At the opening of the Chongqing International Auto Show on June 7, IM Motors launched its LS7 Max SUV, namely, the LS7 Max Elite and LS7 Max Lux, with a price tag of 299,800 yuan (41,400 USD) and 319,800 yuan (44,100 USD), respectively. The IM LS7 Max is based on the LS7, and has been upgraded mainly in terms of intelligent driving and interior configurations.

The car is 5049 mm long, 2002 mm wide, 1763 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 3060 mm, positioned as a medium-to-large SUV.
It has 1435 mm rear legroom, 1030 mm rear headroom, and 133 mm rear knee room. The rear right zero gravity seat can be adjusted to 121° while the left non-zero gravity seat supports 12° electric adjustment. Additionally, the passenger seat can be folded to fit under the dashboard. Consumers who lock in the order before July 31 can enjoy limited free upgrade to the zero-gravity seat.

The IM LS7 Max continues the existing design style, featuring petal-shaped rims, closed front face, “L”-shaped headlights, and triangular intelligent interactive lights on both sides below the headlights.
Intelligent driving configurations are major highlights of the IM LS7 Max, realized via two ultra-long range 96-line roof lidars, 11 cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars, 3 millimeter-wave radars, and Nvidia Orin X chip. Starting from the third quarter of this year, all IM models equipped with lidar will have city NOA (navigate on auto-pilot) functions without high-precision maps.
Another highlight is the interior. The most eye-catching is probably the half steering wheel, although more Chinese carmakers are beginning to adopt this design. A 26.3-inch large screen and a 15.5-inch co-pilot screen sit on the dashboard, in addition to a 12.8-inch screen that sits on the center console. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip is also not absent.

Moreover, the IM LS7 Max cancelled the storage slot behind the cup holders.
The IM LS7 Max continues to be powered by a rear electric motor with a maximum power of 250 kW (340 hp) and a peak torque of 475 Nm. Two ternary lithium battery capacities are offered in 90 kWh and 100 kWh, providing a corresponding CLTC range of 640 km and 705 km. The entire series also comes standard with IM Motors’ four-wheel steering and lizard digital chassis, enabling control of the car movement on three axes with six degrees of freedom.

The Lynk & Co Zero electric sedan was officially revealed in teaser images as it’s gearing up for the market launch. This EV will make its debut on June 12. It stands on the SEA modular architecture that underpins various Zeekr-branded cars. At the same time, a Chinese blogger has measured its size.

Lynk & Co is a joint brand under Geely and Volvo launched in 2017. Nowadays, it has a diverse model line in the domestic market, selling seven distinctive cars with petrol-powered and plug-in hybrid powertrain options.

Lynk & Co Zero teaser images

The Lynk & Co Zero teaser images revealed its taillight unit, which consists of several rectangular LED elements similar to those of the recently launched Lynk & Co 07 and Lynk & Co 08. Aside from the taillight strip, we can underline a ducktail spoiler and a minimalistic rear bumper. The Zero EV also has an independent trunk door with the “Lynk & Co” inscription on it. Another teaser image shows a huge panoramic roof.

Previously, the Lynk & Co Zero was spotted several times in China. It follows the brand’s latest design language with distinguishing LED running lights, retractable door handles, and blackened pillars. It also adopts aerodynamic wheel covers that enhance the drag coefficient. The front end of the Zero sedan has a sloped bonnet line, headlights integrated into the front bumper, and a trapeze-shaped air intake.

Lynk & Co Zero specs

There is no official information about the Lynk & Co Zero specs. However, we do know it stands on the SEA modular architecture designed by Geely’s team headed by Saab veteran Kent Bovellan. The same chassis and its offshoots underpin every Zeekr model, Smart #1, Smart #3, Volvo EX30, Volvo EM90, Jiyue 01, Polestar 4, LEVC L380, Radar RD6 and other cars.
It was reported that Lynk & Co Zero would adopt an 800V high-voltage system that will allow this sedan to charge from 10% to 80% in under 15 minutes. It is highly possible the Zero EV will adopt Shenxing (LFP) and Qilin (ternary NMC) batteries from CATL, as this battery maker runs a joint venture with Geely Group. Previously, sources reported that Lynk & Co Zero would possibly get four-wheel steering, a CDC system, and dual-chamber air suspension.

