Personally, I think Huawei and Xiaomi would be a bigger challenger for Tesla. BYD is a battery maker, not exactly a top notch car maker.

uh oh..looks like BYD wasn't able to hold out...
AUSTIN, Texas / Apr 02, 2024 / Business Wire / In the first quarter, we produced over 433,000 vehicles and delivered approximately 387,000 vehicles.

I'm a socialist. I believe in state ownership.

Well it appears the main companies that have put China Inc on the world stage with consumers have all been private...or at least a previous Government entity that has supposedly been privatized.

Huawei, Lenovo, Xiaomi, BYD, Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu, Geely, Haier, DJI, Hisense, TCL..

But on the other hand that is still not many brands

Recently, Dongfeng Forthing officially unveiled its upcoming Xinghai S7 all-electric sedan in China. Once launched (most likely in Q2 2024), it will target the 130,000 to 200,000 yuan (18,000 – 27,000 USD) market segment.

Based on Dongfeng’s S2-E platform, the Xinghai S7 has a drag coefficient of 0.195Cd. Its appearance is relatively mainstream comparing to the other models such as the Tesla Model 3, Xiaomi SU7, and BYD Seal, featuring a fastback design, frameless doors, hidden door handles, and multi-spoke rims. Positioned as a mid-to-large sedan, the car measures 4935/1915/1495 mm, with a 2915 mm wheelbase.

A closed grille is used in the front face, signifying its identity as an electric vehicle, coupled with the “7”-shaped headlights.

The taillights are the through-type, with a luminous LOGO in the middle, further improving the recognition. Power comes from a permanent magnet synchronous motor model TZ200XS3F0, with a maximum power of 160 kW and a peak torque of 310 Nm, paired with a 56.832 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, providing a CLTC range of 550 km. The top speed is 165 km/h and the 0 – 100 km/h acceleration time is 6.67 seconds. Under fast charging, it takes ~27.6 minutes to replenish the battery from 30% to 80%.
The interior features a D-shaped steering wheel, a floating central control screen, and an instrument panel. The center console is also hollowed out to provide additional storage space underneath and supports wireless charging for mobile phones.
In January and February this year, Dongfeng Forthing only sold 7,855 vehicles. In recent years, Dongfeng Forthing has been declining since its peak sales performance in 2016 with 260,000 vehicles, with only 122,300 vehicles sold in 2022 and 51,479 vehicles in 2023. Will the introduction of the Xinghai S7 change the tide? Can you guess the price tag of the car?

Things change and charge fast in China’s EV world, after all that’s why you read Car News China! Just weeks after Li Auto wowed the world with the charging speed of the Mega, the new Zeekr 001 has grabbed the crown to be the fastest charging EV at least in terms of peak power rate.

A Zeekr 001 fitted with a CATL Shenxing 95 kWh super-rechargeable battery charged from 10% to 80% in 11 minutes 28 seconds and in the process added 473 kilometers of range. This feat was achieved using a Zeekr V3 supercharger (600 kW) with an ambient temperature of 26°C. Peak charging power reached 546.4 kW. Between 10 and 35% state of charge the Zeekr 001 maintained charging power of over 540 kW increasing the range by 264 km in 5 minutes and 432 km in 10 minutes.

The new CATL Shenxing battery has temperature control technology to achieve superfast charging across a range of temperatures. Even with a temperature of -10°C, it can be charged to 80% within 30minutes.

Zeekr aims to build 1,000 ultra-fast charging stations this year to add to the current 900 Zeekr operated charging stations which have 2,483 chargers rated at 360 kW and over out of a total of 5,490 chargers.

The new Zeekr 001 launched in February with deliveries beginning on March 1 and constitutes a major upgrade to the car originally launched in 2021. Key upgrades include changes to the platform and the ADAS capabilities of the car. ADAS gets a boost thanks to the addition of a roof mounted Lidar unit.
Crucially the car adopts the new Zeekr 800V platform and the wheelbase is 6 mm longer at 3005 mm than the old car. It is the 800V architecture which helps support such fast charging.

Only the 4WD We version of the Zeekr 001 gets the 95 kWh Shenxing battery which is a lithium iron phosphate unit from CATL. All other versions get a 100 kWh Kirin NCM battery also from CATL. Prices of the Zeekr 001 range from 269,000 yuan (37,500 USD) to 329,000 yuan (45,800 USD).
Zeekr is an all EV brand from Geely and the 001 was the brand’s first car. The brand currently sells four models, the 001, 007, 009 and X. Along with China the brand is already selling in Europe and is moving into other markets including the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Later this month the new Dongfeng eπ 008 will debut at the Beijing Auto Show and teaser images have now emerged of the 6-seater SUV.

eπ is a new NEV brand under Dongfeng Aeolus launched last year in April at the Shanghai Auto Show. The eπ 007, an EV sedan, launched on March 14 and was the first car to go on sale in what is meant to be a premium brand but presumably positioned below Dongfeng’s Voyah range. The Dongfeng eπ 008 which was previously known by the internal codename S59 will be the brand’s second car.
The teaser images were taken during winter testing and based on these and given that the Dongfeng eπ 008 has already been declared by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) production can’t be far off.

