The high-end Chinese EV maker HiPhi halted production in its sole facility in Yancheng, north of Shanghai. The local media reported that the production shutdown was only temporary, for six months. The company also confirmed rumors that January salaries will be postponed until the end of February.

CarNewsChina obtained the internal memo sent to company employees, confirming outlet Jiemian’s information. The announcement further states that factory entry is forbidden, and the payment date for salaries for February 1 – 18 is yet to be determined. The employees who remain with the company between February 18 and March 18 will receive a 70% salary. After March 18, all employees will receive only a minimum wage salary following the regional minimum guarantee.
“If you are anxious to pay social security, you need to resign before February 25 and pay social security by yourself because you can’t pay social security while working,” the Human Horizons internal message to employees ends.

HiPhi internal memo to employees on WeChat. Translation: Starting from February 18th (today), the company will fully enter the shutdown stage of production, and the time will be determined to be six months. Factory entry is not allowed. January salary will be paid at the end of February. The wages for Feb 1-18: the payment date will be determined. Feb 18 – Mar 18 is the basic salary, 70% of the employee’s salary. After March 18, basic living expenses are paid according to the regional minimum guarantee. Suppose you are anxious to pay social security. In that case, you must complete the resignation procedures before 2.25 and pay social security yourself because you cannot pay social security yourself while working.
HiPhi is a premium brand owned by EV maker Human Horizons. The company was famous for selling quirky EVs with futuristic designs and sound tech. For example, its latest spaceship-shaped sedan, HiPhi Z, was first among 23 EVs participating in Norwegian extreme cold testing, achieving a 522 km range, beating all its rivals, including Tesla Model 3, BMW i5, Nio ET5T, Mercedes EQE, and Kia EV9.
Human Horizons doesn’t manufacture the cars by itself but instead uses a Nio-like contract manufacturing approach. Kia contract manufactures HiPhi cars in its Yancheng plant. The facility was formerly known as Dongfeng Yueda Kia’s First Plant and suspended production at the end of June 2019. It was responsible for Kia Sportage, Soul, and Cerato. The first contract-manufactured car, HiPhi X, rolled off the production line in November 2021.
The production capacity of the Yancheng plant is 150,000 vehicles/year. The Hiphi sells three cars (X, Y, Z), and their sales in previous years were:

  • 2021: 4,237 EVs
  • 2022: 4,349 EVs
  • 2023: 4,829 EVs
Most vehicles sold in 2023 were HiPhi Y, the entry-level SUV, which accounted for 4,17 cars. The Y is HiPhi’s cheapest EV, starting at 339,000 yuan (47,150 USD). The HiPhi X and Z had prices starting at over 600,000 yuan (83,400 USD) upon launch, which might seem not so high for EU/US buyers, but in China, where you can buy an all-electric AWD sedan with over 550 hp for 30,000 USD, that is a pretty expensive segment.
In January, HiPhi confirmed that wages for the first month of the year would be upheld until the end of February, all year-end bonuses would be canceled, and all salaries would be reduced. The company also denied that all employees were sent to their homes without the company laptops and other equipment, saying that only some employees decided to leave earlier for Chinese New Year.
On February 12, CarNewsChina reported that Hiphi closed its stores in Chengdu and Guangzhou. HiPhi is also one of China’s EV makers that expanded to Europe, selling EVs in Norway and teasing them in Germany.
As the China price war continues through 2024, we will see more EV makers sign wheels as among 97 EV makers selling current cars in China, only those with pockets deep enough can continue selling cars at nearly the loss through all possible or impossible channels, like shopping malls, smartphone stores or former legacy automakers showrooms. We will keep an eye on it.

On February 19th, Chinese automaker BYD officially launched the Honor Edition of its compact sedan, the Destroyer 05. The last update to the Destroyer 05 came in August last year and was previously announced in April last year as well. The original Destroyer 05 was launched in 2021. On this latest update, six different configurations are available, and the prices of the new models range from an impressive 79,800 yuan (11,000 USD) to 128,800 yuan (17,900 USD). The updated version offers two options for pure electric range: 55km and 120km (based on NEDC standards).

