On June 21, Kaiyi announced that its first plug-in hybrid SUV called Kunlun iHD officially started pre-sale, available in four trims, with a price range of 119,900 – 159,900 yuan (16,500 – 22,000 USD).

Kaiyi, previously known as Cowin, was established in March 2014 as a brand under Chery. Then in 2018, Chery sold parts of Kaiyi to Yibin Automobile Industry Development Investment and Sichuan Yibin Push Group for 2.494 billion yuan (343.5 million USD), in which these two companies hold 50.85% and 1.33% of the share, respectively; and the remaining 47.82% of the shares were still held by Chery. Now, Chery’s shares were reduced to 18%.
In 2023, Kaiyi’s cumulative global sales were 40,210 units, which did not achieve its 60,000 unit target. Currently, Kaiyi exports to more than 26 countries.

Earlier in June, the Kaiyi Kunlun iHD rolled off the production line. The new car adopts Chery’s latest flagship chassis, BYD FinDreams’ plug-in hybrid system, and CATL’s battery. Positioned as a medium-sized SUV, the Kaiyi Kunlun iHD measures 4738/1968/1708 mm, with a 2820 mm wheelbase.
Based on the Kaiyi Kunlun gasoline-powered SUV, the iHD trim has a large frameless front grille design decorated with a dot matrix structure and integrates with the split headlights on both sides. The Kaiyi brand logo can also lit up in the center.
The rear has a roof spoiler, through-type taillights, and double-sided exhaust outlets.

Inside, the cockpit uses a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel. The 14.6-inch touch central control screen suspends from the center console.
The car adopts a 2+3+2 seven-seater layout and the standard trunk volume is 518 L.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.5T hybrid engine (model F22TC) and a front electric motor, mated to an E-CVT. The engine has a maximum power of 102 kW (139 hp) and a peak torque of 231 Nm. The electric motor outputs 150 kW (204 hp) and 300 Nm. The top speed is 180 km/h. The 22.48 kW lithium iron phosphate battery pack supplied by CATL provides a CLTC pure electric range of 150 km and a comprehensive range of 1,200 km. Under fast charging, it takes 30 minutes to replenish the battery to 80%.

Tesla, the pioneering electric vehicle company, first launched its insurance business in 2019. This month, BYD Insurance, the property insurance subsidiary of Chinese automaker BYD, officially announced the expansion of its car insurance offerings in 7 major provinces in China. Before this expansion, BYD insurance had a very limited market reach which began in late 2021. Oddly, one of the places that remains closed for now is Shenzhen, where BYD Insurance is headquartered. In any case, this expansion marks a strategic move by BYD to diversify its business and leverage its expertise in the industry.

Through this service, BYD Insurance provides customers with comprehensive insurance solutions, including car insurance and personal insurance products, tailored to their specific needs. Customers can customize their insurance plans on the enrollment page.
BYD is not the only car maker in the insurance industry. In recent years, several new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturers, such as Tesla, Xpeng, Nio, and Li Auto, have ventured into the car insurance market by setting up or acquiring insurance intermediary licenses. However, most automakers have participated in the insurance industry as intermediaries, meaning they can only act as agents and cannot independently adjust premium rates.

In contrast, BYD Insurance has received regulatory approval to use the nationwide standard compulsory insurance terms, basic insurance rates, and corresponding rate adjustment factors. This allows the company to have more flexibility in pricing and product offerings. Several online users have reported significant savings compared to other major insurance company quotations.
The move to strengthen BYD’s insurance business comes when the NEV insurance market faces challenges, with vehicle owners complaining about high premiums while insurance companies struggle to maintain profitability. BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu has acknowledged this issue, stating that “the company aims to lower various costs and expenses in its insurance operations to ensure that NEV insurance not only avoids losses but also becomes profitable.”
Analysts believe that as automakers have a deeper understanding of vehicle data, they can leverage their automotive expertise to gain a competitive edge in areas such as business acquisition, rate setting, claim assessment, and repair services in the NEV insurance market.

As BYD Insurance officially expands its insurance offerings in 7 provinces, the market will be closely watching its performance and its impact on the broader NEV insurance landscape in China.

In addition, the bottom of the center console is hollowed out to provide additional storage space.

As the entry-level trim, the Air comes standard with front side airbags, a rear radar, cruise control, imitation leather seats, and a 6-speaker audio system. Compared with the Air, the Pro version has front/rear airbags, a front radar, an openable panoramic sunroof, external mirror heating & automatic folding when locked, and electric adjustment of the driver seat. Robocar 07 from Baidu and Geely.

This is the most beautiful car I ever seen.

The coolest, the most futuristic.

It also uses the latest Nvidia Thor for the CPU.

The BYD Song L DM-i interior, a compact SUV, has been captured in spy shots. This vehicle, which maintains the design language of the Qin L DM-i (see specs), is set to showcase BYD’s cutting-edge fifth-generation DM hybrid technology. This unique feature sets it apart from its competitors.

The interior of the Song L DM-i shares much in common with the Qin L DM-i. It features a fully digital embedded instrument panel and a floating-style central control screen, which appears to be 15.6 inches in size. The car has a four-spoke steering wheel, a design element that is typical of the Dynasty family.
The Song L DM-i offers a wireless smartphone charging panel with a maximum charging power of 15 watts. The design of the gear shift lever area is consistent with other BYD models under the Dynasty line. The car also comes with integrated sports seats wrapped in light-colored leather, possibly in the same scheme as the Qin L DM-i, adding a touch of luxury to the interior.

As reported earlier, the mid-size BYD Song L DM-i SUV features a black “dragon’s mouth” grille, thin LED lights, trapezoidal air intake, plastic-trimmed wheel arches, retractable door handles, and tinted rear windows. The rear has unique taillights, a roof spoiler, and independent suspension.
It measures 4780/1898/1670 mm with a 2782 mm wheelbase, slightly larger than the Song Plus. The front and rear tracks are 1637 and 1641 mm, with 18 and 22-degree approach and departure angles. It uses 225/60 R18 or 235/50 R19 wheels and weighs 1930-2000 kg. Inside, it has a 2+3 seating layout, suggesting it might replace the current Song Plus.
The BYD Song L DM-i features the fifth-generation PHEV system, with a 1.5-liter engine (99 hp) and a 215 hp electric motor. It includes an LFP battery from FinDreams, with details on two battery options pending. The system offers 46.06% thermal efficiency, 2.9 L/100 km fuel consumption, and a 2,100 km mixed range. Sales start in the second half of this year, with prices around 120,000 – 130,000 yuan (16,500 – 17,900 USD).

Whoa! Tesla is losing ground fast. Expected considering how bland Tesla cars are.

Actually what's amazing is how even with being bland and expensive they are still #2 while those with far cheaper and flashier cars are far far far below in sales.

I think it is the poor quality reputation Chinese car companies have.
