IM Motors will launch the revised model of IM L7 on February 24. Display models have started arriving at dealerships. This model has undergone subtle exterior adjustments of an increase of 10 mm in body length.

The new IM L7 adopts the Nvidia Orin X chip, which leads to an increase of computational power by nearly eightfold. The two front surround-view cameras have seen an increase in pixel count from 5 million to 8 million, coupled with the addition of a laser radar, enabling the IM L7 with Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) capability. The IM Intelligent Driving NOA system is currently available across Mainland China. It has been deployed in major urban areas of Shanghai. Expansion of the IM Intelligent Driving NOA system for the entire nation is planned for this year.

In terms of interior aesthetics, the updated L7 adopts a design of the LS6, featuring a narrow border continuous screen. It also features such as leather seats, a 22-speaker entertainment system, and dual-layer soundproof glass will be offered. The leather-wrapped center console incorporates 50W wireless charging. Window controls have reverted to physical buttons. Both front and rear seats are equipped with electric leg support. The rear seats have increased by 30 mm, now providing over 1 meter of rear legroom. Not only do the rear seats now recline at 10° (electronically adjusted) but they are also ventilated with shoulder and lumbar massage functions.

The new L7 continues to operate on 400V with three power options. The single-motor version offers 231 kW. The mid-spec version offers 250 kW. Both models can travel at a maximum speed of 200 km/h. The top-spec four-wheel-drive version features one permanent magnet synchronous motor on each front and rear axle, boasting a total peak power of 425 kW which weighs 2290 kg. According to the manufacturer, the new car offers a choice between a 71.2 kWh or 90 kWh lithium battery pack. Driving range under standard conditions ranging from 570 km to 708 km.

IM Motors Technology Co., Ltd. was officially registered on December 25, 2020, with a registered capital of 10 billion RMB. It is the collaboration of SAIC Motor Corporation Group, Zhangjiang High-Tech Park, and Alibaba Group which is aimed at rivaling the likes of Tesla.
In December, IM Motors’ monthly sales surpassed 10,000 units for the first time. The cumulative sales for 2023 reached 38,253 units, reflecting a remarkable year-over-year growth of 665%. And still, it is far behind its main rivals. Tesla sold over 645,000 units in China in 2023; Xpeng delivered over 121,000 cars; and Nio sold over 160,000 EVs.

Li Auto has just issued a teaser picture of the forthcoming L6 with a timely Year of the Dragon New Year’s theme. The official launch of this car is scheduled for April this year. The L6 aims to become the brand’s bestseller.

The Li Auto L6 will launch in April and will be the most mass-market oriented Li model yet with prices expected in the 200,000-300,000 yuan (27,800-41,700 USD) price bracket. The sales target is 30,000 a month. Li Auto in 2023 delivered 376,030 cars and has a target of 800,000 for this year and so the L6 will make up a significant proportion of the number.

Currently, Li Auto sells the L7, L8 and L9 SUVs which are all range extended models (EREV) and the L6 will join these. Also launching this year is the Li Mega the brand’s first all-electric model and an MPV in a break from the SUV only lineup which has served the brand so well.

Li with its L lineup of SUVs has taken an iPhone type approach meaning that there are core features and a look across the range with only the sizes differing.

The L6 is positioned as a luxury five-seat SUV whereas the L7 is the brand’s flagship five seater. While the L6 is still quite big it is smaller than the L7. Riding on a 2920 mm wheelbase it has a length, width and height of 4925 mm 1960 mm and 1735 mm respectively. In contrast the L7 is 5050 mm 1995 mm and 1750 mm while the wheelbase is 3005 mm.
As well as a Pro and Max version there will be a cheaper Air version. Lower priced versions will not be equipped with Lidar. Visually, the car will be very much like a scaled down L7 with only minor differences. The interior is also expected to be similar to the L7.

A 1.5T engine with 113 KW maximum power will act as a generator for range extension. Drive will come from dual electric motors. At launch it will come with a lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by either CATL or Sunwoda. Later, a nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) ternary lithium battery will be available.

BorgWarner Inc. has announced a strategic agreement with FinDreams Battery, a subsidiary of BYD Company Limited, to manufacture lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs for commercial vehicles.

As part of the deal, BYD will supply blade cells to BorgWarner, which will use them to manufacture batteries in Europe and the Americas. The duration of the agreement is eight years.
BorgWarner will also get intellectual property rights to use FinDreams’s battery pack design and manufacturing process as part of the agreement.

