On January 15, Zeekr launched its 2024 Zeekr 009 all-electric MPV. Consumers can choose from two models, priced at 500,000 yuan (69,700 USD) and 588,000 yuan (82,000 USD), offering 702 km and 822 km cruising ranges, respectively. As an annual facelift model, the major changes are at the configuration level.

The 2024 Zeekr 009’s appearance remains unchanged compared to the previous model. The front face features a closed grille decorated with a straight waterfall design and inverted U-shaped headlights. Zeekr claims that the new car is the world’s first MPV to be equipped with an intelligent grille in which the design can change under different scenarios. The rear adopts the popular through-type taillights comprised of 402 LED units with the ZEEKR logo in the middle, high-mounted brake lights, and a roof spoiler.

Positioned as a medium-to-large six-seater MPV, the 2024 Zeekr 009 measures 5209/2024/1848 mm, and the wheelbase is 3205 mm. The side profile features dense-spoke rims, a suspended roof design, electric side sliding doors, and three-dimensional wheel eyebrows. Its drag coefficient is as low as 0.27Cd. Four exterior body colors are offered, namely, white, silver, blue, and black.

Both models come in AWD with dual electric motors and CATL’s CTP 3.0 Qilin ternary lithium battery packs. The electric motor each outputs 400 kW and 686 Nm, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The braking distance from 100 to 0 km/h is 36.9 meters. Two battery pack capacities in 116 kWh and 140 kWh are offered, providing a corresponding CLTC cruising range of 702 km and 822 km. Under fast charging, it takes 28 minutes to replenish the battery from 10% to 80%.
In terms of safety, the new car’s advanced driving assistance system called Zeekr AD is realized via seven 8-million-pixel high-definition cameras, four 2-million-pixel high-definition cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars, and a millimeter wave radar. The Zeekr AD supports functionalities including full-speed range adaptive cruise control, automated lane change, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, front and rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring.

Inside, the cockpit adopts a traditional T-shaped layout with a 15.4-inch large central control screen positioned at the center, an embedded 10.25-inch LCD instrument panel, and a 15.6-inch ceiling entertainment screen, which is consistent with the previous model. The built-in vehicle operating system is supported by the Zeekr OS along with an AI assistant.

Both models come standard with four functions as part of the configuration upgrades: digital rearview mirror, electric steering wheel adjustment, passenger seat upgrades, and third-row seat double-layer soundproof glass. The steering wheel supports Face ID account binding and the position can be automatically adjusted according to the driver’s usage habits.
Furthermore, the passenger seats can be electronically adjusted in 12 ways and support massaging. Each seat comes with a Yamaha headrest speaker. Other configurations include mobile phone remote control, OTA updates, facial recognition, wireless charging, ambient lighting, and a control screen on the interior of the second-row sliding door.
In 2024, Zeekr aims to sell 200,000 vehicles. In 2023, less than 20,000 units of the Zeekr 009 were sold, with an average of more than 1,000 units per month. Will the 2024 Zeekr 009 be more competitive in the market this year?

According to data from China Customs, China’s automobile (including chassis) exports will exceed 5.22 million units in 2023. Export volume exceeded 101.6 billion USD, and export volume and value broke historical records. From a market perspective, Chinese brand cars have been exported to more than 200 countries and regions worldwide.

Car exports make significant contributions to China’s economy

They considered that China’s total exports in 2023 will be USD 3.38 trillion, a decrease of 4.6%. The increase in automobile exports directly contributed to 1.2% of China’s exports.
As background, in 2023, China’s automobile production and sales will exceed 30 million units, setting historical records.

According to customs data compiled by CPCA, China ranks first in the world in both quantity and value of automobile exports. Specifically, China’s automobile exports were 5.22 million units from January to December 2023, with an export growth rate of 57%. Japanese car exports from January to November were 3.99 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 15%. The annual export volume in 2023 is expected to be approximately 4.3 million vehicles. In 2023, China’s automobile exports will exceed second-place Japan’s by nearly 1 million.
Regarding export volume, China’s automobile exports from January to December 2023 were 101.6 billion USD, with an export growth rate of 69%. China’s automobile exports also surpassed Japan’s automobile exports.