Along with the release, BYD has prepared multiple purchasing benefits for first-time young buyers, including a “2-year interest-free” plan and “free OTA system upgrades,” aiming to maximize cost savings for young families venturing into the electric vehicle market.
In terms of design, the new model maintains the polygonal grille shape seen in previous editions. The interior features dotted elements, complemented by the brand-new BYD logo and large vertical air intakes on both sides, giving the vehicle a sporty appearance. Additionally, the Destroyer 05 will offer a new body color option called “Inkstone Blue,” enhancing its overall sophistication.

The body profile presents smooth lines and slightly protruding front and rear fenders, creating a visually wider stance. At the rear, the vehicle has a clean design, accentuated by the integrated taillights and the “Build Your Dream” emblem positioned above them. The car’s dimensions measure 4,780mm in length, 1,837 mm in width, and 1,495 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,718 mm.
Moving to the interior, the new model comes equipped with standard features such as rear air conditioning vents, one-touch start, power-adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, automatic air conditioning, a 12.8-inch adaptive rotating floating pad, DiLink intelligent connectivity system, and a full-scene digital key.

Regarding the powertrain, the Honor Edition will be equipped with BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system, consisting of a 1.5L engine and a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The engine delivers a maximum power output of 81 kW and a torque of 135 Nm. The electric motor offers two power options: 132 kW with a maximum torque of 316 Nm or 145 kW with a maximum torque of 325 Nm, depending on the chosen variant. The vehicle will have LFP battery, providing a pure electric range of 55km or 120km according to NEDC standards.

With the introduction of the Honor Edition of the Destroyer 05, BYD continues to aim to attract a younger demographic by offering an appealing design, competitive pricing, and enhanced purchasing benefits.

BYD announced that its best-selling hatchback, BYD Dolphin, will launch the annual update on February 23 called Honor Edition. It will have a bigger battery and, according to local media, will have a cheaper entry-level variant than the previous 2023 version.

BYD recently declared a price war against ICE cars, launching 2024 updates of its PHEV models with prices lower than ICE alternatives, trying to persuade traditional ICE buyers to opt for plug-in hybrid vehicles. Shenzhen-based automaker stated that “79,800 yuan (11,000 USD) for BYD makes fuel cars panicking”, referring to the launch of the 2024 annual updates of two models: BYD Qin Plus Honor Edition and Destroyer 05 Honor Edition.
BYD is most likely targeting the affordable ICE best sellers such as Volkswagen Lavida or Toyota Corrola. BYD ceased production of ICE cars in April 2022.

2024 BYD Dolphin Honor Edition.
The new Dolphin demonstrates that BYD is not only preparing for 2024 with its PHEV models but also positioning its all-electric lineup at the forefront of the price war as the company expects the EV penetration to rise to a new level this year.
BYD’s founder Wang Chuanfu said during its New Year speech that he expects electric vehicle share to reach 50% in China in at last of the months of 2024. China’s monthly electric vehicle sales surpassed 40% market penetration the previous year.

The previous version of BYD Dolphin had only a 45 kWh LFP battery option, suitable for a 420 km CLTC range. The 2024 update will add trim with a 60 kWh battery and 520 km range. Finally, Chinese consumers can drive a bigger battery Dolphin, like European and other overseas customers.

The motor remains the same, with 70 kW of power and 180 Nm peak torque. Dimensions are also the same, (L/W/H) 4125/1770/1570 mm and a wheelbase of 2700 mm.

Inside the car, BYD prepared several changes. The vehicle will feature a new type-C charging port and a 50 W wireless charging pad. The seats were also upgraded, adding front seat ventilation. It also adds rear privacy glass. More information will be released on February 23.
Well-informed Chinese media Autohome claimed that the new Dolphin would come at a lower price than the 2023 version as BYD fired the first shots in the 2024 EV price war. The current version of Dolphin starts at 104,800 yuan (14,500 USD) in China. However, BYD is not the first to announce new year price cuts, as Deepal and Wuling already discounted their vehicles last weekend.

