In case of nuclear weapons, you have to evaluate costs to benefits. Its not a matter of survival at all. If you want to make Iran the nuclear umbrella of Mecca, Medina and other holy sites, i would suggest Pakistan is there already. The only threat to holy sites is Israel and Pakistan's nuclear pact with KSA ensures safety of Islamic holy lands. In that case we don't need Iran to take the lead.