BorgWarner is a US-based tier 1 automotive supplier listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and among its customers are GM, Ford, and Stellantis. The company is also very active in China recently. It operates 11 manufacturing facilities, and last week, it announced the start of the production of electric motors for Xpeng X9 MPV. They also revealed the same e-motor will be used in Xpeng’s new mysterious B-class sedan, which will begin production in Q3 2024.
Moreover, on February 8, BorgWarner clinched a deal with a leading Chinese OEM to provide its dual inverter with a boost function for the automaker’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric range-extended vehicle (EREV) platforms. Although BorgWarner didn’t mention who the Chinese OEM is, according to CarNewsChina information, it is Great Wall Motor (GWM). The GWM prepares to launch Poer Hi4-T powered EREV pick-up soon in addition to the BEV and PHEV variants.
BorgWarner is also a supplier of electric drive modules (eDM) to Aiways and Ford’s Chinese joint venture with JMC.

The agreement with BYD, spanning eight years, establishes BorgWarner as “the only non-OEM manufacturer,” unaffiliated with FinDreams Battery, with the rights to localize LFP battery packs in Europe, the Americas, and select regions of Asia Pacific for commercial vehicles in class 3 and above, according to a press release.
Non-OEM means that Borwarg is the only automotive supplier with those licensing rights. However, there could be an auto manufacturer with the same license, hinting that more BYD deals might be announced soon.
Frédéric Lissalde, President and CEO of BorgWarner, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the growing global demand for LFP battery packs due to their cost competitiveness. He praised FinDreams Battery’s 20-plus years of experience and success in LFP batteries for mobility sectors in China and Europe, emphasizing the synergies between the two companies in advancing cell and battery pack technology for commercial vehicles.
Micheal He, President and CEO of FinDreams Battery, emphasized the strategic importance of collaboration amidst complex geopolitical dynamics and the increasing adoption of LFP electrification for overseas commercial vehicles. He highlighted the partnership’s ability to provide diverse and flexible options for overseas customers, contributing to the rapid electrification of the commercial vehicle market.

Editor’s comment

Many EV makers are now turning to LFP chemistry over NMC ternary. And LFP is BYD’s world. The cells have a lower energy density than NMC but are cheaper and don’t need precious metals such as Nickel, Mangan, or Cobalt, whose mining process is often controversial. Even Tesla switched to using BYD’s LFP batteries for some of its models not only in China but also in Europe, so it’s no wonder BorgWarner is jumping on the bandwagon.
Although the US is trying to develop the independence of its EV supply chains on Chinese battery makers, it is proving not as easy. For example, Ford announced the LFP battery plant in Michigan, which was promoted as a showcase of the US EV maker’s ability to be self-sufficient. Later, it was revealed the plant will use CATL’s cells and know-how.
Furthermore, BYD doesn’t wait for expansion. It is building an EV factory in Europe, Hungary and is considering a new EV plant in Mexico to tap the US market. We expect more automakers will ink a battery deal with BYD in the next two years and will keep an eye on it.

Spy shot and more details of the Neta L have emerged from the Neta Strategic Partner Conference held last month.

A brand from Hozon Auto founded in 2014 sales launched in 2019 and currently the brand has four models on the market. These consist of two relatively small crossover SUV type cars which were the first models and could be seen as the company’s first generation vehicles: Neta X (previously known as Neta U) and Neta Aya (previously Neta V). Then there are the two newer and larger cars the Neta S sports sedan which launched in 2022 and the related Neta GT coupe which followed in 2023. The Neta S comes in both all-electric and range extended versions (EREV) while all other models are BEV only.
Sized to compete with cars such as the Tesla Model Y and BYD Song Plus (Seal U) the Neta L will come in all-electric and EREV versions. With the car being on display at the strategic partner event last month the launch is likely imminent.

Dimensions of the Neta L SUV are 4770/1900/1660 mm with a wheelbase of 2810 mm. A five seater it will be available with 18 and 19 inch wheels.
The spy shots show a lot more details of the interior which Neta refers to as “A Comfortable Living Space” the company going on to define this as “combining advanced technology with a comfortable and spacious interior design, premium entertainment, and an impressive driving experience.”

Notable features include the dual screens providing entertainment to occupants. There’s also sofa like seating and it seems that the backs of the front seat have airline style drop down trays for the rear passengers. There is also a built in fridge in the center console between the front two seats.

Both the EV and EREV versions are powered by a 170 kW motor most likely on the rear axle. The EREV gains a 67 kW 1.5 liter engine supplied by Dongfeng to act as a generator. Currently the car has only been announced with lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by Great Wall Motor subsidiary SVOLT. Car News China expects prices to be around 150,000 – 250,000 yuan (21,000 – 35,000 USD).
Both the S and GT models upped Neta’s game and it seems that the Neta L will further the brands move from the very basic nature of the original two models when launched. Neta sold 127,496 cars in 2023. The L is the first SUV on Neta’s Shanhai 1.0 platform as used by the GT and S.
While little known outside China, the brand is quite fast growing. Next year will see the launch of the first model on the new Shanhai 2.0 platform. And in December production started at Neta’s Thailand factory with the brand currently selling to various Southeast Asian markets as well as China. Neta is certainly a brand to watch and may be the target of a Stellantis like grab of Leap.