The Nio ET9 started road tests in China. It is the brand’s flagship model, which will launch in early 2025 with nearly 700 hp, 120 kWh battery, and a price tag of 800,000 yuan (~110K USD). Earlier, Nio shared a video of ET9 during winter tests.

Basics on Nio ET9

Nio ET9 is a large electric liftback with dimensions of 5323/2016/1620 mm and a wheelbase of 3250 mm. Its exterior styling follows the design language of other Nio models. It has thin DRLs, headlights integrated into the front bumper, a closed grille, and retractable door handles.

The interior of the Nio ET9 offers four seats and four large monitors. The second-row seats can be reclined up to 45 degrees. Nio ET9 has a Sky Ride chassis system with drive-by-wire and rear-wheel steering technology. This car also has a hydraulic suspension.

The powertrain of the Nio ET9 comprises two electric motors with a combined power of 520 kW. A 120 kWh battery pack powers these e-motors. It can charge 255 km in 5 minutes, thanks to the 5C charging tech. Moreover, this battery is also compatible with Nio’s battery swap stations (PSS). The price tag of the Nio ET9 will start around 800,000 yuan (110K USD). The deliveries are scheduled for 2025.

Nio ET9 road tests

On February 19, Nio ET9 was spied in the wild in China, covered with camouflage. Its exterior design aligns with the preproduction model shown last year. It has a sizeable trapeze-shaped air intake, black rims, a LiDAR & two cameras on the roof, and retractable door handles. The spotted car also has conventional side-view mirrors.

There are LiDAR sensors in the front fenders of the ET9. From the back, the Nio ET9 has a large active spoiler and a continuous taillight strip. We can also notice that the spotted model lacks a shark fin antenna on the roof.

Yesterday, Nio shared a video of Nio ET9 winter tests. Aside from enhancing the driver’s and passengers’ comfort, it can shake the snow off its body and lower suspension to minus 50 mm, allowing passengers to get in and out of the car easily.

In the countdown to the February 25 launch of the new YangWang U9 supercar from BYD more pictures of the interior have emerged on Weibo – China’s Twitter (or should that be X?) equivalent.

What’s also noteworthy about the post is the comment which translates as “The price is over one million, this central control screen and the front screen of the passenger look really cheap! How many units do you think it can sell per month?” The replies to the post are generally equally quite negative.

Let us know in the comments what you think of the interior.

The U9 is the second model in BYD’s high end YangWang brand following on from the U8 hard-core SUV. A third model, the U7 sedan, will likely launch later this year and is set to be the most aerodynamic production car in the world.
Strangely seeing as both BYD is based in Shenzhen and the U9 will be built in a factory there, the company has chosen Shanghai as the location of the launch on February 25. The price should be announced at the event but it currently expected to be north of a million yuan.
YangWang is BYD most technologically advanced brand of cars and the U9 will feature the DiSus-X suspension system. Details about it are currently thin on the ground but we know that it should outperform all other versions of Disus and it is what enables the car to drive on three wheels and of course it helps with those all important dance moves.

Each wheel gains a 240 kW electric motor for total output of 960 kW (1,287 hp). This is an all out supercar and so the top speed is capped at a much higher level than most EVs at 300 km/h. Acceleration is reportedly under two seconds.
The U9’s dimensions are 4966/2029/1295 mm, and its wheelbase is 2900 mm. Weight comes in at a fairly hefty 2,475 kg. Power of course still comes from BYD’s Blade battery.

That carbon fiber spoiler on the back is actually an optional extra. Also according to the U9 launch poster the car is actually also known as the Ultimat9.

Editor’s note:

While the interior of the car seems very stereotypical of a supercar it also just looks like one from an ICE with a couple of extra screens. Nothing really seems to give the U9 its own identity. At least with say the HiPhi Z it has a dancing screen but then again the whole U9 can dance!

Great Wall Motor is preparing to introduce the Tank 700 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV to the Chinese market on February 26th. The run-up to hitting the market started last year when the Tank 700 appeared at the Guangzhou auto show. After the detailed specs were revealed in December, presale began on Jan 30 for the vehicle with a price of 500,000 yuan (69,700 USD).

