Chinese premium electric vehicle manufacturer HiPhi may go bankrupt due to financial problems. In this respect reports carnewschina.com. Rumors about the unstable state of the company appeared at the beginning of 2024.
It was noted that the company postponed salary payments to its employees in January 2024, canceled bonuses based on business results in 2023, and reduced the salaries of its senior managers.
There were also rumors in January that HiPhi car production and research and development were suspended. In response to these reports, HiPhi representatives stated that the company continues its operations. BYD revealed last week that BYD Seagull, its cheapest car, will enter international markets as Dolphin Mini. The vehicle already hit the market in several South American nations – the deliveries in Uruguay started, and sales in Brazil will begin by the end of the month.

BYD Seagull is an all-electric 5-door hatchback launched in April last year for 73,800 – 89,800 yuan (10,200 – 12,500 USD) at the Shanghai Auto Show. Since then, it has become BYD’s best-seller, delivering 280,217 units in 2023 in China.
It has two options: the base model has a 30.08 kWh battery good for a 305 km CLTC range, and the top trim level has a 38.88 kWh LFP battery suitable for a 405 km CLTC range. Both variants have the same 55 kW (74 hp) motor in front with a peak torque of 135 Nm, providing a top speed of 135 km/h. The 0-50 km/h acceleration is in 4.9 seconds, and the 0-100km/h acceleration is yes.

The EV’s dimensions are (L/W/H) 3780/1715/1540 mm, respectively, and the wheelbase is 2500 mm. Seagull is a five-door, four-seater that drives on 165/65 R15 wheels.

BYD brought both battery variants (30 kWh and 38 kWh) of Seagull to Uruguay, named Dolphin Mini EV300 and Dolphin Mini EV400. The EV300 variant has a 300 km NEDC range and price of 21,990 USD, and the EV400 has a 380 km NEDC range for 23,990 USD. Interestingly, the Uruguay website still shows the old name of BYD Seagull, but the promotional pictures already feature the Dolphin Mini nameplate.

Brazilian media InsideevsBR also brought the information that BYD Dolphin Mini will be launched in the country by the end of February, and the testing cars have already hit local dealers as reviews of Dolphin Mini on Brazilian roads popped up. The Dolphin Mini will start at 99,800 reals (20,100 USD) for a smaller battery version and 114,800 reals (23,200 USD) for a bigger battery.

Only nine months after China’s launch, BYD Seagull arrived in overseas markets, which might be a new record for BYD. The Shenzhen-based automaker hasn’t yet announced if they plan a European launch, where their cheapest car is currently BYD Dolphin. We will keep an eye on it.

Some people are going to be burning their way home this Chinese New Year. Deliveries of the first Lynk & Co 03++ TCR Cyan models began around February 8 according to Geely.

We previously reported that sales began on October 19, 2023. Lynk & Co is best known for its SUV and crossover model with the 03 currently being the brand’s only sedan – although the new 07 will go on sale shortly. The standard 03 is available with 1.5T and 2.0T engines along with a PHEV using the 1.5T engine. A performance oriented 03+ launched in 2019 and used a performance boosted version of the 2.0T.
Chinese media seem to be referring to this new car as the Lynk & Co 03++ TCR Cyan although the car does clearly say 03+ on the back rather than with ++! Anyway whatever the name of the car it is meant to be the most powerful performance car ever produced in China.

So what power’s it? Well it’s still the 2.0 liter turbo but power is now up to 257 kW with torque of 450 Nm. Those figures are actually exactly the same as with the 03+ Racing 4WD edition but the new car is 420,200 yuan (USD58,400) versus just 285,700 yuan (USD39,700) for the former.
So if the engine is the same, what do you get for all that extra moolah? Well on paper you get less. Not only is this car only front wheel drive, but you also lose the back seats, although you can get a roll cage fitted in the back if you want. The top speed still seems to be capped at 250 km/h which is the same as even the base 03+ version. The Racing 4WD thanks to the uprated engine has an acceleration time of 4.9 seconds versus 5.7 for the regular 03+. Currently there is no official time for the new version but given it is FWD and 150 kg lighter it should be considerably quicker.
Appearance wise it has bigger air intakes plus a sportier front and huge spoiler at the back. Wing mirrors, wheels and door handles are all black. However, the car seems to lack the high-performance six-piston brake calipers previously announced.

While road legal the car is heavily based on the 03 TCR developed by Cyan Racing which has had considerable success in the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR). As such it is only available in the same blue color as used by the race team and features FIA-certified racing style bucket seats.
Performance cars in China got a kickstart when FAW Volkswagen began producing the sixth generation Golf GTI in 2010, such cars are still though a rarity.

