On January 17, Hyundai announced that Beijing Hyundai had sold its Chongqing factory to Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Yufu Industrial Park Construction Investment Co., Ltd. for 1.62 billion yuan (226 million USD) at the end of last year, a figure less than half of its initial listing price previous year, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

The Chongqing factory, the fifth complete car manufacturing plant established by Beijing Hyundai in China, was touted as the company’s “most advanced” factory. Construction began in 2015, and the factory officially commenced operations in August 2017. Covering an area of 1.87 million square meters, the factory had a total investment of 7.7 billion yuan (1.07 billion USD) and an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles. However, due to various reasons, it ceased operations in December 2021.
Initially, the Beijing Hyundai Chongqing factory was listed for sale on August 11, 2023, with a transfer base price of 3.68 billion yuan (513 million USD). However, the sale was not completed by the deadline. After the unsuccessful auction, the factory was relisted on September 27 with a reduced base price of 2.58 billion yuan (360 million USD), a reduction of 1.1 billion yuan (153 million USD). Subsequently, it underwent a third listing with a base price of 1.917 billion yuan (267 million USD) until it was finally sold for 1.62 billion yuan (226 million USD).

Hyundai Motor stated that this sale is part of an effort to reasonably adjust the operational model of its factories in China to enhance efficiency. Industry insiders believe that the Chongqing municipal government primarily led the sales process. Yonhap News Agency also mentioned that Hyundai Motor might consider selling its Changzhou factory.
According to public data, Hyundai Motor’s sales in China peaked at 1.14 million vehicles in 2016. However, since facing marketing setbacks in China in 2017, the company sold its first factory in Beijing in 2021. This sale has reduced Hyundai’s manufacturing presence in China from five to three factories, including the second and third Beijing factories and the Changzhou factory.
Beijing Hyundai’s 2023 sales data showed a total annual sales volume of 257,000 units, a year-over-year increase of 2.8%. Additionally, in 2023, Beijing Hyundai’s export volume exceeded 10,000 units. Furthermore, Beijing Hyundai announced the launch of the eleventh-generation Sonata and fifth-generation Shengda in 2024 and plans to develop over six pure electric and plug-in hybrid products within the next three years.

Hyundai ElantraHyundai ElantraHyundai Elantra
Sales data indicated that the new Elantra surpassed 110,000 units, a year-over-year increase of 19%. The SUV Gemini (fifth-generation Tucson L, upgraded ix35 Mosa) reached 100,000 units, a year-over-year increase of 2%, with the upgraded ix35 Mosa achieving a monthly sales figure exceeding 5,000 units.
The current factory sales are mainly due to Beijing Hyundai’s declining sales in the Chinese market, resulting in overcapacity and shrinking business. Yueda Kia, another Sino-Korean joint venture, also has the same problem. To alleviate the problem of overcapacity, Yueda Kia exported half of the cars produced outside China in 2023 to cope with the decline in demand in the Chinese market.

At the Changan Automobile Global Partner Conference on January 16, 2024, Chairman Zhu Huarong delved into the latest developments of the joint venture between Changan and Huawei, shedding light on their collaborative journey. The roots of this collaboration trace back to November 25, 2023, when both companies signed an “Investment Cooperation Memorandum.”

The newly established joint venture between Changan and Huawei is tentatively named “Newcool,” focusing on seven major areas, including smart driving, intelligent cockpit, smart car digital platform, intelligent car cloud, AR-HUD, and smart car lights. Huawei recently revealed plans to establish a company dedicated to developing, designing, producing, selling, and servicing intelligent automotive systems and components.
Signing of the initial agreement in 2023
Huawei’s new company named Huawei Smart Car Solutions, was recently established with a registered capital of 1 billion yuan. The new car company is located at its headquarters building in Shenzhen with an established date of January 16, 2024. The two companies aim to support this entity in becoming a leader in the global automotive intelligent system and component solutions industry. The new brand company and Huawei do not manufacture vehicles on their own.