The Tank brand, launched by Great Wall Motor in 2021, already includes three models: Tank 300, Tank 400 Hi4-T, and Tank 500. The Tank 700 Hi4-T will be the brand’s third PHEV model but the first to feature a 3-liter V6 engine, unlike its predecessors that use a 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine. The Tank 700 will also be available as an ICE vehicle, as this version was revealed by the Chinese regulator last year.

Under the hood, the Tank 700 Hi4-T has a 3-liter V6 engine that produces 360 horsepower. It is paired with an electric motor and a 9HAT transmission, resulting in a combined power output of 517 horsepower. The SUV features a ternary (NMC) battery manufactured by SVOLT, a subsidiary of Great Wall Motors, providing an electric range of up to 100 kilometers in NEDC conditions.

In terms of design, the Tank 700 Hi4-T showcases the unique styling of the Tank brand. Its front fascia incorporates a layered design with a chrome grille, prominent headlights, and distinctive elements such as exposed winches and golden fog lamps. The SUV’s dimensions measure 5096/2060/1952 mm, making it the largest model in the Tank lineup. It possesses a rugged appearance with large wheel arches and high ground clearance.

Inside the Tank 700 Hi4-T, you’ll find a luxurious interior. The cabin features dual large-size floating LCD screens, a heads-up display (HUD), and premium elements such as a full suede leather roof. Additionally, it offers a Harman Kardon audio system and a panoramic starry sky ceiling to enhance the driving experience.
The introduction of the Tank 700 Hi4-T is anticipated to impact the luxury segment of the Chinese automotive market. Its combination of luxurious design, a powerful hybrid powertrain, and advanced features positions it as a noteworthy contender among the heating up Chinese luxury automotive market.

The BYD Tang DM-i mid-size crossover gets a facelifted variant in China. Its exterior styling is similar to the DM-p 4WD trim level. So, Chinese customers will be able to get an entry-level car with the appearance of a performance model.

BYD Tang is one of the oldest BYD families in the Chinese market. Its first generation was launched back in 2014. The second-generation BYD Tang entered the market in 2018 with electric and plug-in hybrid variants. In six years, it got several facelifts. Now, its DM-i PHEV variant gets another update that will probably boost the Tang series sales volume.

BYD Tang DM-i facelift

Tang DM-iTang DM-p
The new BYD Tang DM-i adopts the front end similar to the current Tang DM-p trim level. It has a large polygonal chrome-plated grille with scale-looking pattern. According to BYD, it represents the dragon scale. The front bumper of the Tang DM-i has glossy black trim panels and vertically aligned air flows. Its headlights remained the same. The chrome-plated element with a distinguishing Tang (唐) logo joins them.

From the side, the new Tang DM-i hasn’t changed much. It has blackened pillars and a suspended roof. In contrast with the current trend for retractable door handles, the BYD Tang DM-i adopts conventionally-designed handles. The taillight unit of the BYD Tang DM-i has an LED pattern that represents the Chinese knot. Every latest BYD model adopts this styling element.

Inside, the Tang DM-i adopts a large floating rotatable 15.6-inch screen, a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster, and cool ambient lighting. It has seven seats. The powertrain of the BYD Tang DM-i adopts a 1.5-liter petrol-powered engine for 102 kW paired with a single electric motor for 160 kW. This system takes power from the LFP battery pack, which is suitable for 112 km of electric range.
The price tag of the updated BYD Tang DM-i has yet to be revealed. The current price range of this model is 209,800 – 249,800 yuan (29,150 – 34,700 USD). We will remind you that BYD also sells the Tang DM-p variant with two e-motors and 4WD that costs 269,800 – 309,800 yuan (37,500 – 43,000 USD).

Soon, Chinese customers will be able to buy the entry-level Tang DM-i that will look exactly like its high-performance sibling. It can boost the sales volume of this vehicle. However, the demand for the high-priced DM-p variant will probably drop in China. We will track the Tang DM-i facelift, so stay tuned!
