Yesterday we reported that the BYD Qin L would be equipped with BYD’s fifth generation DM-i hybrid system. This system along with Geely’s next generation Thor system both claim that they can deliver up to 2000 kilometers of range when fully charged and with a full tank of fuel.

BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu stated at the recently held 2023 financial report investor’s communication meeting that the BYD fifth generation DM-i technology would launch in May and would see fuel consumption reduce to 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers and that range would be 2000 km with full charge and fuel. DM stands for dual mode and is what BYD calls its PHEV technology, which first appeared in the F3-DM back in 2008.
The new BYD Qin L will be the first BYD car to come with the new generation system. However it should be noted that the best figure for fuel consumption of that car is 3.8 l/100km. It seems that the sub three liters level will be dependent on a smaller car than the relatively large Qin L, Fast Technology claim the smaller Qin Plus might be able to achieve it but that would seem unlikely given the limited difference in size.

Meanwhile, Geely insiders claim that the next generation Thor PHEV system will launch this year and that is has similar capabilities with a 2000 km range and fuel consumption of under 3 liters per 100 km.
Key to Geely’s Thor system hitting the sub 3 liter level will be a new engine which reportedly will become the most thermally efficient engine in production with an efficiency of 46%. For reference the current Thor system as fitted to cars like the Geely Galaxy L6 have a 1.5T Thor electric hybrid 8848 system in which the thermal efficiency of the petrol engine is 44.26%. Fitted to the Galaxy L6 it achieves 4.55 l/100km giving a maximum combined range of 1370 km using China’s CLTC testing system.
Geely Galaxy L7 which comes with Geely’s current Thor 8848 PHEV system
The new Thor PHEV system may debut later this year on a new Geely Galaxy model. It is known that 3 new models will launch this year including the compact E5 all electric SUV, a mid-size all electric SUV, and a mid-size PHEV SUV. It is expected that the latter will be called the Galaxy L5 and will be powered by the new Thor system. Price is likely to be below 200,000 yuan (27,650 USD).

Editor’s note:

Figures of 2000 km range are great for grabbing headlines but so far it doesn’t look like BYD or Geely are about to release a car that can achieve this under the CLTC system. Even if they did, the real world range would be considerably lower given that the CLTC testing system is weighted towards slower urban driving. Presumably achieving the figure would need a careful balancing act between a high energy density battery, low aerodynamics and a small sedan. We will keep you posted if either BYD or Geely actually launch such a car.

I didn't notice how important this news is.

Is the engine built by Geely? Not buying another brand engine like Ford or GM?

I wonder which car brand has the highest thermal efficient engine?

I heard Toyota can achieve only up to 41% thermal efficiency, while Nissan claims their latest engine achieved 50%.

Chinese cars in Indonesia, released several years ago, despite they are cheaper but the operating cost is higher, mainly because of less efficient engine (GM engine) compared with Japanese car like Toyota.

I guess this news changed it all... but only for Geely.

Two things you can be sure of about in the Chinese EV world are how fast moving it is and that one company will always try to outdo another. Just yesterday we reported that BYD and Geely both claimed that their latest PHEV systems are capable of 2000 km and can achieve under 3 l/100km. Well currently Chery is trying to one up them with a real world test that they’re currently live streaming.

The challenge involves driving two Chery Fulwin A8 Pro cars fully fueled and charged to see whether they can achieve the feat. Both set off yesterday at 3 pm from Wuhu in Auhui Province, where Chery is headquartered. The route has 12 stages and involved the team driving through the night and is scheduled to finish at 9 pm Beijing time today when the cars will hopefully reach Yancheng, in Jiangsu Province.
To ensure transparency the cars were fully fueled and charged and then sealed so that the cars could not be refueled or charged on route. Furthermore the challenge is being live streamed on Douyin, China’s TikTok. Currently car 1 is doing slightly better having travelled 1214.6 km and averaged 2.6 l/100km versus 1213.8 km for car 2 which has averaged 2.7 l/100km.

Live stream screen shot from Douyin showing the Chery challenge
The Chery Fulwin A8 Pro uses the Chery Kunpeng super hybrid C-DM system, equipped with the fifth-generation ACTECO 1.5TGDI hybrid engine, the vehicle’s fuel tank is 60L, and the battery capacity is 18.3 kWh. There is an electric motor on the front axle providing 150 kW with 310 Nm of torque. Transmission is a 1-speed hybrid transmission (DHT) unit and the system combined power is 265 kW with torque of 530 Nm.
Currently the Chery Fulwin A8 Pro is not on sale and is due to launch on April 18. It is derived from the Chery Arrizo 8 an ICE car. Fulwin was the name of Chery’s first car and the name has now been resurrected as a sub brand for PHEV versions of Chery models. There is already a Chery Fulwin A8 but the new Pro version looks different with a more enclosed front end.
As yet no car company has tried the 2000 kilometers challenge and we will have to wait a few more hours to see whether Chery succeeds.