Previous cooperation between the two companies
Changan’s Chairman Zhu Huarong clarified that the Newcool joint venture would not engage in complete vehicle manufacturing, emphasizing a focus on public resource platform development. The initial phase involves Changan and Huawei laying the groundwork and later opening the platform to other automotive enterprises and the wider auto community.
The establishment of the Newcool joint venture signifies a strategic alignment between Changan and Huawei, leveraging their strengths for the benefit of the automotive industry. The HI mode (Huawei’s full-stack integration solution), chosen by Avatr under the joint venture, is hailed as the optimal choice by Zhu Huarong, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and policy requirements and safeguarding user interests.
The joint venture is a natural progression in a series of cooperations between the companies. In the past, Huawei was a supplier for Avatr, the joint venture between Changan and CATL. The Chinese tech giant also helped Changan and CATL develop the CHN platform for Avatr vehicles. Last year, Huawei worked with Deepal (another Changan brand) in developing smart driving solutions.

The Changan-Huawei collaboration continues to evolve, with the Newcool joint venture poised to drive innovation in smart driving solutions, contributing to the global landscape of intelligent connected vehicles. Interestingly, Huawei also developed four other joint projects: Aito (Huawei & Seres), Luxeed (Huawei & Chery), Stelato (Huawei & BAIC), and a new upcoming Huawei & JAC project, whose name has yet to be revealed. In China, Huawei sells Aito and Luxeed cars via Huawei Flagship stores and their related HIMA stores. The industry eagerly awaits the unfolding chapters of this groundbreaking partnership.

In the second week (W2) of the new year, January 8 – 14, China’s EV market had mixed development, with some brands continuing to decline while others already started growing (mainly Li Auto, Aito, and Tesla). BYD was down 9%, Tesla was up 130%, and Nio was down 43% from the week before. Among EV startups, Aito holds its surprise lead over Li Auto.

The weekly data were published by Li Auto, and they represent weekly sales. The background data are weekly insurance registrations. The numbers are rounded and present new energy vehicles (NEV), the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.
BYD got the first spot, registering 40,300 EVs, down 9.23% from 44,400 the week before. In the first half of the month (January 1 -14), BYD sold 84,700 EVs in China.

BYD’s brand YangWang, which has a sole model on sale – a 1.089 million yuan (153,000 USD) hardcore SUV YangWang U9, registered 270 vehicles, down 16.9% from the week before.
Second, BYD’s brand, Fang Cheng Bao (FCB), which also has a sole model on sale called Bao 5 (Leopard 5 in English), registered 1,060 vehicles, down 5% from the week before. FCB is still a premium brand but way cheaper than YangWang. Bao 5 UV has a price tag of around 300,000 yuan (42,000 USD).
The third BYD brand, Denza, is a former joint venture with Mercedes-Benz, which BYD took control of in 2021. It is positioned above BYD-badged cars but below FCB. Denza registered 1,500 cars, down 6.25% from 1,600 the week before. In the first half of the month (January 1-14), Denza sold 3,100 cars in China.

Tesla registered 7,400 EVs, up 131.25% from 3,200 the week before. In the first half of the month (January 1-14), Tesla sold 10,600 EVs in China.
Models sales breakdown:
  • Model 3: 1,700 units
  • Model Y: 5,700 units

Nio registered 1,700 EVs, down 43.33% from 3000 the week before. In the first half of the month (January 1-14), Nio sold 4,700 EVs in China.
Main models sales breakdown:
  • ES6: 630 units
  • ET5: 560 units
  • EC6: 290 units