Recently, Chinese blogger Doutzen_Ye measured the Lynk & Co Zero sedan. According to his estimations, the pre-production model boasts hefty dimensions of 4995/1900/1500 mm. Its wheelbase reaches 3 meters. The Lynk & Co Zero will make an official debut on June 12. As for the market launch, it is scheduled for H2 2024. The price range of the Zero EV is likely to be in the 200,000 – 300,000 yuan (27,750 – 41,600 USD) range.
Previously, an unnamed electric hatchback from Lynk & Co was seen in Heihe, China. It will also enter the Chinese market this year. Moreover, the Lynk & Co EV will enter the European market. It was announced by Alain Visser, former CEO of Lynk & Co Europe.

Another day, another new BYD. Spy shots show yet another new BYD car this time being referred to as the Song L DMi-i by Chinese media. Quite what this car is, is a mystery especially given the information about an updated Song Plus with the DM-i 5.0 powertrain that has already been declared.

The Song L name for the car appears to date back to earlier spy pictures where the Song character (宋) was clearly visible on the wheels of a more camouflaged test car. Naming of the BYD models is getting increasingly complicated and it should be pointed out the recently launched Seal 06 DM-i has no real relationship with the original Seal EV other than styling, the platforms being completely different. The problem is this new Song L DM-i doesn’t look much like the existing Song L. Instead of being a sleek looking relatively low SUV design like the original electric Song L (see specs), which launched at the end of last year, the new car looks far more like the existing Song Plus (see specs). The only real concessions to the Song L design being the concealed door handles and how the rear looks head on. At the rear it has the same lightbar design and the dual fairing rear spoiler at the top as on the original Song L.
At the front, the face is similar to the Qin L DM-i and there’s a large hexagonal grille. Currently there is no information about the size of the new car. The car uses front MacPherson and rear four-link independent suspension.

Also unknown is the positioning of the Song L DM-i with rumors claiming that it may be a replacement for the Song Plus DM-i. This however would seem unlikely as a new version of that car with the fifth generation PHEV system has only just been declared in the MIIT listings.
Picture from Weibo claiming this is what the BYD Song L DM-i will look like
The new car is also reported to use the same 5th generation DM-i system which BYD recently launched. This is based around a 1.5 liter engine with 74 kW of power and 126 Nm of torque. From the information we know about the Song Plus DM-i we can get a reasonable idea of the remaining specifications of the Song L DM-i. More than likely it will use the same EHS160 motor which gives power of up to 160 kW. Equally the two battery pack capacities of 18.3 and 26.6 kWh are highly likely to be carried over. For the Song Plus DM-i these give 91 and 128 km all-electric ranges respectively and if the battery pack is indeed the same the ranges for the Song L should be very similar. This would also mean fuel consumption around 4.95 and 4.98 l/100 km respectively for the two different battery capacities.

Editor’s note:

We are really not convinced that this car will be called the Song L DM-i due to there being very limited similarity in looks between this car and the original Song L.

The Denza Z9 GT shooting brake from BYD was spotted in China during road tests. This Porsche Panamera rival has already applied for the sales license in China and is gearing up for the official launch in H2 this year. It is available as an EV and PHEV with 900 hp. Next year, the Z9 GT will also reach European soils.

From left to right: D9, N7, N8
Denza was founded in 2010 as a 50-50 joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz. In this JV, BYD was responsible for tech and manufacturing, while Mercedes-Benz did the styling. In 2021, Mercedes diluted its share from 50% to 10% due to low sales volume. After MB almost exited the project, BYD relaunched Denza. Its current model line comprises the D9 MPV, N7, and N8 crossovers. Soon, Denza will launch the Z9 GT shooting brake.

Denza Z9 GT spy shots

Denza Z9 GT was spotted in China without camouflage during road tests. It is a nice black color with an anti-chrome package. Chinese netizens called this model “Darth Vader Edition” after its all-black styling. However, there are still some vivid elements, such as red brake calipers. Other features of the Denza Z9 GT are retractable door handles, cameras instead of mirrors, sharp headlights, and a sporty rear spoiler.

The spotted Denza Z9 GT is likely a BEV variant since it has a more modest front bumper styling. It doesn’t have optional LiDAR sensors, which suggests it is a base trim level. In the front, it has a millimeter-wave radar. From the side, the Z9 GT adopts a slanted roofline and multi-spoke rims. The rear end of this shooting brake has elongated taillight units.
Inside, the Denza Z9 GT adopts a brown-beige color scheme. Its center console has a typical BYD styling with a large floating screen. It also has a D-shaped steering wheel with a thin instrument panel behind it. The center tunnel of the Denza Z9 GT has two cup holders, a crystal retractable gear shifter, and a block of physical controls.

