Chittagong, 02 July 2026: The modernization activities of the Bangladesh Navy continue with the aim of strengthening the country's maritime security, increasing its capacity for patrolling and surveillance in coastal areas, humanitarian assistance and disaster management, and ensuring the protection of maritime resources and sovereignty. In continuation of this, today, Thursday (02-07-2026), 05 (five) patrol boats received under Japan's Official Security Assistance (OSA) were officially handed over to the Bangladesh Navy by the representative of the Japanese Government. At the ceremony organized on this occasion, Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. AKM Shamsul Islam, PSC, G, Defense Advisor to the Honorable Prime Minister of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was the chief guest and Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Mr. Shimada Tomoaki was present as the special guest. In addition, the Japanese delegation, senior naval officers, invited guests and relevant persons were present at the event.
In continuation of the long-standing mutual trust, friendship and strategic partnership with Japan, a bilateral agreement was signed between the governments of Bangladesh and Japan in November 2023 to procure 05 high-speed patrol boats. The project activities began in November 2023 through the exchange of notes and the boats arrived at Chittagong Port on 06 February 2026 at the end of the project activities. Under the supervision of Japanese experts, necessary training was provided to the members of the Navy on the operation and maintenance of the boats on 'Banouja Nirvik'. Each boat is 16.15 meters long, 3.53 meters wide, 1.78 meters deep and has a carrying capacity of 13.5 tons. The patrol boats are capable of traveling at a maximum speed of 32 miles. These boats, being suitable for navigation in shallow water and having high speed, will be able to conduct operations in the narrow and inaccessible waterways of the country's rivers, estuaries and coastal areas with greater efficiency and effectiveness. These boats will play an effective role in strengthening security in the country's seaports and coastal areas, patrolling, surveillance, search and rescue operations, humanitarian assistance, disaster management and rapid response to any emergency. It is worth noting that this project implemented under the OSA program will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Japan and expand the field of defense and technical cooperation.