Huawei’s Aito got the first spot among EV startups for the second time and registered 6,800 vehicles, up 15.25% from 5,900 vehicles the week before. In the first half of the month (January 1-14), Aito sold 12,800 vehicles in China. Aito sells both BEVs and EREVs.
Aito is a big surprise of 2023 as Huawei got tired of its struggling sales and used its deep pockets to introduce radical price cuts and various perks, and it worked. Aito jumped from 2k-3k monthly sales to almost 25,000 sold vehicles in December 2023 and became a relevant player in the tight China EV race.
Models sales breakdown:
  • M5: 420 units
  • M7: 6,400 units

Li Auto was closely second in EV startup sales, registering 6,800 vehicles, up 58.14% from 4,300 the week before. In the first half of the month (January 1-14), Li Auto sold 11,000 vehicles in China. Li Auto sells only EREV, and its first BEV Li Mega minivan will be introduced on March 1.
Models sales breakdown:
  • L7: 3,000 units
  • L8: 2,000 units
  • L9: 1,800 units
Changan’s Deepal got the third post, making it another surprise as we are not used to seeing it so high on the leaderboard. Deepal registered 3,300 vehicles, down 2.94% from 3,400 the week before. In the first half of the month (January 1-14), Deepal sold 6,700 vehicles in China. Deepal sells BEVs, EREVs, and FCEVs (hydrogen) versions of its two models, the SL03 sedan and S7 SUV.
Xpeng almost didn’t make it into the top 10, registering 1,400 EVs, the same as the 1,400 units sold the week before, good for ninth spot. In the first half of the month, Xpeng sold 2,800 EVs in China.
Models sales breakdown:
  • G6: 410 units
  • P7i: 370 units
  • G9: 260 units
  • X9: 180 units
  • P5: 160 units
Volkswagen registered 3,500 EVs, down 7.89% from 3,800 the week before. In the first half of the month, VW sold 7,300 EVs in China. VW launched the 2024 ID.3 and ID.4 on January 1 in China.
Edit: The article was updated with model sales breakdown for some brands.

Recently, Xiaomi applied to register a series of Chinese and English trademarks for “Xiaomi Automobile Gigafactory”, “Xiaomi EV Hyperfactory”, “Xiaomi Titan”, “Xiaomi Titan Alloy”, and “Xiaomi Super Motor”. The current trademark status is awaiting review, according to the China National Intellectual Property Administration Trademark Office.

As early as July 2019, Xiaomi Communication Technology Co., Ltd. added the words “sales of auto parts” to its business scope. On November 12, 2020, Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software Co., Ltd. applied for a patent for lithium battery electrodes and lithium batteries. Then on March 30, 2021, Xiaomi announced that it would invest 10 billion yuan in automotive manufacturing in the next 10 years to become one of the top five automobile manufacturers in the world.
Last year, Xiaomi’s first vehicle model called the SU7 was unveiled. Furthermore, at the Xiaomi Auto Technology Conference in December, Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s founder, chairman, and CEO, introduced Xiaomi Auto’s five core technologies: electric powertrain, battery, large die-casting, smart cockpit, and autonomous driving. Lei Jun also announced that Xiaomi is the only car manufacturer in China that has mass production of self-developed alloy materials.

Xiaomi HyperEngine V6 & V6sXiaomi HyperEngine V8s
After Xiaomi officially announced that it would build a car, its first project was to make a super motor. The result of that project was two super motors: the HyperEngine V6 and V8, which are currently being mass-produced and will be installed on the first batch of the Xiaomi SU7 models.

Furthermore, Xiaomi also self-developed a new 800V silicon carbide high-voltage platform, which has a maximum voltage of 871V. In addition, it is collaborating with CATL to jointly develop Xiaomi’s 800V high-voltage battery pack. It is worth mentioning that Xiao also built its battery production factory.

Xiaomi SU7 offers two CLTC cruising ranges of 668 km and 800 km. The 800V super fast charging platform can replenish the battery by 220 km with 5 minutes of charging and by 510 km with 15 minutes of charging.

The Chinese regulator exposed the Deepal G318 EREV off-roader from Changan during the homologation process. It is an SUV that aims to compete with the GWM’s Tank 400 Hi4-T and the BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5. Let’s get to know it better.

