a ticket instead of paying from Apple Pay so the most convenient way to travel was to buy a day pass which works in most of the transportation. It was alright to travel with Apple Pay in Manhattan but as soon as you travel outside the borough I.e Queens, imagine the service is dead.

Then so many shops would say that if we pay by cash it’s 10usd but if I pay from Apple Pay it’s 12usd including tax

NYC transportation is a mess, no doubt. That is the fault of chronic underinvestment, and not the problem with Apply Pay, which works perfectly well elsewhere, in retail sales, for example.

I think the reason is America is 9.6 million square kilometre if my memory is correct. It means when they introduce a new technology, it takes a long time to spread everywhere compared to UK which is probably 30 times smaller. The same applies for Dubai and Switzerland that are even smaller countries.

Having said that, The Manhattan borough of New York is ahead of everyone else in the world but the other boroughs are a mess.

The geographical expanse is only one factor. The consumers have their own preferences among a plethora of products that serve their needs, whatever they might be. So the competition to create a viable product is pretty tough. The West Coast generally tends to be quicker to adopt newer technologies, much more than the East Coast, while the Great Middle is usually a few decades behind, at least.

I agree. There is a massive digital payments infrastructure gap in the US. I've experienced the challenges there as well. Tons of restaurants and bars even in New York don't have tap to pay enabled devices. Even Canada is significantly ahead where even small stores/bodegas and food carts have tap to pay (the technology leveraged by Apply and Samsung Pay). I love Apple Pay and use it in Canada everywhere!

@Mr X , I know you might not have experienced this but India is decades ahead of US, Canada, UK in payments space.

Everyone pays by QR code, the technology behind it (UPI) is government backed and the apps used to pay are private companies in competition with each other (including Google who has a popular app in this space). A large number of people have completely stopped carrying any kind of cash whatsoever. Even the poor 'redi wallah' / grocery carts, shoe shiners, pan walahs accept digital payments.

No Pakistan... I am rubbing my eyes. India is not on the list?
The tap to pay/credit card market in India is miniscule. India is skipping paying by cards directly to paying by QR codes. Everybody pays with QR codes, not tap to pay which requires a credit or debit card.

Thank gods we got UPI. Russia is learning the hard way. Build your own stuff, people.

Yes, but they have credit card readers in the back. It's not like you had to pay cash.
