On January 18th, BYD expanded its market footprint in Southeast Asia by launching three EV models in Indonesia: the Dolphin, Seal, and ATTO 3 (Yuan Plus). This move signifies a further step in BYD’s global expansion strategy.

In a significant development, Airlangga Hartarto, Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, announced at the launch event that BYD plans to invest $1.3 billion in building an automotive factory in Indonesia. This factory is expected to have an annual production capacity of 150,000 units. This investment marks BYD’s fifth overseas EV factory, following their establishments in Thailand, Uzbekistan, Brazil, and Hungary.
Eagle Zhao, President of BYD Indonesia, stated that the company plans to commence construction of these facilities later this year. BYD aims to establish up to 50 sales outlets across Indonesia by the end of 2024.

The Yuan Plus, one of the models introduced, is BYD’s first electric SUV built on the e-platform 3.0. It features a low drag coefficient of 0.29 and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Under the WLTP standard, its maximum range reaches up to 420 km.

Indonesia has been actively trying to attract EV manufacturers with various incentive measures. The country’s Minister of Industry indicated that the government is considering eliminating import tariffs and value-added tax for businesses investing in local EV factories. “We are optimistic that, if implemented, this will stimulate investment and increase the demand for electric vehicles,” he stated.

Earlier comments from Indonesian officials

Last year, Indonesia’s Minister for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources mentioned that the government was formulating incentive measures for domestic EV manufacturers, hoping to attract major companies like BYD and Tesla.

As early as July 2023, Indonesia’s Investment Minister, Bahlil Lahadalia, announced that EV manufacturers, including BYD, Wuling Motors, and others, would establish factories in Indonesia. He also revealed that the government contemplated additional tax incentives to attract EV manufacturers.
“Thank God, we have decided to accelerate the investment in electric vehicles. The situation now is that Hyundai, which is already operational, will be joined by BYD, Wuling, and several other automakers in Indonesia,” Bahlil said.
To encourage this investment, the government is preparing a series of comprehensive measures from a regulatory and incentivization perspective, including tax reductions.
Bahlil mentioned that earlier discussions focused on how to compete with other countries, such as Thailand and Malaysia. “If we do not discuss this immediately, we will surely fall behind our neighbors,” he added.
Regarding incentives for purchasing EVs, Bahlil stated that the government would streamline some procedures to make it easier for people to acquire electric vehicles.

BMW is scheduled to release its latest 5 Series/i5 models in China on January 25th, introducing notable enhancements in design, technology, and performance. The upcoming launch will encompass ten models, with six dedicated to the extended wheelbase 5 Series and four to the i5, aiming to cater to the diverse preferences of Chinese consumers. This new model will also be released in the US and European markets early this year.

The 5 Series for the Chinese market is assembled domestically by the joint venture between BMW and Brilliance. This JV was founded in 2003 and started to assemble 3 Series and 5 Series. The BMW-Brilliance cooperation owns two plants in China with a planned production capacity of up to 650,000 units. BMW-Brilliance currently assembles nine models: 3 Series, i3, 5 Series, i5, iX1, X1, iX3, X3, and X5L.

Exterior

The design of the new BMW 5 Series showcases a dynamic aesthetic characterized by a kidney grille and “angel eyes” headlights with boomerang-shaped daytime running lights. Real-world images of the long-wheelbase version reveal its elongated profile, featuring classic kinks and chrome embellishments, along with a glowing ‘5’ badge.

In contrast, the rear design adopts a minimalist approach, incorporating horizontal lines in the taillights for a delicate visual effect. Silver accents in the rear bumper contribute to the overall sporty look. The dimensions of the new model measure 5175mm in length, 1900mm in width, and 1520mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3105mm.

Interior

The design follows the latest family-style approach, with a center console housing a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch central display. The flat-bottomed steering wheel offers a comfortable grip, while crystal-like interior components add a touch of sophistication. The long-wheelbase variant of the 5 Series extends the luxurious theme to the rear, featuring a 32:9 BMW floating screen with real-time connectivity, integration with platforms like iQiyi (entertainment), and access to the Huawei AppGallery.

For the domestically-produced long-wheelbase 5 Series petrol models, consumers can choose from six variants:

  • 525Li Luxury Package
  • 525Li M Sport Package
  • 530Li Flagship Model M Luxury Package
  • 530Li Flagship Model M Sport Package
  • 530Li Exclusive Model Luxury Package
  • 530Li Exclusive Model M Sport Package
Engine options range from a 2.0T low-power unit with 212 horsepower in the 525Li to a 2.0T high-power engine with 287 horsepower in the 530Li. All models are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The i5 Model

The long-wheelbase of the i5 electric variant introduces four models:
  • i5 eDrive35L Luxury Package
  • i5 eDrive35L M Sport Package
  • i5 eDrive35L Exclusive Model Luxury Package
  • i5 eDrive35L Exclusive Model M Sport Package
Featuring a rear-mounted single electric motor, the i5 boasts a maximum power output of 250kW (335hp) and an impressive CLTC (China’s standardized testing) driving cycle range of 567 kilometers. The standard wheelbase 5 Series and i5 will see the introduction of one imported model each, further diversifying the lineup.