Deepal G318 render image
Deepal is an NEV brand founded in 2022 under Changan. Its current model line comprises two cars: SL03 (available as BEV, EREV, and FCEV) and S7 (BEV / EREV). Last year, Deepal announced its global strategy. In early 2024, Deepal started sales of its two models in Thailand. They were renamed here to L07 and S07. This year, Deepal aims to sell 450,000 units globally. The third vehicle under the Deepal brand is the G318 SUV. Today, it was revealed by the Chinese MIIT.
The Highway 318
Previously, the new SUV was known by its codename C318. In January this year, Changan announced its official name will be G318. It is called after the famous highway on the China-Nepal border. This name should underline the off-road spirit of the Deepal G318.

Deepal G318 specs

The brand officials previously revealed the exterior design of the Deepal G318. It is a sturdy off-roader with a long bonnet line, wide wheel arches, blocky headlights, and large bumpers. In the back, the Deepal G318 has a swing-out trunk door with a spare wheel mounted on it. The dimensions of this off-roader are 4915/1985/1885 mm with a wheelbase of 2880 mm.

With a spare wheel on the rear door, its length reaches 4998 mm. The heavy-duty roof racks increase height to 1960 mm. So, the G318 is a medium-to-large SUV. Its front and rear tracks are 1690 and 1686 mm. The approach and departure angles are 27 and 31 degrees, respectively. The G318 has three wheel options: 255/65 R18, 265/60 R18, 255/55 R20.

G318 powertrain details

The Deepal G318 is an EREV SUV. It means it has a 1.5-liter 110-kW petrol-powered engine under the hood that doesn’t transfer any torque to the wheels. Instead, it supplies power to the battery pack or electric motors. Speaking about e-motors, the G318 has two powertrain options:

  • Single motor (XTDM33), RWD, 185 kW peak power, 175 km/h top speed
  • Two electric motors (AYDM01 + XTDM33), 4WD, 316 kW (131 kW + 185 kW), 185 km/h top speed.
This brawny off-roader has an LFP battery made by CALB on board. Its capacity has yet to be revealed. According to previous information, this SUV will have two variants: 18.4 kWh and 35.1 kWh. Depending on the powertrain option, the curb weight of this SUV lies in the 2060 – 2,360 kg range. The gross weight is 2,505 – 2,800 kg. The G318 with 4WD can tow up to 1,600 kg. Inside, it has five seats.
The Deepal G318 will soon hit the Chinese market with a price tag of around 300,000 yuan (~42,000 USD). It will rival the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 and Tank 400 Hi4-T. More on this vehicle as we get it.

It will be launched in April 2024 (instead of June as originally planned). We may assume that this move is likely to counter the competition from a likely rival, AITO M7.

The vehicle can realize dual-mode switching between an SUV and a pickup by opening the rear dome to transform into a pickup truck. Both the front and rear featured a digital screen that displayed information such as the vehicle name and battery information. Changan also shared that the vehicle will support low-orbit satellite communication to be able to connect to the Internet at any time, and never lose contact.

Qiyuan E07

The Qiyuan E07 has a pickup truck body posture with a relatively downward slope of the roof line and thick roof racks. The appearance is similar to the CD701 concept car. The front face features a closed grille paired with a C-shaped LED headlight set. The taillight adopts a ring shape in the rear. The Qiyuan E07 measures 5045/1996/1640 (1665, 1695) mm, with a 3120 mm wheelbase, positioned as a medium-to-large SUV. It can seat five people as the standard and runs on 20-inch or 21-inch rims.

Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) revealed the BYD Sea Lion 07 specs, the latest addition to the Ocean series. It is a mid-size fastback SUV with optional 4WD and cool exterior styling. It is slightly smaller than the recently launched BYD Song L.