Editor’s note:

Chinese car companies are getting very good at doing live-streaming events where their cars undertake feats to gain headlines. William Li did this with a Nio ET7 to achieve over 1000 km distance with the new 150 kWh battery in December last year. And the Chery event is the latest such attempt. However, it is slightly disingenuous as the result is not the same as a CLTC range.
In the early days of EVs in China you would get producers claiming that their car had a range of for example 400 km but when you looked more closely this was at a constant speed of 60 km/h and the NEDC figure, which China then used, was significantly lower. Based on the distance and time for the Chery test route the average speed would seem to be around 70 km/h and so even if the car does achieve the 2000 km distance, which currently it looks like it will, this does not mean the car has a 2000 km CLTC range.

2000 km with 2.6 l / 100 km???

That is crazy!!!

According to this article, the longest PHEV in the world is Mercedes S-Class with 1107 km.

And that is the only PHEV in the world that has 1000 km range in a single charge.

The rest of PHEVs are below 1000 km.

I'm amazed at how Xiaomi cars are fully integrated with Xiaomi smartphones and home appliances.

You can turn on the light at your home, just from the car.

Xiaomi will unveil a new SUV in the last quarter of the year. According to sources, Xiaomi’s second car will be a mid-to-large SUV with an all-electric powertrain and an electric range extended vehicle (EREV) option, a concept popularized by Li Auto.

Xiaomi launched its first car – an electric sedan SU7 – on March 28 in China for 215,900 yuan (29,900 USD), undercutting the price of the Tesla Model 3 by 30,000 yuan (4,100 USD). The base model of Model 3 has a range of 606 km under CLTC conditions and is equipped with a 60 kWh battery from CATL. The base model of Xiaomi SU7 has a 700 km CLTC range with a 73.6 kWh LFP blade battery from BYD. More comparisons can be found here. The SU7 got 50,000 firm orders in 27 minutes following launch.
Xiaomi SU7
MyDrivers reported that Xiaomi has two platforms: Modena, which we already know, and the yet-to-be-released platform supporting EREV. The new Xiaomi SUV will compete with Porsche Cayenne, its benchmark, but mainly with Li Auto, the current sales king among large luxurious SUVs in China.

Li Auto has been selling only SUVs, all of which are EREVs. This strategy worked as Li Auto grew in 2023 to nearly 400,000 sold cars in China and planned to double it in 2024 to 800,000 units. EREV means the EV is equipped with a small ICE engine not connected to the wheels but can charge the battery or support an electric motor.
However, on March 1, Li Auto launched its first all-electric car and first non-SUV. It was a Li Mega MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) with a futuristic design and lots of marketing noise. However, the market acceptance wasn’t so exciting, and early order book and sales reports were disappointing. As a result, Li Auto lowered its 2024 sales target to 560,000 – 640,000 units.
Li Mega MPV
The report argues that Xiaomi learned from Li Auto Mega’s underwhelming market performance and will offer an EREV version of its SUV. Looking at the competitors, it is quite common for luxurious SUVs to have an EREV powertrain in China – for example, YangWang U8 or Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5, Li 9, or Aito M9, which received over 60,000 firm orders since its launch three months ago.

The report also discusses if it was the right decision to launch the first car with a sedan body type. The 200-300k yuan sedan segment is overcrowded in China, with dozens of competitors offering good quality products, while SUV popularity is rising in China. Looking at Tesla, the majority of their sales in China are done by Model Y SUVs as Model 3 sales plummet under the pressure of competition from BYD Seal, BYD Han, Zeekr 001, Zeekr 007, Nio ET5, Xpeng P7, and others.

Xiaomi announced it received 88,898 firm orders for the SU7 within 24 hours following the launch. The test drives started on Friday in China in 59 stores in 29 cities nationwide, resulting in overcrowded venues.

As the SU7 homologation filings revealed, Xiaomi uses a state-owned Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. (BAIC) as a contract manufacturer. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MITT), the Xiaomi SU7 will be assembled by BAIC Off-road Vehicle Co., a subsidiary of BAIC, in the new Xiaomi plant in Beijing. Interestingly, BAIC is also the largest shareholder in Mercedes-Benz, owning 9.98% of the German automaker.

The new Xiaomi plant started construction in April 2022 and was finished in June last year. Xiaomi applied for the sales license of SU7 in November, and the trial production in the plant started in December. The mass production of the SU7 has already begun, however not at full speed, and the customer deliveries will start by the end of April, according to the company.