Zeekr’s second MPV, codenamed CM2E, was spotted in the garage wearing a heavy camo. The all-electric minivan is developed with Waymo, a US-based self-driving project from Google.

Zeekr CM2E is based on Zeekr’s M-Vision concept, which was introduced in 2022 at the Guangzhou Auto Show. It was designed in Sweden and is dedicated to ride-hailing, featuring L4 autonomous driving, Zeekr announced then.
However, one little detail from the spy shot suggests Zeekr might change its mind. Unlike the M-Vision concept, the camouflaged EV has no lidar on the front windshield and is missing some cameras and sensors, pointing out that Zeekr might also be developing a cheaper version with fewer self-driving capabilities for private buyers.

The M-Vision concept was supposed to have rear and front electric sliding doors, and previous spy shots confirmed it. However, the model now has only a sliding rear door and a traditional front door, showing Zeekr is most likely experimenting with different setups for various markets and uses.
Zeekr CM2E is a small MPV that sits on Geely’s SEA-M platform, having a length of about 4.6 meters and five seats in a 2+3 layout. It might not seem like a long minivan, but don’t forget you don’t need a space for a driver in Waymo’s version as it is all dedicated to passenger space.
Based on spy shots of the pre-production version, Chinese fans from SugarDesign created renders of the production version Zeekr CM2E. Credit: SugarDesing
Zeekr hasn’t revealed specifications yet, but CarNewsChina expects it will feature 800V architecture like Zeekr’s latest model, the 007 sedan. The 007 powertrain options comprise a single motor version with 310 kW and an AWD version with 475 kW.

Zeekr M-Vision concept interior. Credit: Geely.
As confirmed by previous spy shots, the new EV will feature Zeekr’s Stargate light band, first adopted by Zeekr 007. It is a 90-inch element consisting of 1,711 lamps. It supports personal projections. According to Zeekr CEO An Conghui, they’ve spent over 1 billion yuan (USD 140 million) to develop this element.
Zeekr is a BEV brand founded three years ago under Geely. It sells four models: the Zeekr 009 MPV, the Zeekr 001 sedan, the Zeekr X compact SUV, and the Zeekr 007 sedan. It also produces a performance version of 001 called 001 FR. In 2023, Zeekr sold 118,685 cars, up 65% from 2022 but missing its target to double sales to 140,000 units. For 2024, Zeekr aims to deliver 230,000 vehicles.

Zeekr 001 FR entered Chinese market with 1,247 hp. Priced at 105,100 USD

The production version of CM2E will hit the market later in 2024 and join Waymo’s fleet in the US. Zeek didn’t confirm if their second MPV will be available in other markets for private buyers, but based on recent lidar-less spy shots, we expect it will be available in China and possibly in Europe. We will keep an eye on it.

On January 17th, Zhao Aimin, Deputy General Manager of SAIC International, announced that SAIC Group has set its overseas sales target 2024 at 1.35 million units, with a further goal of 1.5 million units in 2025. Zhao emphasized the group’s capacity to aim for higher targets but stressed the importance of steady progress.

SAIC plans to leverage the centenary of its MG brand to promote its global presence, focusing on sales-driven brand publicity. SAIC’s new energy vehicle (NEV) products are currently marketed as “global cars.” Over the next two years, SAIC is set to launch 14 new NEV models worldwide.
SAIC’s high-end brands, including IM and Feifan, are also poised for global expansion. These brands may adopt different presentation strategies in international markets.

Interior of IM LS7Interior of IM LS7
In 2023, SAIC Group sold 5.02 million vehicles, maintaining its position as China’s top automaker for the eighteenth consecutive year. Its overseas sales reached 1.208 million units, marking a record 18.8% year-on-year increase and leading the domestic industry for the eighth year.
IM LS7 chassis
This achievement sets the stage for an 11.75% increase in overseas sales for SAIC Group in 2024, building on its consecutive eight-year lead in domestic sales.
Regarding sales structure, in 2023, SAIC Group’s independent brand sales totaled 2.775 million units, accounting for over 55% of the total sales volume. This figure represents a 2.5% increase from 2022. The group also reported a 4.6% year-on-year growth in NEV sales, totaling 1.123 million units and ranking second among domestic automakers.

