To put it simply. After the French surrender, Vichy France and Japan signed a treaty allowing Japan to station troops in Vietnam. French colonial rule in Vietnam lasted until March 1945. Then the Japanese arrested all French colonial government officials and troops in Vietnam. This is one of the reasons why France believed it had the right to rule Vietnam again after its victory in World War II.