Exports of complete vehicles are much higher than exports of auto parts

In addition, China’s auto parts exports reached 87.7 billion USD from January to December, totaling 189.3 billion USD for complete vehicles and parts.

China’s automobile supply chain is complete, and costs are lower, which is one of the essential reasons for the increase in China’s automobile exports. Especially when the world’s automobile core shortage begins in 2021, the supply chain of Chinese automobile companies is relatively stable, ensuring stable production, little change in costs, and enhancing international competitiveness. This is reflected in the surge in China’s exports to Australia, Europe, and Southeast Asia. These regions are the main export sales areas of traditional international car companies.
In 2023, China’s ICE exports are expected to be around 3.52 million units, an increase of 54%; EV exports are expected to be 1.7 million units, an increase of 57%. China’s exports of new energy vehicles were strong in the first three quarters, but exports slowed slightly in the fourth quarter. This was mainly related to Europe’s anti-subsidy investigation of Chinese EVs. Among the EVs exported by China in 2023, Pure EVs will account for 90%, and PHEVs will account for 10%.

Major export companies

In terms of export companies, the top 10 companies are Chery Automobile with 922,830 vehicles, SAIC Passenger Cars with 685,018 vehicles, Tesla China with 344,078 cars, Geely Automobile with 274,101 cars, Great Wall Motors with 267,756 vehicles, BYD Automobile with 242,765 vehicles, Changan Automobile with 191,917 cars, and SAIC General Motors. Wuling has 184,935 vehicles, SAIC-GM has 100,006 vehicles, and Jiangsu Yueda Kia has 86,899 cars.
BYD’s car export ship

Main export areas

Comparing some data on China’s automobile exports overseas in 2023, although exports from South America and Africa in the southern hemisphere have declined, exports from developed countries have increased, especially exports from Mexico, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Israel have increased significantly.
China’s overall exports to Russia and the former CIS will proliferate in 2023, accounting for 42% and 59% of China’s auto export increase that year, respectively. In 2023, it is estimated that China’s automobile exports to the CIS countries will be approximately 1.35 million vehicles, an increase of 412%; the export value will be 25.6 billion USD, an increase of 327%, of which 950,000 cars will be exported to Russia, a rise of 481%; the export value will be 19.7 billion USD, an increase of 388%.

In 1998, Smart achieved a milestone with the introduction of the initial fortwo model. To celebrate Smart’s 25th Anniversary, a special edition of the #3 is set to launch on January 19. It will sell in Europe, priced at 46,990 EUR (~50,750 USD).

After a brand renewal (now an all electric brand) Smart achieved its 2023 goal, delivering nearly 70,000 units globally. Most of this volume was sold in China. To mark its 25th anniversary, Smart unveiled the #3 25th Anniversary “Starry Sky Commemorative Edition”.

The commemorative edition boasts enhanced sporty elements, such as a blackened smart logo, slim ventilation vent, and a red particle grid bumper. Coordinated proportions, dynamic rear spoilers, and 19-inch luxury wheels enhance its fashionable look. The interior features red decorations, a flat-bottom steering wheel, panoramic galaxy roof, 64-color ambient lights, and functional configurations. The commemorative edition also includes a 25th-anniversary exclusive plaque.