More on Denza Z9 GT

Z9 GT PHEV
The Denza Z9 GT is positioned as a direct Porsche Panamera rival. The BYD’s shooting brake boasts hefty dimensions of 5180/1990/1500 mm with a wheelbase of 3125 mm. Its EV variant is powered by three electric motors (1+2) for 710 kW (952 hp). The PHEV version offers three e-motors for 640 kW (858 hp) supplemented with a 2-liter ICE for 152 kW (203 hp).

Z9 GT EV
Denza Z9 GT is positioned as the global model aimed at the European market, where people tend to love wagons and shooting brakes.

In the run up to the likely launch of the Avatr 07 in the third quarter we now have new spy shots of the interior. The new SUV will be Avatr most affordable model to date and should be priced in the region of 250,000 to 350,000 yuan (34,500 – 48,300 USD).

We already know what the exterior looks like thanks to official unveiling shots along with subsequent uncamouflaged pictures and publicity images. The new interior spy shots are not much better than the previous shot we saw but crucially we now have a picture of the rear bench as well as the front.
Although still heavily camouflaged we can make out the general Avatr family look of the interior. There is a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel along with a large center infotainment screen. Unfortunately the rear shots provides us with little information other than that the Avatr 07 has a flat floor.

Little is currently known about the interior specifications but the Avatr 07 will use Huawei’s HarmonyOS to run the cockpit functions. The car will also come with Huawei intelligent driving ADAS system and comes equipped with Lidar.
Despite being the smallest Avatr to date the car is still quite large measuring in at 4825, 1980 and 1620 (l/w/h) while using a 2940 mm wheelbase. The car rides on 21-inch wheels. It will be available as both a full EV and as a range extended EV with dual and single motor versions available of each.
Rear-wheel drive fully electric versions use a 252 kW motor with all-wheel drive versions adding a 188 kW motor to the front axle. In the case of the rear motor it’s from Changan’s Deepal brand whereas the front one is from Chongqing Tsingshan Industrial. Top speed is 200 km/h.

The range extended version has a lower top speed of 190 km/h and uses less powerful electric motors. A 115 kW 1.5 liter engine from Changan acts as the range extender. Meanwhile, there is a 231 kW motor on the rear axle and in the case of the all-wheel drive an additional 131 kW motor on the front. Battery capacity for the EREV is reported to be 39 KWh giving up to 188 km all electric range.
Avatr started out as a joint venture between Changan and Nio. After Nio withdrew due to financial problems battery producer CATL joined the brand. Currently Changan holds 41% ownership, CATL 14%, Chongqing Chengan Foundation 11% and the remainder spread over various investment groups. Huawei is not a shareholder but provides much of the tech including the HarmonyOS operating system for the cockpit and Huawei’s ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). Huawei’s self-driving system is one of the most advanced in China.
The Avatr 07 was originally referred to by its codename Avatr 15 and we know that another new car the E16 is testing and should launch around the end of this year. Whereas the Avatr 07 is meant to compete with the Tesla Model Y the new car, a sedan, is aimed at the Model 3.

On June 11, Yu Chengdong, the chairman of Huawei’s smart car unit, announced that the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA) welcomes its first coupe SUV officially called the Luxeed R7, jointly created by Huawei and Chery under the Luxeed brand. Previously, this car was spied on the streets and known as the Luxeed S9.

HIMA is an automotive alliance initiated by Huawei in which Huawei participates in the product definition, design, marketing, user experience, quality control, and provides smart car software and hardware to traditional automakers. The current alliance members include Aito (with Seres), Luxeed (with Chery), and Stelato (with BAIC). Soon, a new brand between Huawei and JAC will be announced. In the first five months of this year, 148,098 vehicles were sold under HIMA.
The R in R7 stands for Revolution, according to Yu Chengdong. The Luxeed R7 is expected to launch in the third quarter of this year with a price range of 300,000 – 400,000 yuan (41,400 – 55,600 USD). In terms of body size, according to the parameters exposed online, it measures 4956/1981/1634 mm and the wheelbase is 2950 mm, positioned as a medium-to-large SUV.

The front face is similar to that of the Luxeed S7 with an All-in-One integrated design and a “star track fusion” megapixel smart headlight group. The rear features a through-type taillight group, a spoiler wing, and a new Luxeed R7 logo in the lower right. Additionally, the roof 192-line lidar still remains. The Luxeed R7 is expected to be equipped with the latest Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 3.0 intelligent driving system, Turing chassis system, HarmonyOS system, and 4D millimeter-wave radar.
Furthermore, the Luxeed R7 runs on Pirelli’s P-ZERO 245/55 and 255/50 R20 tires. Both BEV and EREV variants are also offered with an 800V silicon carbide high-voltage system. The single-motor version has a maximum power of 215 kW (288 hp) while the dual-motor version has a maximum power of 365 kW (489 hp). The maximum CLTC cruising range is 855 km. At this time, the official powertrain specifications still need to be confirmed by Luxeed.