There appears to be little carry through from the design of the Dongfeng eπ 007 in the new 008 other than a general minimalism. Notably the new car gains a headlight cluster that runs the width of the car at the front and there is a similar light bar at the rear. Buyers have a choice of 20 and 21-inch wheels.
Size wise it is a considerably larger car and so will become the brand’s new flagship. Length is 5002 mm and the wheelbase is a long 3025 mm while width and height are 1972 and 1732 mm respectively. Given the size there should be plenty of space in the third row.
MIIT listing pictures the EREV is on the left and the all-electric version in the middle
Like the eπ 007 the Dongfeng eπ 008 comes both in all electric and extended range guises. A 200 kW electric motor, presumably on the rear axle, powers the all-electric version and it comes with a 82.28 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack for a 636 km range. The range extended version has a four-cylinder 1.5T engine with a maximum output of 108 kW acting as a generator. The EREV version has an all-electric range of 154 km, all ranges are using China’s CLTC cycle. Currently there is no news of a dual motor version but seeing as the Dongfeng eπ 007 does get this treatment one must be likely.

Spy shots show that the dashboard of the Dongfeng eπ 008 is largely the same as its sedan sibling. Expect an 8.8-inch LCD instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch floating center display, a dual-spoke multi-function steering wheel, leather seats, through-air vents, and a wireless charging pad with ventilation.
Currently prices are unknown but Online Car Market speculate that they could start at around 170,000 yuan (23,500 USD) to undercut the BYD Tang.

Editor’s note:

Dongfeng are one of a number of Chinese companies that are desperately trying to stay relevant in the Chinese car market. With dwindling joint venture sales and little traction with its own brands the company needs to do something fast. Whether the eπ range has what it takes is questionable given the crowded marketplace and brutal cost cutting.

At the weekend Chery launched a new version of the Fulwin A8 the Voyage Editon and recently put the car through two tests to show its effectiveness as a PHEV.

Chery is embarking on a major push of new energy vehicles. Fulwin itself is a sub-brand selling PHEV versions of Chery ICE cars. There are also additional NEV brands including iCar and a new brand Yueji set to launch in the third quarter, the first car said to be a hybrid compact SUV codenamed T1GC. Last year at the 2023 Chery Technology Day, Yin Tongyue, chairman of Chery Holding Group said “Chery will not be as ‘polite’ in the field of new energy next year as before.”
The push that the Fulwin A8 Voyage Edition has received is indicative of the new Chery gloves off attitude to NEVs. To show the company means business Chery undertook two tests with the Fulwin A8 to show its credentials as a PHEV.

In the first test Chery tried to be the first company to drive a PHEV on one tank of fuel and one charge 2,000 km. Judging from the promotional pictures of the event the car seems to be the new Voyage Edition of the Fulwin A8, it is identifiable by the far more EV like enclosed face.

On March 28 two test cars set off from Chery headquarters in Wuhu, Anhui Province and tried to get as far as Yancheng, Jiangsu Province via a 2,000 km route. In the end both cars failed with one traveling 1,919.9 km and the other 1,935 km.
The test showed the range potential of the car. In the other test it tackled the ‘high-speed stall’ worry of PHEVs. This is where the battery has limited charge and the power is insufficient to provide power generation for the battery, run the air conditioning and undertake other high-load conditions. The result is the car will automatically slow down.

Under the test the Fulwin A8 Voyage Edition drove on a high speed oval track at a speed of 180 km/h for an hour without experiencing a problem. Fast Technology reported that the state of charge was 44% at the beginning of the test and that by the end of the test the battery had 47% charge.
The Chery Fulwin A8 Voyage Edition was previously known as the Chery Fulwin A8 Pro. It launched on March 30 with a total of three versions priced between 109,900 (15,200 USD) and 129,900 yuan (17,950 USD). Compared to the existing Fulwin A8 the main difference is the new enclosed grille which makes the car look far more like an NEV. Length, width and height of the new car are 4780, 1843,1469 mm respectively, and the wheelbase is 2790 mm.
Inside the interior is also very much like other versions of the Fulwin A8. It comes equipped with dual 12.3-inch screens which flow into one unit, an opening panoramic sunroof and both heating and ventilation for the driver’s seat. Connectivity comes courtesy of Apple CarPlay and Huawei HiCar.
One key difference of the Fulwin A8 Voyage Edition is the larger battery pack of 18.3 kWh versus 14.2 kWh in other versions of the Fulwin A8. As a PHEV it comes equipped with the Chery Kunpeng super hybrid C-DM system, utilizing the fifth-generation Acteco 1.5TGDI hybrid engine, the vehicle’s fuel tank is 60 liters. Thermal efficiency of the engine is 44.5% and it can provide power of 115 kW and 220 Nm of torque.
Plugin hybrid system fitted to the Chery Fulwin A8 Voyage Edition consisting of 1.5T engine and 18 kWh battery pack

Editor’s note:

I was quite surprised at last year’s Shanghai Auto Show by the sheer number of NEVs and different brands that Chery was suddenly showing. Although the company has dabbled to some extent with NEVs for years with some notable successes like the eQ1 it never really seemed that committed. Any doubts about commitment seem to have been laid to rest at the 2023 show and the comments by Yin Tongyue, chairman of Chery Holding Group, show that we are going to see far more and soon.
The tests using the Chery Fulwin A8 Voyage Edition are an obvious attempt to gain headlines and position the company as a serious contender in NEVs against the likes of BYD and Geely.
