BYD officially launched the long-awaited Sea Lion 07, a midsize SUV, in China. It is based on the new e-platform 3.0 Evo and is the latest addition to the BYD Ocean series. It comes in four variants, and prices start at 189,800 (26,250 USD).

  • 550 Standard:189,800 yuan (26,250 USD)
  • 610 Long Range:199,800 yuan ( 27,700 USD)
  • 610 Smart:219,800 yuan (30,400 USD)
  • 550 4WD Smart:239,800 yuan (33,200 USD)
The BYD Sea Lion 07 draws inspiration from the Ocean-X concept car, which continues the BYD Seal’s design language. The outside looks smooth and stylish, and the headlights resemble those on the BYD Seal. The new car also boasts retractable door handles. Its rear design is also similar to the BYD Seal. It has a continuous taillight, a “ducktail” spoiler, and a roof spoiler. Instead of displaying “Build Your Dreams” at the rear, a more simplistic BYD logo can be seen.
While the exterior resembles the BYD Seal saloon, BYD has integrated the Sea Lion 07 with many innovations. The e-Platform 3.0 Evo is a significant upgrade from the e-Platform 3.0. It improves the enhanced integration of the powertrain and charging capabilities.

Enhanced CTB (Cell-to-body battery) integration technology improves frontal collision safety by 60%, passenger cabin deformation resistance by 50%, regional body strength by over 60% compared to industry standards, and passenger cabin intrusion during collisions by less than 5 mm, all of which improve occupant safety.
12-in-1 smart e-drive system with the world’s highest-speed production motor (23,000 rpm), with a top speed of 225 km/h. BYD’s innovative electric motor system combines critical components into a single unit, improving efficiency and reliability.
The new car features three powertrains. The two-wheel drive models include electric motors with 230 kW and 170 kW power outputs. Meanwhile, the four-wheel drive model has two motors, with maximum power outputs of 160 kW and 230 kW. The single-motor model offers two range options: 550 km and 610 km, while the dual-motor model has a range of 550 km. The maximum torque is 380 N·m, with 0-100 acceleration times of 7.3 seconds and 6.7 seconds, respectively. The battery capacity is 71.8 kWh and 80.64 kWh.

The BYD Sea Lion 07 can charge 10 – 80% in 25 minutes. As the world’s first, it can fully utilize the maximum capacity of existing GB15 (China’s charging network standard) public DC fast charging of 180kW (750V / 250A).
The Sea Lion 07 is the first BYD vehicle to feature the DiPilot 100 “God’s Eye” ADAS integrated with 12 ultrasonic radars, 5 mm-wave radars, and 11 cameras. It offers advanced L2 driver assistance, including lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, lane departure assistance, traffic sign recognition, and intelligent speed control.
Its dimensions are 4830/1925/1620 mm, and its wheelbase is 2930 mm. It has a frunk of 58 liters of capacity and a boot size of 500 liters.
BYD Sea Lion 07 has a flat-bottomed four-spoke steering wheel, a crystal gear selector, physical buttons for essential controls, and a 50-inch AR-HUD. The 15.6′ central screen runs on the DiLink 100 system, powered by a 6nm chip supporting voice control. The ambient lights around the cabin can emit up to 128 colors. The car comes with a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system. Other features include a 220V power supply for your laptop, a karaoke system, and NFC keyless entry. Furthermore, the vehicle has 11 safety airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, and driver monitoring assistance.
With its competitive pricing and new advanced features, the BYD Sea Lion 07 aims to challenge the top-selling Tesla Model Y in the Chinese market. Will it succeed? Only time will tell.
If you want to see me test drive the new BYD Sea Lion 07 when it becomes available, leave a comment. I’ll do my best to help.

China Car Exports Hit Record High in April, as Local Sales Drop

May 10, 2024

Car exports jumped by 38% year-on-year to 417,000 units in April, after a 39% rise in March; but domestic sales were down nearly 6% from 2023

Car exports from China shot up to a record high in April, according to data released on Friday.
Auto exports surged 38% year-on-year to 417,000 units in April, after rising 39% in March, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) said.
The jump in exports came as domestic sales slipped 5.8% from a year earlier amid intensifying price competition and consumers’ caution about spending on big items during a shaky economic recovery.

