What it has enabled with high performance flight hours is priceless (so to speak). From the carefully rationed F-16 hours to literally being able to “rajj ke urao” is a BIG driver in getting better training and tactics developed from it.

Pity those poor Engg Officers at Flt Lines who have to get the aircrafts ready for flying, recover them, maintain them and get them ready for flying again. All with rather poorly compiled Technical Manuals being improved over time - compared to the masterworks given by the Americans in addition to decades of manpower's practical experience on Vipers.

Some baggage cannot be removed that easily. You are looking at decades of knowledge in LM versus Chengdu’s F-7 jump to this and then usual “minimal effort” mentality on Pakistan side.

Just not held to a standard - which btw a now “ghar band” F-16 mafia could have enforced in PAF because they carry some of that mentality.

Absolutely and conversally, more PAF guys put in various scenarios, load-out configurations, and electronic environment etc. more they came up with new use cases in each role plus identifying any potential room for upgrades. (Hence contirbuting towards development of PFX).

What an incredible journey, right from the start.

I remember, following the news of its first flight on various defense forums and the constant whining of our neighbors on how this is just a mig-21 clone and it will never go in production because Russia will never release RD-93 for it. How time flies !!!!!

Me too!! I was earlier trying to find a fan made promo video of the FC1 test flights that had the "The Rasmus" as the background music, but youtube is playing slow on that right now.

There was another video which I vividly remember, the animation of JF-17s. Where SU-30s attack a Pakistani airbase. The F-16s on CAP try to intercept but they lacked BVR so they just evade. Then JF-17 comes out of the hangar and takes off and enages SU-30s. There was an exchange of BVR missiles. In the end many SU-30s were shot down, the last one fires an air to ground missiles towards control tower. A F-7 sacrifices itself coming in between the missile and the tower. The video was made by the member named Londo Molari.

Imagine when the WS-19 engine tech matures and the JF-17 has a better TWR than the F-16.

It would make it more agile and speedy for sure. But the airframe limitations will still make it a light attack jet. But it will pack a great punch like it's always has.

There is a Fizaya housing society I passed by Yesterday, they used to have an F-7 parked as a souvenir. It's been replaced by a JF-17, with 4 BVR loadout, under each wing 1 SD-10 and 1 PL-15 with wingtips showing PL-9. It's serial said 25-204 I think. It surprised me and then I realized it was just a mocked model. Next time I pass by there, I'll take a pic and post here. The serial shocked me from distance but later I realized it was a full scale model.

As the earliest JF-17 airframes move beyond their useful life, replacement with the PFX, powered by an export approved derivative or licensed production of the WS-19 could really fill a role of not only manned but an adequately sized unmanned platform. With a more powerful engine, that allows the jet to super-cruise, and possibly have generally better fuel economy, a dispersal plan could also not need to account as as much fuel to be on hand to refuel jets, in the fuel consuming task of multiple takeoffs a day.

I’ll give you the design now; it’s the McDonnell Douglas JAST design. A fully worked out design. Sure it has to be scaled down for the smaller diameter and length engine, but it’s a very modern design; it even has a “Pelikan tail”.

IMHO, it’s not about having a design as much as waiting on the engine to mature and our own facilities to catch up in production capabilities and financing. If we work on fully training our engineers to learn how to do all the work as independently as possible, have the facilities to make the planes and finally have the financing to fund a run of over a 100 planes, this jet could be ready in a decade and replacing older JF-17 by 2035-2040.



This model is on display at the western museum of flight in Torrance, CA, on the wall, next to the YF-23 model.
