Kia on April 1 began producing exports models of the EV5 in China. Up until now the compact electric SUV has been a China only model but the car will be exported from China to both left and hand and right hand drive markets.

The car already exists in right hand drive form having been shown at last month’s Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS). Kia Thailand at the event announced pricing for the car which slots in below the larger EV6. Autohome say that the car will be Australia bound.
The Kia EV5 officially launched at last year’s Guangzhou Auto Show. It is the first China made global EV for Kia and uses the company’s 800V E-GMP platform. Looking somewhat like a scaled down EV9 it has a length, width and height of 4615, 1875 and 1715 mm respectively, while the wheelbase is 2750 mm.

In China power comes from a 160 kW electric motor on the front axle with 310 Nm torque with no all-wheel drive version currently available. However for export there will be an all-wheel drive version which adds a 70 kW motor to the rear axle cutting acceleration from 8.5 seconds down to 6.1 seconds, top speed remains the same 185 km/h. A GT version will be added at a later date.
Battery power seems to vary according to market. In China there are currently six versions on sale with a choice of either a 64.2 or 88.1 kWh battery pack which give the EV5 ranges of 530 km and 720 km CLTC respectively. Both battery packs come from FinDreams, the BYD subsidiary, and use the famous lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade battery. Thai versions seem to use the same batteries however the Korean market version will use a 58 kWh battery on the standard version and a 81 kWh pack on the long-rang version. According to reports some markets may use NMC batteries rather the LFP. The Kia EV5 supports both V2L and V2G.
To aid driving the car has an i-Pedal system which allows true one pedal driving. Inside the car has a dual 12.3-inch continuous screen setup with the instrument panel blending into the infotainment screen. There is an additional 5-inch climate control screen. Seat options include eco-friendly recycled PET fabric and Bio-PU leather coverings. The rear seats fold fully flat.

The Kia EV5 is produced by Yueda Kia at the 4.0 intelligent manufacturing plant in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. Dongfeng previously held a 25% stake in the joint venture but in 2021 sold its stake to Yueda meaning that Kia owns 50% and the remainder belongs to two different Yueda entities. Yueda Kia aims to export 200,000 cars a year by 2026 and claim to currently export to more than 50 countries with this set to increase to 80 countries.

Editor’s note:

The choice of using a Chinese factory to export the EV5 is interesting. Until recently few JVs chose to do this due to having to share 50% of the profit with their JV partner. Probably one of the reasons for the change is the poor sales of Kia in China, last year the company only sold around 80,000 cars in China. In contrast the company exported about 86,000 from China, an increase of 125% over the previous year. Such figures are a far cry from Kia’s best year in China back in 2016 when it sold 564,039 cars.

Stellantis revealed that China’s Leapmotor will enter the Malaysian market this year. It is positioned as an affordable EV brand. CarNewsChina came to the conclusion that the first Leapmotor model to launch in Malaysia is the T03 electric hatchback.

Leapmotor is a young Chinese startup founded in 2015. It has been selling cars in China since 2018. Its current model line comprises four vehicles: C10 and C11 crossovers, C01 sedan and T03 hatchback. In 2023, Leapmotor sold over 144,000 electric cars in China.

Last year, Leapmotor signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Stellantis, the fourth-biggest world automaker, which includes brands such as Jeep, Citroen, Peugeot, Chrysler, Maserati, RAM, etc. They have created Leapmotor International, with Stellantis holding 51% and Leapmotor holding 49%. This JV focuses on exporting cars to overseas markets. Previously, Reuters reported that Stellantis is set to build Leapmotor EVs in Poland.

Leapmotor in Malaysia

On April 4, Stellantis revealed more information about its plans for 2024 in Malaysia, where it commenced operations in the country last month. This year, Stellantis plans to “revive iconic brands in Malayia”. Such brands as Jeep, Peugeot and Citroen are positioned as “professional lifestyle”, “upper mainstream” and “mass market”, respectively. Moreover, Stellantis disclosed that Leapmotor will enter Malaysia as an affordable EV brand.
At the same time, Stellantis, COO for ASEAN Daniel Gonzalez, told Paultan media that the company is working on introducing the Leapmotor brand to Malaysia this year. He also mentioned that Stellantis Malaysia is working on positioning and pricing the Peugeot e-2008 relative to the upcoming Leapmotor brand.