BYD Sea Lion 07 styling and size

The styling of the BYD Sea Lion follows the pre-production version that debuted at the Guangzhou Auto Show last year. It has a round-ish design with a sloped bonnet line that forms a distinguishing shape of the fastback SUV. The front end of the Sea Lion 07 adopts headlights, similar to the BYD Seal and Seal-U (Song Plus). It has retractable door handles, a ducktail spoiler, and a roof spoiler.
Sea Lion 07Song Plus
The exact dimensions of the Sea Lion 07 are 4830/1925/1620 mm with a wheelbase of 2930 mm. For comparison, it is 10 mm shorter, 25 mm narrower, and 60 mm higher than the BYD Song L. These two EVs might look like direct competitors. However, the Sea Lion 07 resembles a family-friendly SUV, while the Song L has a much sportier design. So, these cars aim at different groups of buyers. The Sea Lion 07 has several wheel options: 235/50 R19, 255/45 R19, and 245/40 R20.

Back to the Sea Lion 07, its front and rear tracks equal 1660 mm. Approach and departure angles are 16 and 19 degrees, respectively. Front and rear overhangs are 900 mm and 1000 mm, respectively. The Sea Lion 07 has a 5-seat layout. It adopts the CTB (Cell to Body) setup, so its battery top cover is integrated into the floor, increasing volume utilization by 66% and vertical space by 10 mm.

BYD Sea Lion powertrain

BYD Sea Lion 07 specs
There is no information about the Sea Lion 07’s battery capacity. However, the Chinese MIIT disclosed the information about this vehicle’s electric motors:
  • 170 kW peak power, 70 kW rated power, 210 km/h top speed
  • 230 kW peak power, 70 kW rated power, 225 km/h top speed
  • 4WD, 390 kW (160 kW + 230 kW) peak power, 145 kW (75 kW + 70 kW) rated power, 225 km/h top speed
The curb weight of the BYD Sea Lion 07 lies at 2,155 – 2,330 kg, depending on the powertrain. The gross weight is 2,530 – 2,705 kg. This vehicle will rival the Tesla Model Y in China. CarNewsChina expects its price to lie in the 200,000 – 260,000 yuan range (28,150 – 36,580 USD).

The Baojun Yep Plus five-door SUV from the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture was revealed in China. It will launch in Q1 this year with a 75-kW electric motor, a 150 km/h top speed, and a CLTC range of 401 km. Let’s get to know this model better.

Baojun is a young brand under SGWM joint venture formed by Chinese SAIC, Wuling, and American General Motors. It focuses on manufacturing electric cars for big cities.
The three-door Baojun Yep
Last year, Baojun launched the Yep city car, which looks like a bulky off-road SUV. It has three doors, a body length of 3381 mm, an e-motor for 50 kW, and a 28.1-kWh LFP battery for a 303 km range. In 2023, the Baojun Yep’s cumulative sales reached 14,683 units. It isn’t an imposing number, considering its low starting price of 83,800 yuan (11,785 USD).

Baojun Yep Plus official images

The Baojun Yep Plus follows the design language of the three-door version. It has blackened pillars, a white roof, short overhangs, five-spoke gray rims, and blocky headlights. From the back, the Baojun Yep has a swing-out trunk door. The main feature of the Yep Plus is five doors. As a result, its wheelbase was elongated to 2560 mm from 2110 mm. The exact dimensions of the Baojun Yep Plus reach 2996/1760/1726 mm.

The Boajun Yep Plus was displayed in the official images without the screen on the car’s rear, which is available for a three-door model. Maybe the five-door version will get this variant later.
The Baojun Yep Plus will have a single electric motor in the rear axle for 75 kW (101 hp). Its battery capacity is unknown. However, Baojun mentioned that the CLTC range of the Yep Plus will reach 401 km. The top speed of this SUV will reach 150 km/h.

The Baojun Yep Plus will hit the Chinese market in Q1 2024. Its price tag has yet to be revealed. However, we think its price will be around 150,000 yuan (21,100 USD).