SAIC’s current overseas sales strategy mainly uses the acquired MG brand to expand overseas sales. It will use its joint venture with GM, SAIC-GM-Wuling, to develop emerging markets such as Southeast Asia. Later, independent brands such as Zhiji and Feifan will be promoted overseas.
At present, SAIC is still China’s largest automobile group, but nearly half of its sales come from joint venture brands. Its own brand sales are still less than BYD.

According to official sources, all Nio models are equipped with four Orin chips, boasting a computing power of 1016Tops. This comprehensive and advanced deployment of intelligent hardware ensures a continuous improvement in user experience.
Moreover, towards the end of January, the Nio Banyan system will receive an update encompassing more than 40 feature enhancements. This upgrade will enhance the performance and experience of intelligent chassis, cockpit, active safety, and full-domain assisted driving. For context, in 2023, Nio’s complete lineup of eight models achieved a sales volume of 160,000 units.

In other news, on the same day, Nio Automotive announced that they would further upgrade the intelligent hardware configuration of their existing models, with the new models scheduled to start delivery in early March 2024.
In 2023, Nio delivered over 160,000 units across its eight models, securing the top spot in the premium pure electric market segment priced above 300,000 yuan (41,800 USD).
Later this month, the new version of the Nio Banyan system is expected to undergo more than 40 functional upgrades, significantly improving the capabilities and user experience of intelligent chassis, cockpit, active safety, and full-domain assisted driving.

In 2024, Nio plans to upgrade the intelligent hardware configurations of its current models further, with the new models set to begin deliveries in early March. In celebration of the upcoming Chinese New Year, Nio offers short-term purchase benefits for the 2023 model range.

According to the first internal letter of 2024 released by Nio’s Chairman and CEO, Li Bin, Nio will focus on three “high-priority items” in 2024: ensuring long-term investment in core critical technologies to maintain the lead in technology and product delivery; enhancing sales and service capabilities to meet intense market competition; and providing the development of 9 core products across three brands progresses on schedule.
Per media reports, Nio currently plans three brands, with the Nio brand having already launched eight products. There are no new products slated for release this year under this brand. The second brand, internally codenamed “Alps,” is expected to introduce its first SUV model in the latter half of the year. The third brand, codenamed “Firefly,” aims to debut a small car akin to the BMW MINI in the European market by 2025.
In December 2023, Nio delivered 18,012 vehicles, a 13.9% increase year-over-year, totaling 160,038 deliveries, a 30.7% increase from the previous year. As of December 31, 2023, Nio has delivered 449,594 new cars.
By comparison, Li Auto delivered 50,353 new vehicles in December, a 137.1% increase year-over-year, and XPeng Motors produced 20,115 new cars, a 78% increase.
During Nio’s media face-to-face event in December 2023, Nio’s president, Qin Lihong, stated that investing in service stations and battery swapping is not a distraction. For Chinese automotive companies to establish premium brands, diverse efforts are necessary, even if it means incurring some learning costs. He reassured that Nio was not squandering investors’ money and was not an inefficient company.

The Lynk & Co 07 EM-P was shown in official spy shots. This sedan undergoes winter tests in Northern China. It follows the brand’s latest design language and offers a PHEV powertrain with over 400 kW. The Lynk & Co 07 EM-P will be officially presented in Q1 this year.

Lynk & Co has shared some official photos of the 07 EM-P sedan. It undergoes cold-weather tests in unknown locations. We may assume it is Inner Mongolia, the coldest Chinese region. In winter, temperatures here can drop below minus 40 degrees Celsius. The vast majority of Chinese car makers prefer to test their products here.

Lynk & Co official images

The Lynk & Co 07 EM-P is covered in camouflage in pictures. However, its overall exterior styling coincides with the earlier spy shots and the teaser image. The 07 EM-P follows the brand’s latest design language introduced by Lynk & Co The Next Day concept car. Its headlights are integrated into the front bumper, while the running lights sit beside the bonnet line.

The front end of the Lynk & Co 07 EM-p doesn’t have a conventional grille. Instead, it offers a large air intake. The new sedan equips sporty five-spoke rims, frameless side-view mirrors, and retractable door handles. From the back, the Lynk & Co 07 EM-P has a continuous taillight strip.
Unnoficial render images of the Lynk & Co 07 EM-P
Based on the released images, Chinese designer Sugar Design prepared some unofficial render images of the Lynk & Co 07 EM-P. He imagined this sedan with blackened pillars and a roof.

