This wouldn't have been an issue if IR didn't pursue anti-nationalism. It's fine amd probably smart to blend religion and nationalism, like Poland who symbolically made Jesus their king in 2016. However, IR pursued strictly anti-nationalist policies, something that literally no other country does. Morphine and thebaine are derived from opium and used to synthesize semi-synthetic opioids like hydro/oxy-codone. I don't necessarily agree with domestic production as you could just import the final product from China.

Synthetic opioids have largely replaced the need for natural opium in pharmachemistry. We don't need large scale production of opium for pharmaceutical industry. We already have an abundance of illegal opium from Afghanistan.

Right but the article seems to be describing a decrease in supply from Afghanistan due to Taliban anti-opium harvesting policies. Which may or may not be true, I don't know.