On June 11, Xpeng announced that the first vehicle under its new Mona series is called the Xpeng M03, positioned as a compact pure electric sedan. Earlier, He Xiaopeng, chairman of Xpeng, stated that the first model of the Mona series will be unveiled in June and officially launched in the third quarter of this year with a price tag of less than 200,000 yuan (27,600 USD).

The production takes place at Xpeng’s Zhaoqing plant in Guangdong, China, which is also the manufacturing plant of the Xpeng P7. So far, the trial car has rolled off the production line.
Mona stands for “Made Of New AI”, with a focus on intelligent driving. The Xpeng M03 is a collaboration between Xpeng and Didi, in which Didi is responsible for the design, partial R&D, and sales, while Xpeng is responsible for the partial R&D, supply chain, and manufacturing, as well as sales to ordinary consumers. It is worth pointing out that Mona was previously considered to be a sub-brand under Xpeng. However, that is not the case anymore. Rather, Mona is a new series under Xpeng, as evident by the Xpeng logo used on the M03’s closed front face and Xpeng has been calling Mona a series.

The Xpeng M03 is expected to come in three different exterior colors, namely, blue, beige blue, and beige pink, according to the warmup images shared by Xpeng on Chinese social media.
Official imageSpy shot
From the official image, the Xpeng M03 adopts a blue exterior body and combines with a fastback shape. The rear features T-shaped taillights on both sides, similar to the front, as well as a small ducktail spoiler, based on the spy shot. At the same time, a roof lidar is absent. Additionally, He Xiaopeng indicated in an earlier interview that the Xpeng M03 will be based on the brand’s Fuyao architecture, which includes XNGP (Xpeng navigation guided pilot) and X-EEA3.0 electronic/electrical architecture. The battery supplier includes BYD, and the range will exceed 500 km, according to previously exposed information.
Furthermore, Mona’s sales channel will initially adopt a “store-in-store” concept, where a store will be opened inside an existing Xpeng store in the early stage, in addition to online vehicle fleets and other vehicle fleet operators.

Turkey surprisingly impose 40% tariffs on Chinese vehicles from July 7

Turkey’s Ministry of Trade announced over the past weekend that it will impose an additional 40% tariff on cars imported from China. The minimum additional tariff for each vehicle will be 7,000 USD, and it will take effect from July 7.

The Ministry stated that the additional tariffs on ICE and hybrids imported from China aim to protect domestic automakers and address the country’s current account deficit issues.
China is under increasing global trade scrutiny due to its rising exports of electric vehicles. Various countries have accused Beijing of heavily subsidizing these exports to support its electric vehicle builders. The European Commission will decide this week on implementing provisional extra tariffs. Meanwhile, the US announced 100% tariffs on Chinese EV imports last month.

In Turkey, a new tariff of at least 7,000 USD per vehicle on cars imported from China will be enforced starting July 7, as ordered by a presidential decree. The Turkish Ministry of Trade declared that this tariff will apply to both conventional and hybrid vehicles from China to protect the diminishing share of domestic production.
The Ministry emphasized that the decision aligns with efforts to address the country’s current account deficit targets and promote domestic investment and manufacturing. Should the calculated 40% tariff on an imported vehicle’s price fall below 7,000 USD, a minimum tariff of 7,000 USD will be imposed, basically barring budget Chinese vehicles from entering the country
In 2023, Turkey had already introduced additional tariffs on electric vehicle imports from China and implemented regulations concerning EV maintenance and services. The government is pushing for increased production and exports to tackle the chronic current account deficit, which amounted to 45.2 USD billion last year.

Editor’s comment

Last Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan concluded a three-day visit to China, where he met with his counterpart Wang Yi and other officials. The announcement of 40% vehicle tariffs a week later surprised many in China, as can be seen in overreacting posts from local commentators and media.
Also, this week, we should learn what tariffs the European Commission will introduce on Chinese EVs. It will most likely not be as harsh as in Turkey and the US, as many local automakers lobby in China’s favor. And they have a good reason for it – Volkswagen China is the biggest market, Mercedes-Benz is 20% controlled by Chinese companies (10% belongs to state-owned Beijing Auto and 10% belongs to Geely founder Li Shufu), and Geely wholly owns Volvo.
Moreover, many Chinese automakers have already built vehicle factories in the EU. BYD plans a plant in Hungary, Chery chose Barcelona for its first EU EV plant, Great Wall Motor is choosing between Poland, Germany, Czechia, and Hungary, and Leapmotor vehicles will be assembled in Stellantis Polish plant.