More spy pictures are emerging of the as yet unnamed BYD pickup truck. Most importantly there are pictures indicating that right-hand drive models are already being tested. This means that it will almost certainly be heading to the Australian market and possibly the South African market soon.

Chinese media has been keen on talking about the RHD version of this car being spied but as you will see none of the pictures clearly show the steering wheel on the right. However, if you look at the windscreen wipers, on the near head on spy shot, these appear to be positioned for a car driven from a seat on the right.

BYD has been working on a pickup for several years. I even spied test mules when visiting the factory in November 2022. Patent pictures appeared back in October 2023 and so with the increasing number of spy shots a launch should not be far off with deliveries likely this year. Chinese media claim sales will begin in Australia in the second half of 2024.

Interior shots show a large floating center screen and the center console layout is largely carried over from the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 (Leopard 5). This may indicate the pickup is closely related to the FCB Bao 5. The truck will likely feature a head up display and there is speculation that this will be an augmented reality unit from Huawei.

So far there is no definite news on drivetrain but it is expected to be available as both a PHEV and all-electric. Some Chinese sources claim the pickup might gain hydraulic active suspension but this is probably unlikely with it more likely having the DiSus-C rather than DiSus-P as the later system is for BYD’s more high-end models.
The truck has a rugged square look about it with vertical double LED headlights and C-shaped daytime running lights. It will come as a dual-cab five seater.

If the Chinese reports are correct Australians should get an electric ute from BYD soon and we expect a South African bakkie to be not far behind.

Last year BYD’s Yangwang U9 sports car danced its way on stage and took the automotive Internet by storm but with the U9 set to bounce its way to us with its official launch on February 25, what’s the story with the suspension?

It’s official name is the BYD DiSus Intelligent Body Control System (DiSus System) and it was launched at an event last April which also gave us a preview of the Yangwang U9. The Chinese name of the system is Yunnian which is difficult to translate but is connected to the words cloud and the carriages that the emperors used to ride so perhaps can be seen to be something akin to a cloud like ride. While we’re not sure exactly what the English name means we believe the Sus part is from suspension and the Di is likely the ‘D’ from BYD. The letter D is very much in the names of BYD elements and so the voice control system is known as Xiao Di (little D) and the current self-driving system is DiPilot.
With the full stack self-developed system BYD becomes the first Chinese automobile manufacturer to own the intelligent vehicle body control technology throughout. The system was especially developed for new energy vehicles, BYD stopped selling pure ICE cars in 2022. BYD says the system significantly improves the driving experience. The system is currently being rolled out across the different BYD brands. Certainly higher level versions of the systems use the car’s on board sensors such as LiDAR to scan the road ahead to allow the suspension to adjust itself. DiSus comes in 4 known versions, the fourth being the DiSus-X which will debut on the Yangwang U9.

DiSus-C is an Intelligent Damping Body Control System and is the most basic of the versions similar to CDC variable damping shock absorbers with electronic control valves adjusting the damping of the shock absorber. What’s interesting is that some Han, Tang and Denza models gained the ability via an OTA thanks to already having the necessary hardware. Going forward most BYD cars are likely to have this technology.

Moving up Intelligent Air Body Control System (DiSus-A) is the next level of the system. Obviously this is dependent on the model having air suspension and the system enables the vehicle to adjust its height and presumably each wheel according to the road conditions. Vehicle height is adjustable by up to 150 mm with the system. The first car to get DiSus-A was the Denza N7.

The YangWang U8, BYD’s G-wagon competitor, was the first to feature the DiSus-P Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System, and this is currently the most advanced version of the system available. If you’re wondering how the YangWang U8 can do those incredible tank turns, well it’s because of this system. What it also gives the car is an amazing off-road ability thanks to it being possible to raise or lower the suspension by 200 mm and a hydraulic spring assembly for each wheel allows it to react to the road surface.

And then there is DiSus-X with the X possibly standing for extreme. This will have performance that exceeds all other levels of the DiSus system and one thing we know is that it allows the YangWang U9 to drive with only three wheels. It is also what allows the car to dance. More details will likely emerge when the YangWang U9 launches on February 25.

BYD is exploring establishing an EV factory in Mexico to enhance its supply chain efficiency and reduce export costs to the North American market.

Zhou Zou, the head of BYD Mexico, highlighted the strategic significance of overseas manufacturing and identified Mexico as a critical market with substantial potential during an interview on February 14.
This initiative aligns with BYD’s strategy to create export hubs in Mexico that could serve the United States and other international markets. Under the agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada, at least 75% of auto parts must be manufactured in one of the three regions to benefit from potential tariff benefits.

