PESHAWAR:
In view of growing security concerns and the threat of terrorism, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police have established its first-ever Sniper Squad — a specialised unit designed to enhance precision operations in high-risk areas.

According to the Central Police Office, the newly-formed squad, to operate under the Elite Force, has been equipped with modern weaponry, advanced gear, and specialised technology to effectively counter terrorist activities.

Police officials said the members of the Sniper Squad have undergone three months of intensive training, focusing on long-range marksmanship, identifying hidden targets, and operating in complex terrains.

Each squad will consist of 10 highly trained personnel, armed with state-of-the-art sniper rifles and thermal imaging devices, enabling them to conduct accurate operations even in cold weather and during nighttime.

In the first phase, the squads will be deployed in the southern districts, Malakand Division, and border regions of K-P — areas that have witnessed recurring terrorism incidents.

A spokesperson for the Central Police Office stated that the creation of this squad aims to strengthen the operational capacity of the provincial police and make operations in difficult geographical conditions more effective.

Officials added that the Sniper Squad will serve as a frontline force in the fight against terrorism, marking a significant step forward in enhancing the K-P police’s capabilities.

Who is giving the training? SSG?

"State-of-the-art" sniper rifles is somewhat nebulous.

RR, if you can share, what type of rifles do these teams typically employ?
Pakistani police snipers use one of the following depending on which provincial service they are with:

Elite/ATS dedicated sniper team:
AR10

PSR 308 - also known as surgeon locally. [Made in Pakistan]

Pakistan Ordinance Factories - AZB Mark 1 [This is a DMR]

SVD [Used in KPK and Punjab Police]

Sindh Police SSU have .50 BMGs but SSU is a mainly used for VVIP security - so I have not included them in this list as they have hardly ever completed any policing/CT ops.

Every TTP Squad is like this already- has been for years.
What about Thermal drones ?? Only Thermal drones can change the course of battle against terrorists. In most ambushes terrorist occupy high grounds then start raining bullets on convoys. Cheap DJI drone surveillance can remove lot a risks.

The key is ISR. Everything else flows from there. Sniper teams, Drones, IBOs, and so on. You can only hit what you can see. And There is clearly a massive breach in ISR, both at the border and in depth.

So since babus are too greedy to use UCAVs for constant surveillance, the only real "game changer" Pakistan can invest today is in few hundreds of these tethered aerostats in troubled areas