Under the hood, the #3 25th Anniversary Starry Sky Commemorative Edition features a rear-mounted single motor with 200 kW power, 580 km range, and a rapid 5.4-second acceleration time.
Smart was previously owned by Mercedes and Swatch. In 2019, Smart became joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely. It combines Mercedes’ global design for #3’s exterior and interior with Geely’s manufacturing and tech expertise. The Smart #3 is based on Geely’s SEA platform. Same as the Smart #1, Volvo EX30 and Zeekr X just to name a few.
The Smart’s current model line comprises two cars: Smart #1 and Smart #3. In November 2023, Smart #1 was included into the list of candidates for the Car of the Year in Europe 2024. Unfortunately, it didn’t make it to the list of finalists. This year, Smart will also launch an unnamed MPV, which exterior styling stays close to the Mercedes-Benz GLB.

UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) has announced BYD as the official E-Mobility Partner of the EURO-2024 championship. It will take place in Germany from 14 June to 14 July. BYD will provide electric vehicles to stakeholders during the tournament. Previously, Volkswagen was the UEFA’s mobility partner.

UEFA’s goal for this year is to organize the most sustainable European Championship to date. This is why the Union decided to cooperate with BYD, the world’s biggest NEV (new energy vehicle) maker. Moreover, in Q4 2023, BYD surpassed Tesla and became the largest EV manufacturer. Back to the UEFA, its goal is to provide a wide range of BYD’s NEVs to EURO-2024 participants.

Previously, Volkswagen was the leading partner of UEFA. It was the mobility partner of UEFA national team football competitions from 2018 to 2022, including EURO-2020. In September 2023, Volkswagen said it wouldn’t become a partner of EURO-2024. As we can see now, its place was taken by BYD.
BYD is thrilled to partner with UEFA EURO 2024 and proud to be the first E-mobility partner for this prestigious sports event, which will enable us to showcase our latest advancements in electric vehicles to a far-reaching audience
Michael Shu, managing director of BYD Europe

Aside from providing cars to EURO-2024’s stakeholders, BYD will showcase its latest NEV models at selected UEFA EURO-2024 venues. The exact list of models needed to be specified. However, CarNewsChina expects that BYD will display the latest YangWang models during the tournament, including YangWang U8, YangWang U9, and the recently revealed YangWang U7.
We are excited to welcome BYD, a pioneering brand with a 29-year pedigree in advanced battery technologies with a reputation for global innovation in new energy vehicles and the world’s biggest electric car company, as a partner for UEFA EURO 2024
Guy-Laurent Epstein, UEFA marketing director

BYD will also create official fan zones for folks who want to enjoy live match broadcasts. The automaker shared it will hold hundreds of events in more than 230 BYD stores across 19 European countries to celebrate the prestigious tournament together with football fans and customers. More on the UEFA-BYD partnership as we get it.

The YangWang U7 flagship sedan from BYD undergoes winter tests in China. At the same time, YangWang unveiled more specs of this beast before the official launch. The U7 appeared to be slightly bigger than the Mercedes-EQ EQS.

YangWang is a young luxury brand founded in China by the one and only BYD last year. It currently sells a single model, the YangWang U8 full-size EREV off-roader. Its second model, the U9 sports car, applied for a sales license in December 2023. The third car in the YangWang lineup is the full-size sedan called U7. It was recently unveiled in China with over 1,000 hp. YangWang has now provided more details about the new model.

YangWang U7 winter tests

According to recently unveiled photos, the YangWang U7 is undergoing winter tests in North China. Most likely, the testing location is Inner Mongolia. Many brands usually arrange winter tests here because it is the coldest point in China. Temperatures here can reach minus 40 degrees Celsius.

Thanks to winter tests, we can look at the actual photos of the YangWang U7 without camouflage. Previously, it was seen in camouflage or render images. We can once again underline its smooth shape with a sleek roofline. The test car has reasonably sized rims with aerodynamic covers. Its rear end has a single taillight unit and an active spoiler. The U7’s styling features are hidden door handles and a LiDAR sensor on the roof.

According to previous information, the YangWang U7 stands on the e⁴ platform (also known as YiSiFang). It features a four-motor 4WD with over 1,000 hp. However, we can see the photo of the YangWang U7 in action when the torrents of snow only come from the rear axle of this sedan. It hints that the YangWang U7’s front axle can be forcibly turned off.