The Xiaomi Beijing plant has an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles in the first phase, increasing to 300,000 vehicles in the second phase. Considering that production hasn’t yet reached total capacity, Xiaomi will have eight months of full production in 2024, which means it can produce about 100,000 cars, maybe a little more if there are no significant issues with shifts at production lines. The company received about 90,000 firm orders in the first 24 hours and hasn’t released any update since then, but it is almost certain that now, 48 hours after the launch, the order book is way over 100,000 units.
Xiaomi SU7 starts at 215,900 yuan (29,900 USD). According to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, the price was decided a night before the launch, and the aim was to undercut the Tesla Model 3 by 30,000 yuan (4,100 USD). Tesla Model 3 costs 245,900 yuan (34,600 USD) in China for the base model with a 606 km CLTC range and 60 kWh CATL battery.
The top trim level of the Xiaomi SU7 is AWD with dual motors and a combined output of 495 kW (663 hp). Thanks to a 101 kWh Qilin battery from CATL, it has an 800 km CLTC range. It is almost 5 meters long, with dimensions 4997/1963/1440 mm and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm.

Editor’s comment

You might think that the successful acceptance of the Xiaomi SU7 is mainly due to the price or, say, price/value ratio. And yes, it is fair enough, but not exceptional in China. If you look at a competing electric sedan from Geely – Zeekr 007 – it offers similar specs for an even lower price. The base model 007 starts at 6,000 yuan (850 USD), is cheaper at 209,900 yuan (29,000 USD) and features a 688 km CLTC range thanks to a 75.6 kWh battery. It even surpasses the Xiaomi SU7 in terms of power as it has a 310 kW (415 hp) motor with 440 Nm torque. SU7 has “only” 220 kW. It also features Zeekr AD, driving-assisted software.
So, there are two reasons for the SU7’s success. First, the personality of Lei Jun. He is a showman marketing guru who can spark excitement about his product. Does it remind you of someone? Even the whole launch conference had certain Steve Jobs vibes. He is also a fast learner and is not ashamed to admit his competitor gave him lots of support. He took lots of advice from the CEOs of his competitors Nio, Li Auto, and Xpeng, which he invited to the launch show. Interestingly, he did something similar when he launched his first smartphone 14 years ago when he took lots of know-how from Meizu.
Secondly, Xiaomi already has users’ trust in China, which is an essential factor. Most Chinese households have some Xiaomi products, and the connectivity among its devices is excellent. The connectivity with the new product – car- is no exception. Also, regarding trust, there are about 100 EV builders in China now. Most of them will not survive the next five years. When you are a consumer in China, you think about warranty as it influences how much you can sell the car on the secondary market when you want to update. If the automaker goes bankrupt, selling your vehicle will be very difficult.
However, not everything is rainbows and butterflies in Beijing. Reports about negative sentiment emerged as some customers complained they couldn’t cancel their firm order, and some quality issues of text cars started gaining publicity. As it is Xiaomi’s first car, that is not surprising. But at this moment, Xiaomi is the winner as they managed to launch a vehicle within three years of announcing EV making plans in 2021, and China’s EV competition will get even more fierce in 2024. We will keep an eye on it.

On March 30, Dongfeng’s Aeolus brand debuted its first plug-in hybrid SUV called the L7, not to be confused with Li Auto’s Li L7 or the Geely Galaxy L7 SUV. Previously, the L7 was declared by the Chinese MIIT under the Haohan PHEV name. The new car will appear at the Beijing Auto Show that opens on April 25.

In the next three years, Dongfeng Aeolus plans to launch 30 new energy passenger vehicles and 14 new energy commercial vehicles to achieve its 100% electrification goal.

Positioned as a compact SUV, the new car measures 4685/1905/1625 mm, with a 2775 mm wheelbase, a curb weight of 1800 kg, and runs on optional 235/55R19 105V tires.

Notable design elements include a suspended roof, hidden door handles, slender headlights in the closed front face, hidden exhaust outlets, and a high-mounted brake light in the rear.
Power comes from Dongfeng’s Mach plug-in hybrid system composed of a 113 kW 1.5T engine and an electric motor model DFMC15TE3, with a combined power of 265 kW and a torque of 615 Nm. The comprehensive fuel consumption is 0.56 L per 100 km (WLTC). Its 30.32 kWh lithium iron phosphate supplied by CALB (China Aviation Lithium Battery Co., Ltd) provides a comprehensive range of 1,500 km and a pure electric range of 205 km. Fast charging is also supported. It takes 26 minutes to replenish from 30% to 80% or five minutes of charging time to reach a 300 km range.

The interior configurations have not been officially confirmed. Entering the cockpit, the orange vibe is energetic with a minimal number of physical buttons. The large floating central control screen and the D-shaped steering wheel are eye-catching. Above the central control screen are two air-conditioning outlets.

The price has not been revealed at this time, we’ll watch closely for more information.