It seems that Leapmotor will first launch the T03 electric hatchback in Malaysia. Later, it will likely launch the Leapmotor C10 crossover here. Back to the Leapmotor T03, it is a small city car with dimensions of 3620/1652/1605 mm and a wheelbase of 2400 mm. In terms of powertrain, it has three e-motor variants: 40 kW, 55 kW, and 80 kW. It is also available with three battery options for 21.6 kWh, 31.9 kWh, and 41.3 kWh, which is good for a range of 200 – 403 km. Its price range in China is 49,900 – 89,900 yuan (6,900 – 12,425 USD).

Xiaomi will deliver 60,000 vehicles in 2024 and lose money in the first two years, a financial research firm CreditSights announced. Meanwhile, local media reported that the Xiaomi Beijing factory’s production capacity will be 4,000 – 5,000 units in April and gradually ramp up to 6,000 units by the end of the year.

This results in a possible 53,000 mass-produced vehicles in 2024, including 5,000 cars finished before the March 28 launch. Those 5k cars are called Founders Edition (FE) and were assembled in previous months – the company started deliveries of them on April 3. FEs are promoted to Xiaomi’s hardcore fans with various perks and benefits.
Another Chinese media outlet, MyDrivers, reported today that Xiaomi currently produces 300 cars daily, which is insufficient to satisfy the demand. The waiting times for new orders increased to up to eight months as of today.

Xiaomi SU7 Max waiting time is 29-32 weeks.
The Xiaomi SU7 is an electric sedan with a starting range of 700 km. It was launched on March 28 in China for 215,900 yuan (29,900 USD). The company received 50,000 orders in the first 27 minutes after the launch and 100,000 orders as of Wednesday.
Customers who place orders must deposit 5,000 yuan (700 USD), which becomes non-refundable in seven days. If they choose to lock in the configuration, the deposit is immediately non-refundable. The company reportedly received 40,000 lock-in orders as of today.
Lei Jun admitted that the company is losing money on its entry-level variant SU7 RWD standard. The deliveries of the SU7 Standard and Max AWD variants will begin at the end of April. The Pro will start deliveries later in May with an 830 km CLTC range. The current deliveries, which began on Wednesday, April 3, are only Founder Edition, about 5,000 cars Xiaomi assembled before the official launch.

Xiaomi also asked its suppliers to increase their production capacity to match the factory’s monthly output of 10,000 units. Xiaomi SU7 is contract manufactured by state-owned BAIC in the Beijing plant. On paper, the factory’s capacity is 150,000 units/year. Construction of the second phase of the factory will begin in 2025. After the second phase is finished, the plant’s output will reach 300,000 units/year.

Editor’s comment

Lots of analysts report that ramping up production will be critical for Xiaomi. Although increasing plant output to a reasonable level is important, I don’t see it as a major issue. Xiaomi has been famous from its early days for selling huge amounts of smartphones in no time. For example, Xiaomi Mi2s, its second smartphone, sold 200,000 units in a few seconds, leaving many customers to wait for another batch. Lei Jun is a master of hunger marketing, and he knows very well how to use the limited production capacity and overwhelming interest in its favor.
What matters more is the SU7 perception of safety. Xiaomi always sends any new gadget to its army of lifestyle influencers for reviews and publicity. With SU7, it wasn’t different, and we already saw lots of pictures and videos of wild TikTokers (Douyin) drifting in the streets, sometimes not very successfully.

Xiaomi’s Product manager even publicly warned that the Xiaomi SU7 is a fast car and that safety comes first. “SU7 is a car with 2 seconds of acceleration. Not everyone is used to such a performance. Please pay attention to driving safety and be sure to pay attention to traffic laws,” Thomas Wang Guo appealed to Xiaomi fans.
Xiaomi SU7 Max is all-wheel drive with 663 horsepower and 838 Nm peak torque. It weighs about 2.5 tons and is almost 5 meters long.