Additional info on Lynk & Co 07 EM-P

The Lynk & Co 07 EM-P stands on the CMA Evo platform designed especially for plug-in hybrid vehicles. The same architecture underpins the Lynk & Co 08 fastback SUV launched last year. It hints the 07 EM-P can adopt the same powertrain options. In this case, it will be available in three variants:

  • 1.5L ICE for 120 kW, e-motor for 160 kW, total power output of 280 kW, 21.2-kWh battery
  • 1.5L ICE for 120 kW, e-motor for 160 kW, total power output of 280 kW, 39.8 kWh battery
  • 1.5L ICE for 120 kW, two e-motors for 160 kW + 156 kW, total power output of 436 kW, 39.8 kWh battery
The Lynk & Co 07 EM-P will hit the production line in February this year, according to the brand’s leaked product planning. Lynk & Co is a joint project between Geely and Volvo (acquired by Geely in 2010). It was founded in 2016 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Inside China, Lynk & Co sells seven models manufactured at two plants.

Recently, JuneYao Auto (吉祥汽车) revealed the official images of its first model, JuneYao Air, in China. The new car is expected to be unveiled in the second quarter of 2024 with a price tag below 200,000 yuan (28,000 USD) and enter the market in 2025.

The JuneYao Air is designed based on “minimalistic aviation aesthetics” called Ultimate One-Box and sits on a full-stack self-developed pure electric platform, according to the brand. It it worth mentioning that JuneYao Auto emphasized the car is not an MPV.

From the side, the new car adopts a fastback shape, paired with hidden door handles, triangular windows at the A and C pillars, multi-spoke rims, and a layered rear. The wheelbase of the car could be 2800 mm. Furthermore, the rear is minimally embellished except with the popular through-type taillights and a ducktail spoiler.

The front part is decorated with irregular sharp LED headlights and a closed face, coupled with a trapezoidal grille at the bottom.
A panoramic sunroof is also not absent. The JuneYao Air will be available in six exterior colors, including Cloud White, Morning Glow Pink, Sky Blue, Earth Green, Sunrise Gold, and Dawn Black.

Judging from a leaked interior image, the cockpit has a small LCD instrument panel, a two-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, and a large suspended center control screen. The center console has two cupholders and a wireless charging pad.

About JuneYao Auto

In November 2023, JuneYao Group, the parent company of JuneYao Airlines, held a press conference on its aircraft to officially announce its new car brand “JuneYao Auto” and its “JuneYao Journey” strategy. The strategy includes launching a comprehensive travel solution based on JuneYao Auto’s first model, integrating with JuneYao Airlines to provide users with a one-stop travel experience such as airport pick-up and drop-off, airport parking, and destination car rental.
JuneYao Auto’s car manufacturing qualification comes from Yudo Auto, an EV brand that was launched in December 2015. Its Chinese name is Yundu (云度). In June 2022, Juneyao Group took over Yudo Auto and became the company’s largest shareholder. In 2023, Yudo Auto launched its compact pure electric SUV called Yuntu.

On January 28, Jetour launched a new Traveller model called Silver Dragon Wing (银龙之翼) under its JMK sub-brand, priced at 219,900 yuan (30,600 USD). This new model is limited to 3,000 units. As the first vehicle under the JMK sub-brand, the Silver Dragon Wing has been upgraded to varying degrees, making it more hard-core overall.

JMK stands for Jetour Makers Kingdom, which Jetour declared as its new sub-brand that focuses on custom-made vehicles with the concept of being “more fashionable, wilder, and more interesting”. JMK will adopt the make-to-order production model with an expected delivery time of less than three months. In the future, most new Jetour vehicles will have the corresponding JMK models, and the models will also be developed simultaneously during the research and development phase, according to the brand.

As the first model of JMK, the Traveller Silver Dragon Wing has undergone in-depth off-road modifications based on the Jetour Traveller. It is worth mentioning that the Jetour Traveller will also have a mountaineering, rainforest, and elite version in the future.

The dimensions are 4782/2036/1960 mm, with a 2800 mm wheelbase, an approach angle of 24°, and a departure angle of 28°.
From the side, the Traveller Silver Dragon Wing adds a multi-functional storage platform on the roof, a large number of thick blackened metal trim strips, two customized storage containers on each side in between the C and D pillars, and a foldable ladder. At the rear, new taillight covers made with resin material are present.
The rims and tires have also been upgraded to 20-inch rims and 255/55 R20 all-terrain off-road tires.

The cockpit maintains a T-shaped layout with a large central control screen at the center. The central control screen comes with a built-in Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip that supports OTA updates. The Silver Dragon Wing theme UI will be launched soon.
Power continues to come from a 2.0T engine model SQRF4J20 and is mated to a 7-speed DCT, with a maximum power of 187 kW and a peak torque of 390 Nm. The fuel consumption is 10.89 L per 100 km. At the same time, the new car is also equipped with an XWD fully automatic intelligent four-wheel drive system that can realize automatic rear-wheel torque distribution.