More specs of the YangWang U7

YangWang confirmed the U7 sedan will have a drag coefficient of 0.195 Cd. It means this beast of a sedan has the best aerodynamics among all other production cars. We will underline that the Xiaomi SU7 reportedly has the same drag coefficient of 0.195 Cd. Here is the list of cars with the best aerodynamics:

  • YangWang U7 & Xiaomi SU7: 0.195 Cd
  • Geely Galaxy E8: 0.199 Cd
  • Mercedes-EQ EQS: 0,200 Cd

YangWang has also shared the exact dimensions of the U7 sedan. It boasts hefty dimensions of 5265/1998/1517 mm with a wheelbase of 3160 mm. For clarity, it is 42 mm longer, 70 mm wider, and 1 mm lower than the EQS. But the U7’s wheelbase is 50 mm shorter. So, the EQS has some benefits compared to the BYD’s upcoming flagship sedan.
As previously reported, the YangWang U7 will hit the market this year with a price tag of 1 million yuan (140K USD). We will monitor this vehicle, so stay tuned!

Haval, a prominent brand under the umbrella of Great Wall Motor (GWM), is gearing up to launch its latest iteration, the second-generation H9. Recent shots provide an intriguing sneak peek into the upcoming rugged SUV.

Haval and GWM Background

GWM, one of China’s largest privately owned automakers, boasts a diverse portfolio of brands. Haval, specializing in crossovers and SUVs, stands out with three distinct series. The H-series focuses on classic, urban SUVs, the Dog series is dedicated to light off-road vehicles (ORVs), and the Dragon series revolves around new energy vehicles. The previous H9 dates back to 2017 and has similar size specifications.

In 2023, Haval made waves with the launch of the second generation of the Big Dog series, introducing models like the Big Dog, and Raptor. Additionally, GWM’s presence extends beyond Haval, featuring subbrands like Wey, Tank (emphasizing hardcore SUVs), Poer / Shanhai (specializing in pickups), and SAR (already discontinued).

Sneak Peek into Haval H9

The new shots reveal Haval’s robust design philosophy, maintaining the tradition of a body-on-frame construction. Judging by the photos, the off-road capabilities of the H9 seem promising, with the ability to tackle challenging terrains such as steep slopes and sand crossings.

Exterior Highlights:
The H9’s exterior presents a tough demeanor with a substantial front grille and familiar round headlights. The short front and rear overhangs, combined with a long wheelbase, contribute to its anticipated mid-to-large SUV status. The sizable window area beyond the C-pillar looks clean, while the rear showcases a side-opening tailgate and a square-shaped spare tire carrier.

Interior Transformation:
The new shots show the revamped interior, featuring a redesigned steering wheel and a large floating center console screen. The gear shifter design aligns with other models in Haval’s lineup, emphasizing functionality with physical buttons and knobs.

Technical Options:
Under the hood, the H9 is expected to offer a choice between a 2.0T gasoline engine and a 2.4T diesel engine; both mated to 8AT and 9AT transmissions. The current Haval H9 houses a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 165 kW of power and 385 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. As for its handling, the H9 is reportedly equipped with front and rear differential locks, a second-generation all-terrain control system with various modes, and features like CCO off-road cruise control and TAB tank turning.

Overview

As we await further details and an official release, the new shots of the Haval H9 hint at a formidable addition to Haval’s diverse lineup, catering to enthusiasts seeking a capable and rugged SUV experience. Stay tuned for updates on this off-road edition of the H series from Haval.

In 2023, 21.706 million new cars were sold in the Chinese market, with sales increasing by 5.6% year-on-year, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Although the overall market grew by more than 5%, due to the impact of EVs and PHEVs, ICE sales fell from 14.870 million vehicles in 2022 to 13.958 million in 2023, a decrease of 6.1%. Sales of EVs and PHEVs increased from 5.679 million to 7.748 million, up 36.5%. EVs and PHEVs have accounted for 35.7% of the total market sales.
Note: The sales data in this article come from CPCA: CPCA’s statistical basis is the retail sales of passenger cars produced in China. Sales data do not include imported cars and commercial models. Brand sales do not include sub-brands.

