BYD and Mercedes-Benz joint venture Denza displayed the Z9 GT shooting brake in Europe. This PHEV is aimed at rivaling the Porsche Panamera. Denza Z9 GT will debut at the Beijing Auto Show on April 25. Its domestic sales start is scheduled for this year. Later, the Z9 GT will also enter Europe.
Denza current model lineDenza was founded in 2010 as a 50-50 joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz. In this JV, BYD was responsible for the tech part while Mercedes-Benz did the styling. However, Denza didn’t sell well, and Mercedes-Benz diluted its share from 50% to 10% in 2021. After MB almost exited the JV, BYD relaunched the Denza model line. It currently comprises D9 minivan, and N7 and N8 crossovers.
The upcoming car for the Denza lineup is the Z9 GT shooting brake. It was first spotted in autumn last year next to BYD headquarters. Denza has officially unveiled this model, announcing it will go global.
Denza Z9 GT displayed in Europe
Denza disclosed the official name of this shooting brake is Z9 GT. It also shared a bunch of photos on social media. Denza shared the Z9 GT was tested and displayed in Europe. In fresh shots, it wears a revealing camouflage. We can underline its slender profile, sleek roofline, and thin, elongated headlights. Other features of the Z9 GT are retractable door handles and a sporty roof spoiler.
Denza shared the Z9 GT photos next to the Porsche Panamera and the Ferrari GTC4Lusso. We can see that the Z9 GT is similar in size to the Panamera. We will remind you that the Porsche hatchback boasts hefty dimensions of 5049/1937/1427 mm with a wheelbase of 2950 mm.
There is no information about the Denza Z9 GT powertain. However, it was previously called a PHEV model. Denza CEO Zhao Changjiang said the Z9 GT passed the moose test with 90 km/h speed. He also underlined the Z9 GT is ahead of Panamera and S-Class in terms of interior space, comfort and acceleration.
The Z9 GT will debut at the Beijing Auto Show on April 25. Its sales start is scheduled for this year. Later, it will also enter Europe. What is more, there will be a sedan variant of the Z9 GT.

On April 7, Chery’s iCar V23 made its debut in China. This car is the first model jointly developed by Chery and Zhimi Technology, and is iCar’s second mass-produced model after the iCar 03. Positioned as a pure electric small SUV for young consumers, it is expected to officially unveil on April 12 and launched in the second half of 2024.
About Zhimi Technology
Zhimi Technology was established in June 2014 as a hardware company that designs and develops smart appliances and is one of Xiaomi’s ecological chain companies. The Xiaomi ecological chain is the collection of enterprises owned by the parent company Xiaomi. Zhimi Technology’s product offering covers air conditioners, air purifier systems, humidifiers, electric heaters, fans, air detectors, and anti-smog masks.The news of Zhimi Technology entering car manufacturing was exposed as early as the end of 2021. At that time, 36Kr reported that the former head of GM Pan-Asia’s electric vehicle project joined Zhimi to take charge of the vehicle business along with many personnel from BAIC also joined Zhimi. And at that time, Xiaomi’s official response was: “Zhimi just formed a small research team out of interest in electric vehicles, and there is currently no detailed plan.”
Today, the small research team that Xiaomi refers to has now penetrated into many core positions of Chery New Energy as the Zhimi car manufacturing team. The Zhimi team is responsible for product definition, planning, and engineering, while Chery is responsible for manufacturing, supply chain, sales, delivery, and after-sales. Both parties will continue to create more products using this collaboration model, and plan to launch six to eight vehicles in the next three years.
The iCar v23 is designed with off-roading in mind, offering single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor four-wheel drive options. The battery packs are supplied by CATL, offering a cruising range of 400 km to 500 km. The detailed powertrain and battery parameters have not yet been revealed at this time. Additionally, its dimensions are 4220/1915/1845 mm, and the wheelbase is 2730 mm with an approach angle of 43 degrees and a departure angle of 41 degrees. The four-wheel drive version has a minimum ground clearance of 212 mm.
Similar to the iCar 03, the iCar V23 adopts a more hard-core square box shape along with round headlights, raised front hood, thicker bumpers, bulging fenders, and an external rear box serving as a storage unit.
The car is also equipped with hidden door handles that can be lit up, roof luggage racks, side steps, and pedal-shape rims, with sizes available in 19-inch and 21-inch options.
The interior uses many geometric elements such as the rectangular air-conditioning outlets and rotary knobs under the central control screen, coupled with a dual-color background. It is worth mentioning that a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip and an L2+ advanced driving assistance system will be present. The detailed interior configurations have also not been revealed at this time. We’ll watch closely for more information.

On April 7, GAC Aion and Didi Autonomous Driving announced that their joint venture, Guangzhou Andi Technology, had been granted a commercial license in China. The joint venture aims at the Robotaxi (unmanned taxi) field and plans to launch its first commercial Level 4 autonomous vehicle in 2025 with a total production of 100,000 units. Currently, the first model has completed product definition and is undergoing a joint design review.
Andi Technology is headquartered in Huangpu, Guangzhou, with a registered capital of 420 million yuan (~55 million USD). GAC Aion and Didi Autonomous Driving each hold 50% of the shares. The chairman of the joint venture is Zhang Xiong, deputy general manager of GAC Aion, and the general manager is Meng Xing, COO of Didi Autonomous Driving.
More specifically, the joint venture’s first autonomous vehicle is positioned as a crossover SUV, based on GAC Aion’s AEP3.0 pure electric platform and equipped with Didi Autonomous Driving’s autonomous driving software and hardware solutions.
About Didi Autonomous Driving
DiDi’s autonomous driving unit was established in 2016, committed to delivering Level 4 autonomous driving (AD) technologies. In August 2019, this unit became an independent company, DiDi Autonomous Driving, focusing on advanced AD technology research and development. So far, Didi Autonomous Driving has operated more than 200 autonomous vehicles in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.Furthermore, after selling its smart electric vehicle assets to Xpeng in August last year, Didi’s business focus shifted towards Robotaxi and driverless trucks. In addition to cooperating with GAC Aion, Didi-back KargoBot has also obtained driverless heavy truck testing licenses in Inner Mongolia.
6 Levels of Driving Automation
According to the Society of Automotive Engineers, there are 6 levels of driving automation. In particular, Level 4 vehicles can operate in self-driving mode within a limited operation design domain.
