Detailed News:
Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh has strongly condemned the alleged abduction of Maulana Mohibullah Miyaji, the Imam of BTCL T&T Colony Jame Mosque in Tongi, Gazipur, reportedly by radical ISKCON elements.
In a press release issued on Thursday (October 23), Hefazat-e-Islam’s Amir Allama Muhibbullah Babunagari and Secretary General Allama Sajedur Rahman stated that “India-backed ISKCON extremists” were continuously engaging in conspiracies against Muslims in Bangladesh.
According to Hefazat leaders, Maulana Mohibullah was repeatedly threatened after he delivered sermons (khutbahs) exposing immoral activities, “love traps,” and anti-Islamic propaganda allegedly linked to ISKCON. The statement claimed he received 12 consecutive threat letters, before being abducted from Gazipur. Later, he was found unconscious and chained near a roadside tree in Panchagarh’s Helipad Bazar area.
“This abduction is a national shame. We demand exemplary punishment of those involved,” Hefazat leaders declared in their statement, criticizing the interim government for “remaining silent whenever Muslims become victims of aggression from minority extremists.”
Background of the Threats
Before his disappearance, Mohibullah’s family discovered two threatening letters — one inside the mosque veranda and another near their home. The letter, dated September 14, 2025, contained a chilling warning and a drawing of a man in Islamic attire being held at knifepoint.
One part of the letter read:
“Your khatib will be isolated from his family and turned into a madman on the street. Because the goddess Yoni Devi and Kali Mata are supreme. Sooner or later, we will free East Bengal from Islamic fundamentalism. Even Baitul Mukarram will be turned upside down.”
Family members believe the threats and the abduction are directly linked.
Rescue in Panchagarh
On Thursday morning, locals found Mohibullah chained to a tree, unconscious near Helipad Bazar, and alerted police. Panchagarh Sadar Police rescued him and took him to Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment under Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman.
“He is stable now but still weak. He remembers being sprayed with something and beaten. His ears are damaged, and he feels dizzy when sitting,” said hospital sources.
District Commissioner Sabet Ali visited the imam at the hospital, while police confirmed they informed Tongi Police Station and his relatives.
Hefazat Links ISKCON to Past Violent Incidents
Hefazat leaders in their statement cited multiple past incidents, alleging that ISKCON has long been involved in criminal and extremist activities.
They referenced reports by The Times of India, saying:
“In November last year, Bangladesh’s Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) froze the bank accounts of 17 ISKCON members, including Indian agent Chinmoy Krishna Das, over money laundering charges.”
In June 2021, the Probhortok Sangha, a Sanatan organization in Chattogram, accused ISKCON of land grabbing, violence, and conspiracy. The statement further alleged that ISKCON, “under the influence of foreign embassies,” has built bases across the country “in Israeli style” and managed to manipulate parts of Bangladesh’s administration.
They added that ISKCON’s leader Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested last year over child sexual abuse allegations, and his followers attacked Chattogram court premises, killing lawyer Advocate Saiful Islam Alif.
“That patience of Chattogram’s Muslims has been mistaken as weakness by ISKCON. Otherwise, how dare they abduct an imam now?” the statement said.
Social Reaction
Following the incident, protests erupted in Panchagarh under the banner of Iman Aqida Rokkha Committee, demanding a ban on ISKCON’s activities in Bangladesh.
Locals recall that Mohibullah frequently warned during Friday sermons about ISKCON’s attempts to “corrupt Muslim youth and exploit women through deceptive relationships.”
Conclusion
The incident has sparked intense debate on social media, with many demanding a transparent investigation. As of Thursday evening, police said they are verifying the motive and tracking the route through which the Imam was taken from Gazipur to Panchagarh — a border district.
