Chinese Aircraft Carriers - Liaoning, Shandong, Fujian and the future

from:晏之敖

You might not know this, but BW, the only manufacturer of steam catapults in the United States, went bankrupt and was liquidated in 2020.

Currently, the only factories in the world that can still produce steam catapult equipment are located in Eastern China.

PS:

Babcock & Wilcox (BW), the American company primarily manufacturing boilers and pressure vessels, still exists. Its military production division was spun off separately due to unprofitability and subsequently went bankrupt. The company still has a Beijing branch, which manufactures boilers and is doing quite well.

PSS:

Babcock & Wilcox (Beijing) Co., Ltd. ("Beijing B&W Company") was established in 1986 as a Sino-US joint venture. It became a state-owned enterprise in March 2018 after repurchasing the US shares.

PSSS:

Of course, the company that can manufacture steam catapults isn't this one.

Reportedly, the only enterprise in the world currently capable of manufacturing steam catapult devices is my former employer, Dongfang Electric, specifically its subsidiary Dongfang Boiler Works.

This indicates that they only produced one or two units experimentally. The technical team has certainly been disbanded by now, but the blueprints definitely still exist. Most crucially, the key team members are still at the factory.

Based on my understanding of industrial production, if there was a real need to resume production, with some funding and everyone working overtime, it could probably be done. The real problem arises if they originally used a specific grade of steel or a certain subsystem produced by other companies, and that no longer exist. In that case, restarting production would be much more difficult.

by 2030 I would expect

CV-16 with 36 x J15
CV-17 with 36 x J15
CV-18 mix of J35+ J15T + KJ-600 AWACS total 48 aircraft

120 fighter jets over enemy territory

that's a serious force
J35 can be launched from Liaoning and Shandong as well.

yes I just heard the news from position 3?
Now it would be interesting if an EMCAT were fitted to position 3. Adding even a couple KJ-600 to each of the ski jump carriers could change how they are employed considerably. The type 076 has will be able to show how much power will be needed to pull off such and upgrade, and would give the PLAN the opportunity to push for it at the next major refit.

The Type 004/005 are going to the successors of Fujian, and they were both labelled as nuclear powered supercarrier.

However, these two nuclear supercarriers will bear an exhaust port like Fujian because they are going to be hybrid supercarriers with nuclear reactors + gas turbines to power up the EMALS more efficiently than the Ford class nuclear supercarrier.

So all three carriers are going to have J-35, that is going to make a big difference if only Fujian can carry fifth gen fighter.

“nuclear reactors + gas turbines to power up the EMALS more efficiently”.

Any indication which gas turbines? CGT-40? If it’s the CGT-40, which is supposedly used on the Type 076, than it give another platform to perfect the gas turbine, almost certainly interned for the next generation follow ons to the Type 052D and Type 055, and possibly even the next variant of the Type 054 family; a new Type 054C with a 42 MW gas turbine; a world class blue water ASW frigate, and an 8000 ton follow (similar size to the Royal navy’s Type 26 with one 40 MW gas turbine or the Type 45 at 8500 tons with 2 x 21.5 MW gas turbines)

on to the Type 052D could be qualitative upgrade to the design if powered by a single .

This gas turbine would be similar to the Rolls Royce MT30 gas turbine, which has many applications, including the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier:

P.s. this new design could also lead to a modification of the Stobar carriers; separating the funnel from the command facilities.

Allowing for retrofitting larger elevators, and allowing the operation of the KJ-600.

Wasn't j 35 launched from fujian?
Did you meant to write something else

It does, I meant since it can also be launched from 16/17, it still definitely booast the capability of two STOBAR carriers.

They are back at Yulin