Market Dominance and Brand Rankings

Like 2022, 4 brands will sell more than 1 million vehicles in 2023. They are BYD, Volkswagen, Toyota, and Honda.
Chinese automaker BYD leads the way, achieving sales of 2,571,109 vehicles in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 43.3%. BYD has ranked first in sales of Chinese automobile brands for four consecutive quarters, with a market share of 11.85% this quarter.
Volkswagen ranked second with sales of 2,228,635 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 0.2%, and a market share of 10.27%. Although Volkswagen was the sales champion every quarter in 2022, after entering 2023, Volkswagen’s sales have been defeated by BYD every quarter.

Toyota ranked third with sales of 1,702,773 units, a year-on-year decrease of 3.8%, and a market share of 7.84%.
Honda and Changan rounded out the top five with sales of 1,193,019 and 962,061 vehicles, respectively.

BYD has extended its dominance in the new energy vehicle (NEV) field, ranking first in electric and plug-in hybrid cars. BYD has a market share of up to 26% in China’s Pure EV market. The brand’s dominance is even more pronounced in the PHEV category, capturing 48% of the market in 2023.

Pure Electric Vehicle Market

In the pure electric vehicle market, BYD sold 1,318,835 vehicles, with a market share of 25.58%. Tesla ranked second with sales of 603,664 cars, and the Model Y alone sold more than 456,000 vehicles.
In the ranking of electric vehicle sales, Aion, Wuling, and Nio occupy the third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively.

Top Individual Models

The top three vehicles in the Chinese market for 2023 were:
  1. Tesla Model Y: Impressive sales figure of 456,394 cars.
  2. BYD Qin Plus: Second position, with 434,213 units sold.
  3. BYD Song Plus: Claiming the third position, with 390,213 vehicles sold.

Tesla China has announced a price cut for Model 3 and Model Y on January 12. As of now, the starting price for the Model 3 is 245,900 yuan (34,400 USD), reflecting a reduction of 15,500 yuan (2,200 USD). Meanwhile, the Model Y starts at 258,900 yuan (36,300 USD), with a price decrease of 7,500 yuan (1,100 USD).

The new Model 3

All new Model 3 cars available in the Chinese market are the latest models. The new Model 3 cars have been delivered nationwide from October 2023. The rear-wheel-drive model boasts a CLTC range of 606 kilometers, a top speed of 200 km/h, and an acceleration time of 6.1 seconds from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour.
The long-range model shares the same top speed but accelerates more swiftly, covering the 0 to 100 kilometers per hour dash in 4.4 seconds, with a CLTC cruising range of 713 kilometers.

Options for the Model 3 include complimentary pure black paint, while pearl white and deep-sea blue paint options are available for an additional 8,000 yuan (1,100 USD). Starry sky gray and flame red paint options can be chosen for an extra 12,000 yuan (1,700 USD).
The refreshed Model 3 interior offers a 15.4-inch central touch screen and an 8-inch rear control screen, providing features such as seat heating, air volume adjustment, and music or video playback. The long-range all-wheel-drive model has a 17-speaker sound system for a “theater-like immersion” experience.
Despite the recent price cut, it’s worth noting that Tesla increased the price by 28,000 yuan (3,900 USD) when it launched the new Model 3 in 2023, so the current price of Model 3 is still higher than last year.