More pictures have emerged of the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 3 and this time the spy shots also show the interior as well as the exterior. The third model from the BYD brand, sales may begin around the end of this year and prices are expected to start at 220,000 yuan (30,350 USD).

Currently, the Fang Cheng Bao brand has only one model on sale the Bao 5 with the more upmarket Bao 8 set to start sales around the third quarter of this year. The Bao 3 will round out the trio and be the smallest and most affordable of the off-road optimized PHEV SUVs.
Inside the Bao 3 we can see from the spy shots that it largely follows on from the style first seen in the Bao 5. Carried through on the center console are the same chunky buttons and shifter with a generally simple and tough look about the inside. There is a dashboard mounted infotainment screen and this is expected to be the same 15.6-inch size as in the Bao 5 (see specs). The steering wheel has a four-spoke design and has both buttons and adjustment wheels.

Front and rear shots show distinctive light clusters with a split two line look. From what can be made out under the camouflage the front has a muscular two section look about it along with a thin grille. While we still have no definite news on the size it’s thought that the length might be over 4600 mm and the wheelbase around 2750 mm. From the spy shots we can see there will be an external spare wheel along with a roof spoiler.
The car rides on BYD’s DMO platform which is optimized for PHEV off-roaders. Powertrain will likely be in line with the one on the Bao 5 meaning that the PHEV system will be built around a 1.5 liter turbocharged BYD476ZQF engine with maximum power of 143 kW. While the Bao 3 will have dual electric motors it’s previously been declared that the Bao 3 will have maximum power of more than 310 kW and so it likely the electric motors will be less powerful. In the case of the Bao 5 the front motor has 200 kW of power and can deliver 360 Nm of torque while the rear motor has 285 kW and 400 Nm torque. System combined figures are 505 kW of power and 760 Nm of torque. The Bao 5 comes with a 31.8 kWh battery pack.

Yesterday we brought you spy shots of the BYD Song L DM-i and wondered whether the car really would be called Song L due to it not looking particularly like the all-electric Song L. Today thanks to a tweet (or should that be a weit?) on Weibo by Lu Tian, GM of the BYD Dynasty sales division, we know the name is correct.

The post was complete with a teaser poster which shows a rear view of the car with little visible except the light bar. On the poster it simply says “Song L DM-i, big Song is coming.” The image was accompanied by a message saying “Two Songs are in the hall, so stay tuned.”
The Song L DM-i teaser poster seen on Weibo
BYD’s Song L will use the fifth generation DM-i system, which recently debuted. The new PHEV system created a lot of column space thanks to its claims of 46.06%, 2.9 l/100 km, and 2,100 km as its key performance indicators. These might be what it can achieve in the Qin L or Seal 06 but only the thermal efficiency of the 1.5 liter engine will remain the same in the Song L DM-i with fuel economy and range being not as good due to the added weight and poorer aerodynamics of an SUV.

Our best current idea of the performance is from the information we have about the Song Plus DM-i equipped with BYD’s fifth-generation PHEV system. Although the system is based around a 1.5 liter engine with 74 kW of power and 126 Nm of torque, in the Song Plus DM-i it also uses an EHS160 electric motor which gives power of up to 160 kW. In that car there are two battery pack capacity options of 18.3 and 26.6 kWh which give 91 and 128 km respectively all-electric ranges. Fuel consumption for each is 4.95 and 4.98 l/100 km respectively and we should expect a similar configuration and results in the Song L DM-i.
With the Song L DM-i being referred to as the “big Song” by BYD we can expect the car to be larger than the Song Plus DM-i which might also have a detrimental effect on fuel economy and range. For reference the Song Plus DM-i measures in at 4775, 1890, and 1670 mm (l/w/h) along with a wheelbase of 2765 mm. Both the Qin L and Seal 06 have a 2790 mm wheelbase and it is possible as the Song L DM-i is a new car that it will be the same.
Styling certainly seems similar to the Qin L with the same dragon eye 2.0 design language. There’s also a large blackened air intake grille and chrome decoration.

With the teaser poster touching down today we can expect the new car to launch around September or October. Previously it was suggested that the Song Plus DM-i would become the Sea Lion DM-i and be sold as part of the Ocean range. This is now looking more possible.