An ongoing anti-subsidy investigation by the EU into Chinese automakers has disrupted and put pressure on vehicle exports to the bloc.
But China has been actively exploring South America, Australia and ASEAN markets for exports, Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the association, said.

Plug-in hybrids outselling EVs in China

He said local automakers would have to make a choice between going overseas and losing out, as competition in the domestic market intensifies.
Passenger vehicle sales in the world’s biggest auto market fell 5.8% in April from a year earlier to 1.55 million units and slipped 9.6% from March, CPCA data showed. Car sales had risen 5.7% in March on the year, and jumped 53% on the month.
Market sluggishness was worse than expected, while some automakers still strived to keep producing and resulted in rising inventories at dealerships,” Cui said.
While the share of new energy vehicle sales scaled a new high, paving the way for the world’s largest auto market to fast-track its green goal, EV sales are still far slower than those of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).
NEVs accounted for 43.5% of total car sales, a record full-month high after hitting a milestone of more than half in the first half of April. China has set a target of 45% by 2027.

PHEV sales up 64%

EV sales quickened to 12.1% in April from 10.5% in March, while PHEV sales jumped 64.2% against a rise of 75.4% in March. EV sales had contracted 6.3% from March while PHEV sales dropped 4.7%.
The PHEV segment, which has grown faster since 2022, drives the success of domestic giant BYD, making up 57% of the company’s car sales in April.
China’s share of the global PHEV market rose to nearly 70% in the first quarter, Association data showed.
Japanese automakers who have pioneered hybrid technologies lagged behind, capturing just 1.9% of the global PHEV market in the first quarter.
Mediocre EV sales versus growing bets on an all-electric future underscore slowing demand in China despite a protracted price war that has drawn in more than 40 brands.
To woo cautious consumers, China has announced subsidies of up to 10,000 yuan ($1,380) each for auto trade-ins and more automakers, including Tesla and BYD, have started offering best-selling models with no down-payments.

Last month we reported on the IM L6 doing the moose test, also known as elk test, driverless at 71 km/h. Technically this was a fail due to a pass speed being 72 km/h and requiring the car to be fully laden – the car in the test was empty. However, any doubts about the ability of the L6 have been laid to rest by a driver who has exceeded the speed record. The actual speed will be revealed at the car’s launch event on May 13th but the teaser poster tells us that it is 85+ km/h and the record was set on April 22.

The previous record had stood since 1999 by none other than a Citroën Xantia Activa V6. It’s speed of 85 km/h (53 mph) has failed to be beaten by sports car from Porsche and McLaren. Strangely SAIC is not emphasizing the fact that the L6 beat a Citroën!
Like the Citroën key to the result for IM Motors has been the setup of the car which makes it different to a conventional car. For the L6 it is what IM call the lizard digital chassis. This has collaborative management for movement of the car on three axes -the third being vertical – along with six degrees of freedom for movement of the whole vehicle. It’s claimed that the response time is 30% faster than traditional ESP and that an intervention takes only 0.3 seconds.

Extreme obstacle avoidance ability is upped through a dual intervention strategy of the L6’s rear wheel steering and adjustment of longitudinal torque. This helps suppress the flicking of the tail and increases the limits of the car by 5-8 km/h which obviously helped with beating the moose test record.
IM claims the L6 chassis has the only intelligent four-wheel steering system in its class and claims that it makes not only the steering action of the whole vehicle extremely stable but also greatly improves driving stability in the event of an emergency.
Teaser poster for the IM L6 beating the moose test record with a speed over 85 km/h.
Features of the intelligent chassis include an electronically controlled vibration system which has an adjustment time of 10 ms in response to perceived road surface information. Furthermore, the L6 has lightweight aluminum front double wishbone suspension and rear five-link performance suspension plus the car rides on high performance tires.

Pre-sales for the IM L6 opened last month with three models going on sale priced between 230,000 and 330,000 yuan (31,850-45,700 USD). The most expensive of these features the 130 kWh Lightyear battery which IM claims to be the world’s first mass produced semi-solid state battery giving the car over 1000 km CLTC range. Within 23 hours of the opening of pre-sales last month the L6 racked up over 10,000 orders. More details will be known at the launch event on May 13 and deliveries should commence by the end of the month.