The purchase price of Model Y RD increased instead of falling

In an unexpected move, Tesla has decided to cancel the recommended discounts and insurance subsidies for the Model 3 RD version and Model Y RD version. Previously, the recommendation discount would reduce the user’s cost by 1,750 yuan (250 USD), regardless of the recommender. Additionally, insurance subsidies, ranging from 6,000 to 8,000 yuan (800 to 1,100 USD), were offered irrespective of the insurance company chosen. This policy essentially acted as a cash discount, even for those who decided not to purchase insurance but stored their new car in the garage.
However, with the price cut on January 12, these two incentives have been withdrawn. Furthermore, the bonus for the Model Y RD was smaller, resulting in an unexpected increase in the actual purchase price of the Model Y RD model.
The table below illustrates the specific price changes:

Tesla has raised prices multiple times in China H2 2023

It is worth mentioning that Tesla has made multiple price increases last year:
On October 27, the Model Y Performance took the lead in increasing its price by 14,000 yuan (2,000 USD), with the current price starting from 363,900 yuan (51,000 USD).
On November 9, the Model Y LR increased by 2,500 yuan (400 USD), and the current price was 302,400 yuan (42,400 USD); the Model 3 LR refreshed version increased by 1,500 yuan (200 USD), and the current price was 297,400 yuan (41,700 USD).
On November 14, the price of the Tesla Model 3 RD refreshed version increased by 1,500 yuan (200 USD), with an adjusted starting price of 261,400 yuan (36,600 USD); the Model Y RD version increased by 2,500 yuan (400 USD), with an adjusted starting price of 266,400 yuan (37,300 USD).

JAC (Jianghuai Automobile Co) and Nio have a long story of cooperation. The Anhui-based car maker manufactured Nio cars from 2018 until December 2023, when the Chinese startup acquired F1 and F2 plants from JAC.
Former JAC-Nio F1 plant
On January 11, Nio and JAC signed the strategic cooperation agreement on battery swapping. They will establish battery swapping standards and battery swapping tech. Moreover, Nio and JAC will build and share a battery swap station network. Nio will also help JAC develop NEVs (BEV, EREV, PHEV, FCEV).

JAC is actively pushing the sodium-battery-powered EV manufacturing. In December last year, it began trial production of the JAC Yiwei E10X hatchback with HiNa’s sodium battery on board. It hints that Nio and JAC can develop swap standards for sodium packs.

Nio’s agreement with Wenergy and ATHG

The same day, Nio announced a strategic cooperation with Wenergy Group and Anhui Transportation Holding Group to build battery swap stations jointly. They will jointly build 1,000 battery swap stations with energy storage, charging, and battery swap capabilities. They will also promote other aspects of the battery swap business.

As we can see, Nio is gaining momentum, signing strategic cooperation agreements with many Chinese companies. Previously, Nio confirmed cooperation with Geely and Changan. With a massive EV output from Geely, Changan, JAC, and Chery, Nio can focus more on providing a battery swap network than building cars.

On January 11, Deepal released the name of its first new energy hardcore off-road SUV model – Deepal G318. The G318 may cost around 300,000 yuan (~42,000 USD). Deepal is an NEV (new energy vehicle) brand from Changan founded in 2022. It has recently started sales in Thailand, aiming to sell 450,000 units globally this year.

It is worth pointing out that 318 is the name of a national highway in China. The most famous section of 318 is the Sichuan-Tibet line from Chengdu to Tibet. In recent years, it has become popular to take road trips to Tibet along this route. Perhaps this is Deepal’s inspiration for its new SUV name, targeting road trippers.

Positioned as a medium-sized SUV, the Deepal G318 has a body size of 4750/1959/1820 mm and a wheelbase of 2880 mm. According to a leaked information, the Deepal G318 is an EREV. It has a 1.5-liter engine that doesn’t transfer any toruqe to the wheels. It has two electric motors with the rated power of 35 kW and 60 kW. The peak power output has yet to be revealed. The G318 has two LFP batery variants: for 18.4 kWh and 35.1 kWh.

The Deepal G318 adopts the popular square shape for off-road vehicles. Its front profile is relatively square, coupled with C-shaped LED headlights, a large closed front panel, and a solid bumper in the lower surrounding area. The lower edge of the window at the D-pillar has a rising profile, matched with hidden door handles, high-clearance wheel arches, petal-shaped rims, thick tires, roof racks, and roof lights.