Spy pictures of a new Denza flagship SUV, possibly called the N9, have emerged. Although Chinese media initially speculated this car was known as the Tang L it has now been confirmed that it will be part of the Denza brand rather than the main BYD brand.

Pictures show that this car is the largest SUV yet from the Denza brand and given that the existing SUV models are known as the N7 and N8 logic suggests the new car is called the N9. Furthermore, a previous tweet by Zhao Changjiang, GM of sales at Denza, showed a shot of a large camouflaged SUV with a message saying it was the flagship. These latest spy shots show a car looking much like the one in the prior tweet.
The original tweet from Zhao Changjiang mentioning that the car is the Denza flagship SUV.
From the spy shots we know that the car is still some way off, probably at least half a year from launch. We can see that the design of the lights has yet to be finalized and installed. Fast and slow charging ports are on the right-hand side of the car, with one of the pictures showing these uncovered.

We can see from the pictures that the car is large and probably a similar size to the Li Auto L9 and Aito M9, cars the Denza most likely will compete against. It should feature a large and comfortable third-row space and may only come as a six-seater to prioritize comfort.
Denza last year said it would introduce 8 new models within 3 years. It also said at the time that it would introduce three flagship models one of which would be the N9 SUV to be released at the end of 2024.
Powertrain for the new model is likely to be similar to the setup in the Denza Z9 GT, which is also one of the flagship models, and so we can expect both fully electric and PHEV versions. In the case of the EV version of the Z9 GT it has a 230 kW motor on the front axle while the rear axle has two motors with 240 kW each. The PHEV version uses a BYD479ZQA 2.0T engine from BYD which has maximum power of 152 kW. It also has three electric motors with the front getting a 200 kW peak power TZ210XYD motor whereas the rear axle has two TZ220XYAV motors, each with up to 220 kW.

Given that the Z9 GT is 5180 mm long and has a wheelbase of 3125 mm this should give us some idea of the dimensions of the new N9. The Denza N9 will come with some form of driving assistance with at least higher spec versions using Lidar.
Denza originally started life as a 50:50 joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz. Sales were never good and in 2021 Mercedes-Benz watered down its stake to 10% and since then the brand has gone from strength to strength.

On June 12, Hongqi launched its Guoli luxury executive sedan under its new Hongqi Golden Sunflower brand, priced at 7.18 million yuan (990,000 USD). Golden Sunflower is the name reserved for Hongqi’s most expensive and luxurious models.

The Hongqi Guoli is the successor model of Hongqi L5. Besides the Guoli (国礼), three other models, namely, Guoyao (国耀), Guoya (国雅), and Guoyue (国悦) make up the Golden Sunflower fleet under the brand.
In the front, the fleet’s classic oversized vertical waterfall-style grille is not absent, paired with protruding round retro headlights, which is inspired by the Chinese cultural tradition of “the sky is round and the earth is square”, according to Hongqi. Additionally, the front engine compartment is long.

The Hongqi logo at the center is retractable and the headlights are made up of crystal-like units, further showing off the car’s identity. It is worth mentioning that the logo is tilted forward 23.5°, representing the inclination angle of Earth’s axis.
The Hongqi Guoli measures 5980/2090/1710 mm with a 3730 mm wheelbase and a 3150 kg curb weight, positioned as a large sedan. Compared with the 2014 Hongqi L5 Zhizun Edition, the vehicle length has increased by 425 mm and the wheelbase has increased by 295 mm.
Power comes from a 4.0T V8 turbocharged engine with a maximum power of 285 kW (388 hp) and a peak torque of 530 Nm, mated to an 8AT. The comprehensive fuel consumption is 15.2L/100km and the top speed is 220 km/h.

The interior is wrapped in leather material and decorated with Hongqi elements, including the Hongqi golden sunflower logo on the steering wheel, gear lever, and armrest. At this time, the specific cockpit parameters have not been revealed. It is equipped with a double-spoke multi-function steering wheel and a dual-screen composed of an instrument panel and a central control screen. Below the screen is a gauge device that might be used for temperature control.
The center console also comes with a large number of physical buttons and knobs, making it look quite busy.
Furthermore, the Hongqi Guoli adopts a 2+2 seat layout in which the second row has two independent seats with an armrest and supports electric adjustment, leg rest, ventilation, heating, and massage functions. The armrest also comes with a control panel.

Chery Chairman Yin Tongyao confirmed previous rumors about Jaguar Land Rover’s adoption of Chery’s platforms during the interview. JLR’s future PHEV and BEV models will stand on M3X and E0X modular architectures that underpin such cars as Exlantix ET, Exlantix ES, Luxeed 7, Luxeed R7, Exeed RX, Chery Tiggo 9, etc.