Furthermore, the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act imposes specific assembly location requirements and stringent criteria for battery sourcing to be eligible for a 7,500 USD tax credit.
Mexico has emerged as an attractive destination for EV manufacturing, with several major automakers, including Kia, BMW, and Stellantis, announcing their plans to produce electric vehicles in the country. Tesla also revealed its intention to build a gigafactory in Nuevo León state.

Considering a new EV factory in Mexico is part of BYD’s global expansion strategy, which already includes overseas EV factories in Thailand, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Hungary, and Indonesia.
BYD wants to implement a dual-core strategy in the North American and Latin American markets. We regard Mexico as the core of the North American market and plan to improve the supply chain and establish factories in Mexico. In addition, it acquired a Ford Motor plant in Brazil to supply the Brazilian local market and other Latin American regions.

Brutal competition in China’s new energy vehicle market shows no signs of abating. Yesterday saw a discount of 10,000 yuan (1,400 USD) on the price of the Deepal S7 meaning prices now start from 169,900 yuan (23,600 USD).

Deepal was originally referred to as Shenlan in English before gaining an official English name. The brand is majority owned by Changan and currently sells new energy cars in China and Thailand. Other owners of the brand include CATL and Huawei and the car’s Deepal OS is built on the Harmony OS from Huawei.

The S7 is the brand’s second model and first SUV. Designed at the Changan Turin studio sales began last year and it is available in all electric and extended range (EREV) guises, a hydrogen fuel cell version will allegedly launch in the future. It has a length, width and height of 4750 mm, 1930 mm, 1625 mm respectively and a wheelbase of 2900 mm.

After the reduction, the price range of the pure electric version is 169,900-192,900 yuan (23,600-26,800 USD). Customers have a choice between either the cash discount or a 6,000 yuan (830 USD) discount and another 6,000 toward options.
Other incentives include free lifetime data for car usage (13 GB/month) and two years of free entertainment data (10 GB/month).
The EV system and range extension system come with a lifetime warranty and there is a free home charger including installation.

For the first 999 purchases there is a choice of six years free basic maintenance or heat insulation film worth 2,399 yuan. They will also receive 10 years of gold card rights which allows them an annual examination of the car.
EREV versions come with a 175 kW electric motor on the rear wheels and a 1.5 litre engine. Combined range is 1040 km or 1120 km for the 19 kWh and 31.7 kWh batteries respectively. For the full EV there are 160 kW, and 190 kW versions with a range of 520 or 620 km dependent on battery size.

Range however has also been in the news recently due to one owner of an EREV version claiming in a video that his car only achieved 24.77 L/100km or even 30 L/100km. Analysis however revealed very abnormal usage.
Firstly the data covered usage between 13:36 on December 22 until 22:26 on December 31. During that period a total of 20 trips were made with each of 7-8 km for a total of 151.5 km. Furthermore although the car was used for 18.44 hours only 6.1 hours was actually driving time while the remainder the car was used in-situ.
The original post has since been deleted and even Deepal CEO, Deng Chenghao, has personally responded to refute the story.

The Wuling Bingo‘s price was cut by 10% as the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture craves a sales boost. The discount is dedicated to the Chinese New Year and will end on March 31. The price of some trim levels has dropped by 8,000 yuan (1,125 USD).

Wuling Bingo was launched in March last year by the well-known SGMW, the Hongguang Mini EV hip city car manufacturer. It is a small hatchback that aims to rival the BYD Seagull. Bingo gained momentum at the end of the last year, selling over 20,000 units monthly. Still, this promising hatchback lagged behind the BYD Seagull, which sells around 40,000 cars each month. So, the SGMW joint venture wants to seize the advantage by offering discounts.

The price dip affected four trim levels of the Wuling Bingo: Enjoy 333km, Enjoy+ 333km, Lingxi Internet+ 333km, and Lingxi Exclusive 410km. The price reduction is 5,000 – 8,000 yuan (700 – 1,125 USD), depending on the trim level. We have made a list of trim levels with the final cost.

  • Wuling Bingo Enjoy 333km – 68,800 yuan (9,660 USD)
  • Wuling Bingo Enjoy+ 33km – 72,800 yuan (10,220 USD)
  • Wuling Bingo Lingxi Internet+ – 76,800 yuan (10,780 USD)
  • Wuling Bingo Lingxi Exclusive 410km – 83,800 yuan (11,765 USD)
It is worth noting that entry variants of this hatchback with a 203 km range remained the same. They are priced at 59,800 yuan (8,400 USD) and 65,800 yuan (9,240 USD). Aside from the price reduction, those who place an order for the Bingo during the validity period will get a free 3.5 kW charging pile, a lifetime warranty for the first owner, and a financial interest discount.

So, Wuling eagerly wants to keep the sales volume of the Bingo high as the competition in the Chinese EV market has no signs of abating.