The rear is equipped with the iconic external spare tire of hardcore off-road vehicles. At the same time, judging from the trunk door handle design, the Deepal G318’s tailgate will adopt a side-opening form, and the taillights are also C-shaped, echoing the headlights. At the same time, the Deepal G318 will support towing and tank turn mode to let the vehicle turn 360 degrees on the spot.
Winter test spy shots
Earlier, the Deepal G318 was spied in camouflage conducting winter tests in China.

At this time, the detailed powertrain specifications have not been revealed. It is only currently known that an extended-range hybrid setup will be used. Once launched, the Deepal G318 will compete directly with models such as BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5.
We’ll watch closely for more info, stay tuned!

Lynk & Co, a collaborative venture between Geely and Volvo, is on the brink of introducing its 2024 edition of the 09 EM-P SUV, on January 16, 2024. This development marks another stride in the evolution of the brand, rooted in a partnership between Geely and Volvo (acquired by Geely in 2010) that began in 2016.

Founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2016, Lynk & Co is currently headquartered in China. Lynk & Co’s domestic model lineup in China comprises seven distinct vehicles – the 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 08, 09 (including its forthcoming 09 EM-P). The brand’s presence in overseas markets is simplified, with the Lynk & Co 01 taking the spotlight as the sole offering.

The current version of the 09 was originally introduced in mid-2023. Positioned as a large SUV, the vehicle boasts hefty dimensions of 5042/1977/1780mm and a wheelbase of 2984mm. The design incorporates blackened B and C pillars, creating a suspended roof effect. The SUV rides on ten-spoke rims, a feature that remains unchanged from its predecessor. However, the 2024 09 EM-P edition showcases significant improvements.

The 09 EM-P differentiates itself with a plug-in hybrid system featuring the 187-kW Drive-E 2.0TD engine and three electric motors coupled with a 3-speed DHT gearbox. This powerful combination yields a system’s maximum power of 408kW, providing an impressive 4.9-second acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h.
For comparison, the 2023 edition had 382kW of peek power and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds. The CLTC (China’s standardized testing) pure electric range reaches 190km. The 09 EM-P features a dual-chamber air suspension system. The adaptability extends further with adjustable ground clearance, catering to diverse driving conditions.

The Lynk & Co 09 EM-P SUV’s technical specifications place it in a landscape where consumers seek a balance between performance and sustainability. As the automotive industry evolves, the adaptability and eco-friendly features of the 2024 edition 09 EM-P reflect a broader shift in consumer preferences. The true measure of its impact will be observed on the road after January 16, as real-world feedback, sales performance, and consumer reactions determine its standing in the market. The 09 EM-P will be priced between 300,000 and 400,000 yuan (42,300 – 56,400 USD).

BYD sold 242,759 vehicles outside China in 2023, according to data from BYD and Chinese Customs. In 2022, this data is only 55,656 vehicles, an increase of 336% in one year.

In 2022, overseas car sales will account for 3.0% of BYD Group’s passenger car sales. However, in 2023, the proportion of automobile sales in overseas markets increased to 8.1%.
Regarding vehicle power types exported this year, there were 211,063 BEVs, accounting for 86.9%. There were 31,696 PHEVs, accounting for 13.1%.

Let’s take a look at which models BYD sold overseas (sorted by overseas sales in 2023):

ATTO 3 (Yuan Plus)

ATTO 3 sold 100,020 units in 2023. ATTO 3 is BYD’s primary overseas model. It is called Yuan Plus in some areas. This model can be seen in almost all places where BYD cars are sold.

Dolphin

Dolphin sold 74,884 units in 2023. Dolphin has only been on sale in most markets in recent months. It has been quite successful in achieving such sales results and has recently surpassed ATTO 3 in sales in many places.