Chery-JLR plant in China
Chery and Jaguar Land Rover have a 12-year friendship story in China. Back in 2012, these companies formed a joint venture in China to manufacture Jaguar Land Rover cars. The jointly-owned factory started operating in 2014 and is still in business. JLR engineers helped Chery a lot with the suspension setup. Moreover, Land Rover cars became a huge inspiration for Chery designers. And now it is Chery’s turn to help JLR.

Jaguar Land Rover to adopt Chery’s modular architectures

Chery’s high-end brand Exeed recently shared that it has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Jaguar Land Rover. This agreement allows JLR to use Exeed’s platforms to create its future vehicles. Formally, it is an agreement between JLR and Exeed. However, that Chinese brand is fully owned by Chery Group. So, frankly speaking, we can call it an agreement between Indian Tata Motors and Chinese Chery Group.

M3X platform
Regarding the topic, Exeed confirmed that JLR will use two main platforms designed by Chery engineers. The first one is the M3X modular architecture. Its second generation is also known in China as T2X. Chery developed it with help from German Bentler. It is the platform dedicated to ICE vehicles and PHEVs. Of course, Jaguar Land Rover is mostly interested in the adoption of plug-in hybrid tech as it lags behind the NEV industry.
DHT “Syper Hybrid”
The M3X architecture can be equipped with Chery’s “Super Hybrid” powertrain. It comprises a petrol-powered ICE paired with two electric motors via a 3DHT165 gearbox. A few years back, this transmission was the world’s first gearbox to adopt two e-motors in one body. The main benefits of this DHT hybrid are nine operating modes, 11 gear combinations, over 1000-km range, and a thermal efficiency of 44.5%. The M3X (T2X) platform with DHT hybrid underpins such cars as Exeed RX PHEV, Chery Fulwin T9, etc.
Exeed Exlantix ES stands the E0X architecture
The second modular architecture that Jaguar Land Rover cars will adopt is the E0X. It was developed jointly by Chery and Huawei. This chassis currently underpins four vehicles: Exlantix ES, Exlantix ET, Luxeed S7, and Luxeed R7. This platform covers various body shapes. It is suitable for both BEV and EREV cars. Other benefits of E0X are the utilization of the 800V high-voltage system, the stated energy consumption of 12 kWh/100 km, and advanced autonomous driving tech. E0X can also be equipped with air suspension. Overall, it is a high-end platform suitable for JLR’s electric cars and range extenders.

Editor’s comment

Exlantix ET SUV
Indian-owned Jaguar Land Rover lags behind the trend for new energy vehicles. Its only BEV, the Jaguar I-Pace, was launched six years ago. At the same time, JLR’s sales volume slowly declines. This problem is especially acute in China since there is a huge trend for NEVs. This is why the Tata-owned automaker asked for Chery’s help. Most likely, M3X and E0X-based Jaguars and Land Rovers will sell exclusively in the Chinese market to satisfy local buyers’ needs.
Worth mentioning Jaguar Land Rover isn’t the only automaker to adopt Chinese modular architectures to build NEVs. It is a growing trend among lots of automakers. For clarity, Mitsubishi Airtrek adopts GAC’s GEP; Smart and Lotus EVs are underpinned by Geely’s SEA; Renault cars will adopt Geely’s CMA; Volkswagen agreed to use E/E platform from Xpeng; future Audi vehicles will be underpinned by iO Origin platform from SAIC.

In week 23 of the year (June 3 – 9), the China EV market was mostly down, with few exceptions, such as Li Auto and Aito. Xiaomi sales were down 5% compared with the week before, Nio was down 50%, Tesla was down 20%, and BYD sales were nearly flat.

Li Auto publishes the weekly sales data, which resumed publishing registration data after a few weeks without any official explanation. The numbers are rounded and present new energy vehicles (NEV), the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.
BYD took the first spot, registering 53,400 vehicles, down 1,12% from 53,400 units the week before. Last month, in May, BYD delivered 330,488 vehicles in China.