On May 11, the BYD Seal X hatchback was declared by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), positioned as a pure electric sedan under the Ocean series. It is likely the “X” is a name placeholder since nameplates of “Seal 06GT”, “Seal MINI” and “Seal 05EV” all appeared on the declaration. It is a production version of the BYD Ocean-M concept revealed last month at the Beijing Auto Show.

Seal 06GT, Seal MINI, and Seal 05EV nameplates
Currently, the BYD Seal family consists of the Seal 06, Seal EV, Seal DM-i, and Seal U (an international name for the BYD Song Plus). In April, 14,269 vehicles were sold under the BYD Seal family, accounting for 10.26% of the Ocean series monthly sales, which were 139,046 vehicles.

The overall dimensions of the BYD Seal X are 4630/1880/1490 mm, and the wheelbase is 2820 mm. The tire specification is 225/50R18 and the maximum speed can reach 200 km/h. In addition, the BYD Seal X will be available in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The single-motor model will have a maximum power of 160 kW, and the dual-motor model will have a combined power of 310 kW. The battery will come from BYD’s Blade batteries (lithium iron phosphate type) supplied by FinDreams. Other powertrain info has not been revealed further at this time.

In the front, the slender headlights adopt a crescent-shaped design while the lower section adopts a fang-like design. The front is also equipped with a lidar.
Furthermore, the BYD Seal X will run on either petal-shaped or crab-claw rims, available in 18-inch and 19-inch.
2024 BYD Seal EV
For reference, the 2024 BYD Seal EV models declared by the Chinese MIIT earlier in March have the following power:

  • BYD7006BEVA6: 170 kW single motor
  • BYD7006BEVA10: 230 kW single motor
  • BYD7006BEVA8: 390 kW dual motors
We’ll watch for more info closely for the BYD Seal X, stay tuned!

On May 11, Dongfeng’s high-end new energy brand Voyah’s new pure electric SUV called Zhiyin was revealed by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The car is internally codenamed H37 and is positioned lower than the Voyah FREE. Zhiyin’s (知音) literal Chinese translation is bosom friend.

The Voyah Zhiyin is likely to be jointly built by Voyah and Huawei, and will be equipped with the Huawei Qiankun system and HarmonyOS technology. On April 24 at the 2024 Voyah Spring Technical Communication Meeting, Voyah officially announced that a new model with in-depth cooperation with Huawei will be launched this year. Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8 (Leopard 8) was revealed by the regulator in China, showing some key specs of the new hardcore SUV. Fang Cheng Bao is a new brand under BYD, focusing on personalised vehicles, according to the automaker.

The Fang Cheng Bao brand was officially revealed in August 2023. Its first and yet only car on the market – Bao 5 – was launched in November. The flagship SUV Bao 8 will be its second car.

On May 12, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) reported that BYD applied for market homologation of the Bao 8, revealing the pictures of the production version. No car without MIIT approval can be sold in China, and the ministry publishes the list monthly. Automakers are not happy about this, as it reveals pictures, specs, and other secrets of cars they haven’t yet launched. But we don’t mind.

Bao 8 is a large, rugged SUV almost 5.2 meters long with six or seven seats. The dimensions are 5195/1994/1875 mm and wheelbase 2920 mm. The curb weight is 3,905 kg.
Like its smaller peer, the Bao 5, the Bao 8 is an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). This means it has an ICE that is not connected to the wheels but can power the battery or the e-motor. The 2.0 turbo engine produces 200 kW of power.
Bao 8 has two electric motors, one smaller one in the front with 200 kW and 300 kW in the rear. The total powertrain output is 700 kW (939 hp). The acceleration from 0 to 100km/h is 4.8 seconds, and the top speed is 180 km/h.

275/55R20 and 275/50R21 tires and other details of Bao8. Credit: MIIT
The electricity is stored in BYD’s lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP) Blade battery from BYD’s wholly-owned subsidiary FinDreams. However, the capacity hasn’t been revealed yet.
The car will sit on BYD’s new DMO platform dedicated to offroad vehicles and feature the Disus-P suspension system.
Listing in the regulator’s catalog is usually the last step before shipping the car to the market. CarNewsChina expects the Bao 8 will officially launch in Q3 at around 500,000 yuan (70,000 USD).