Song Plus

Song Plus sales were 28,182 units. Unlike the above two Pure EVs, this model is available in EV and PHEV versions and is also called Seal U in some markets. This model is mainly sold in Latin America. For example, the Song Plus is very popular in Brazil.

Seal

Seal sold 23,606 units. Seal is also BYD’s primary overseas model, but it is only available in a few markets. In 2024, Seal will be launched in more markets.

Destroyer 05

The fifth place is Destroyer 05, with 4241 units sold. Many people are very unfamiliar with this model, which is a PHEV model. The main selling point of the Destroyer 05 is its affordability and ability to save fuel even when the battery is depleted.

Seagull

Seagull sold 4,016 units, 3,500 of which were completed in December. Seagull will be named Dolphin mini in some regions. This model is unavailable in most areas and will become a cost-effective EV product priced under 20,000 USD.

E6

Next is the BYD E6, which sold 2,504 units. Most of this model is used by taxis or online ride-hailing services, and it has supply contracts with many tax companies.

Han and Tang

BYD HanBYD Tang
The following two products are BYD’s early overseas products. BYD Han sold 2,462 units, and BYD Tang sold 1,910 units. They were launched in some areas early and significantly contributed to BYD’s overseas reputation.

Others

In addition, four models, Yuan Pro, D1, E2, and Qin Plus, are also sold in some regions. But they sold less, with a total of only 934 units.

The sales for each month of 2023 have been announced, and we have compiled the sales data for Q4 2023 for you. In Q4 2023, 6.466 million new cars were sold in the Chinese market, with sales increasing by 14.2% year-on-year.

There are two reasons for the substantial growth in sales. The first reason is that the coronavirus epidemic is still ongoing in China in Q4 2022, significantly impacting car production and sales.
Another reason is that new energy vehicles have played a significant role in market recovery and have experienced relatively substantial growth. Among them, 1.645 million electric cars and 908,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles were sold, accounting for 39.5% of total vehicle sales.

Note: The sales data in this article come from CPCA: CPCA’s statistical basis is the retail sales of passenger cars produced in China. Sales data do not include imported cars and commercial models. Brand sales do not include sub-brands.

Market Dominance and Brand Rankings

Chinese automaker BYD leads the way, achieving sales of 778,307 vehicles in Q4 2023, a year-on-year increase of 22.1%. BYD has ranked first in sales of Chinese automobile brands for four consecutive quarters, with a market share of 12.04% this quarter.
Volkswagen ranked second with sales of 666,892 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 10.1%, and a market share of 10.31%. Although Volkswagen was the sales champion every quarter in 2022, after entering 2023, Volkswagen’s sales have been defeated by BYD every quarter.

Toyota ranked third with sales of 454,428 units. However, it fell by 6.6% year-on-year. It was the only one among the top 5 brands to experience a decline in sales, with a market share of 7.03%.
Honda and Geely rounded out the top five with sales of 364,466 and 272,436 vehicles, respectively.

BYD has extended its dominance in the new energy vehicle (NEV) field, ranking first in electric and plug-in hybrid cars. BYD has a market share of up to 25% in China’s Pure EV market. The brand’s dominance is even more pronounced in the PHEV category, capturing 39% of the market in Q4 2023.

Pure Electric Vehicle Market

In the pure electric vehicle market, BYD sold 425,121 vehicles, with a market share of 25.84%. Tesla ranked second with sales of 169,935 cars, and the Model Y alone sold more than 136,000 vehicles.
In the ranking of electric vehicle sales, Wuling, Aion, and Volkswagen occupy the third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively.

Top Individual Models

The top three vehicles in the Chinese market for Q4 2023 were:
  1. Tesla Model Y: Impressive sales figure of 136,285 cars.
  2. BYD Seagull: Second position, with 119,442 units sold.
  3. Nissan Sylphy: Claiming the third position, with 118,729 vehicles sold.