BYD doesn’t stop its EV offensive, flooding the market with dozens of new BEVs and PHEVs, accelerating the price war, and waiting for other EV makers to start losing the wheels. Aside from the BYD badged brand, BYD has three premium sub-brands: YangWang, Fang Cheng Bao, and Denza.
Under the leading BYD brand, the Shenzhen-based automaker recently launched two new plug-in hybrids, BYD Seal 06 and BYD Qin L. According to automotive survey agency CarFans, both models received 80,000 locked-in orders two weeks after the launch. BYD confirmed that Qin L delivered 5,000 units in three days following the launch. Moreover, BYD Song L DM-i, a new PHEV variant of the all-electric Song L, was officially announced and is poised to enter the market soon.
Its second brand, Denza, is also very active. The new Denza N9 flagship SUV, expected to launch at the end of the year, was recently spied in China, revealing its similarity in powertrain to the Z9 GT. Additionally, the Denza Z9 GT, a 900 hp shooting brake, was spotted during road tests on June 10, indicating its upcoming launch in the second half of this year.

Denza sells three models: D9 MPV, N7, and N8 SUVs.
Its third brand, Fang Cheng Bao, is not behind, as its upcoming hard-core SUVs, Bao 3 and Bao 8, were recently spotted in China in new spy shots, including the interior.

Tesla won second place, registering 12,000 vehicles, down 21.05% from 15,200 units the week before and 17.65% up from 10,200 last year. The week 23 (W23) of 2023 was June 5 – 11.
In April, Tesla introduced a 0% interest loan on vehicle purchases in China. Customers only need to pay a 79,900 yuan (11,200 USD) deposit to receive the loan, payable in up to 5 years.

Li Auto secured the third spot overall and first spot among EV startup builders, registering 10,900 vehicles, up 29.76% from 8,400 units the week before and 53.52%, up from 7,100 the same week last year. Last month, Li Auto delivered 35,020 vehicles in China.

Huawei-backed Aito came in fourth, registering 8,900 vehicles, up 27.14% from 7,000 units the week before and 709.09% up from 1,100 last year. Last month, Aito delivered 32,973 vehicles in China.
GAC Aion took fifth place, registering 6,600 vehicles, down 12.00% from 7,500 units the week before. Last month, GAC Aion delivered 40,073 cars in China.
Wuling came sixth, registering 5,400 vehicles, down 38.64% from 8,800 units the week before. Last month, Wuling delivered 44,611 cars in China.
Geely’s Zeekr maintained its position, registering 4,200 vehicles, unchanged from 4,200 units the week before and 110.00% up from 2,000 last year. Last month, Zeekr delivered 18,616 cars in China.
Stellantis-backed Leapmotor took eighth place, registering 3,800 vehicles, down 11.63% from 4,300 units the week before and 26.67% up from 3,000 last year. Last month, Leapmotor delivered 18,165 cars in China.
Nio came ninth, registering 3,500 vehicles, down 47.76% from 6,700 units the week before and 150.00% up from 1,400 last year. Last month, Nio delivered a record-breaking 20,544 vehicles in China, surpassing its all-time high of 20,462 last July.
Nio expects the June deliveries to be between 17,800 and 19,800 vehicles.
On May 15, Nio launched its first sub-brand, Onvo, and introduced the Onvo L60 coupe-SUV. The EV will compete with the Tesla Model Y in China, and pre-sale started at 30,500 USD. Delivery is set for September.
Nio plans to launch its second sub-brand, Firefly, in Q4 2024 in China. This is quite surprising as Firefly was initially meant as a Europe-bound brand. The launch was expected to take on the Old Continent, starting with an entry-level EV hatchback competing with VW ID.3. However, due to Nio’s disappointing sales in the EU, the company had to change strategy for Firefly, and the debut will take place in China.

Changan’s Deepal ranked tenth, registering 2,500 vehicles, down 7.41% from 2,700 units the week before and 66.67% up from 1,500 last year. Last month, Deepal delivered 14,371 cars in China.
Denza took eleventh place, registering 2,100 vehicles, down 16.00% from 2,500 units the week before and 19.23% down from 2,600 last year. Last month, Denza delivered 12,223 cars in China.
Xiaomi came twelfth, registering 2,100 units of SU7 sedan, down 4.55% from 2,200 units the week before. Last month, Xiaomi delivered 8,630 SU7 in China.
Last month, the company raised its 2024 delivery target from 100,000 to 120,000 units, reflecting a 20% increase. The SU7 all-electric sedan launched on March 28 and received strong market acceptance, with over 88,000 orders by the end of April. This month, Xiaomi’s factory will shift to double production to meet high demand.
From weekly numbers, we can see the plant’s production capacity is still fluctuating as the plant started trial production only earlier this year. The official production capacity is 150,000 vehicles per year in the first phase and 300,000 in the second phase.

Volkswagen-backed Xpeng took the thirteenth spot, registering 1,800 vehicles, down 28.00% from 2,500 units the week before and 20.00% up from 1,500 last year. Last month, Xpeng delivered 10,146 cars in China.
