Chinese media reports that Avatr has reached an agreement on the merger and acquisition of HiPhi and that work at HiPhi will resume this month.

HiPhi is this year’s highest profile victim so far of the brutal war for dominance in China’s new energy vehicle sector. Rumors about the company first began circulating in January. Then in February just after Chinese New Year the company stopped production ostensibly for a six month period. Payment of January salaries was postponed until the end of February. Then all salary payments after that were to be progressively wound down so that after mid-March any employees remaining with the company would only receive minimum wage.
HiPhi CEO and founder Ding Lei paid a visit to Changan in February resulting in rumors that Changan would buy a 51% stake in HiPhi. Changan insiders said the details on the Internet were not correct and that talks were ongoing.

HiPhi CEO Ding Lei (left) talks to Changan Chairman Zhu Huarong (middle) while standing between HiPhi x and Z models.
It seems that these talks have finally had some success, the largest shareholder of the Avatr brand is Changan. So far neither party is denying the takeover. HiPhi when approached by the media stated “The announcement that has not been officially released cannot be confirmed online, and the interview needs can be recorded and sent to the corresponding departments of the company.”
Avatr replied more ambiguously with “Through internal understanding, we currently do not have this information.”
With Avatr as a high end brand there is some fit between them and HiPhi. However there may well be a culture problem with HiPhi being a private startup and Avatr essentially a state owned enterprise. Byton, another promising startup, famously evaporated after the involvement of FAW.

Avatr started out as a joint venture between Changan and Nio. After Nio withdrew due to financial problems battery producer CATL joined the brand. Currently Changan holds 41% ownership, CATL 14%, Chongqing Chengan Foundation 11% and the remainder spread over various investment groups. The brand currently only produces the Avatr 11 SUV and Avatr 12 sedan with the new Avatr 15 and 16 set to join later this year.
HiPhi has been fighting for its life since the troubles came to ahead in February. Ding Lei has previously said that that HiPhi only has at most a three month period to turn itself around. The Avatr deal will certainly meet this time frame and mean that the company can perhaps live again. HiPhi since the troubles has even resorted to livestream selling to try to raise funds. In it Yang Yueqing, engineering project director of HiPhi, was seen trying to sell steaks and other items!
We will bring you more details of the deal as they emerge.

Pictures on Xiaohongshu, China’s Instagram equivalent, show a new Leapmotor model currently known as A12. Seen heavily camouflaged the car seems to be in a parking area belonging to Leapmotor, as it is seen surrounded by other Leapmotor cars.

From the pictures we can see that the new car which has the project name A12 is considerably smaller than the C11. Fast Technology speculate that the price of the new compact SUV could start from as low as 99,800 yuan (13,800 USD).
Although covered in stickers, we can see that the design is similar to the Leap C10 which was the brand’s first global car. The Leapmotor A12 has hidden door handles and it seems smaller than the C10 with the design pushing the wheels as far as possible to the corners to maximize internal space. Fast Technology estimate the length to be between 4.5 and 4.6 meters.

We can see the A12 is much smaller than the C11 behind
According to a photographed sticker the project name is A12. Chinese media believe that this means the car is part of a new A series positioned lower than the C series. However, given the low price point already of the C series this doesn’t necessarily make much sense and so it is possible A12 is merely an internal code name and that the final car will be given a name in the C series.
Sticker from the car showing the project name as A12
There are currently no spy shots of the interior but it is likely to be similar to the C10 with an LCD instrument cluster and floating center display. It will also have a traditional two row five seat layout.
Production versions will likely come in a choice of full EV and range extended EV versions with the latter having a range of somewhere between 100 and 150 km.

Almost certainly the A12 project is designed as a global car following on from the C10. Stellantis acquired 20% of Leapmotor in an October 2023 deal. As part of the deal the two companies formed a joint venture called Leapmotor International (Stellantis holds 51% and Leapmotor controls 49%) to sell and manufacture Leapmotor vehicles outside China.
The A12 will likely unveil late this year probably at the Guangzhou Auto Show and will follow on from the C16 which is due to launch later this year.

BYD battery subsidiary FinDreams will launch a second generation version of its blade battery later this year, possibly in August. One of the key upgrades in the new battery will be the energy density which is expected to reach 190 Wh/kg.

The original blade battery introduced in 2020 revolutionized the EV industry by making cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries have power densities that made them competitive with NCM (nickel cobalt manganese) batteries. This was done by arranging the individual cells into a blade like arrangement within the battery packs hence the name blade battery. Such an arrangement increased the space utilization by 50% compared to existing LFP batteries at the time.
When introduced the first generation blade battery had an energy density of 140 Wh/kg which has since been increased to 150 Wh/kg.

BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu revealed development of the new battery during a recent financial report communication meeting. Wang Chuanfu said that the second-generation blade battery will have a smaller size and lighter weight for the same endurance, and that power consumption will be reduced per 100 kilometers.
Fast Technology speculate that the second generation blade battery will help all-electric models exceed 1,000 kilometers CLTC range. Such a range would make cars fitted with them competitive with the solid state battery being touted by IM Motors and the semi-solid state battery now in production for Nio.
Shenzhen, China – 11102022: The e-platform 3.0 a dedicated fully electric platform for EV cars from Chinese producer BYD.
If indeed the second generation blade battery can achieve over 190 Wh/kg energy density it will make the them the highest performing LFP batteries to date. BYD claim that one of the key benefits of the blade battery is that they are much safer. The company is very keen on showing the nail penetration test under which an NCM battery bursts into flames after being penetrated by a nail but the blade battery does not.

It’s believed that the second-generation blade battery will not only improve the energy density, but also optimize the size, weight and power consumption of the battery pack, further improving the range and performance of electric vehicles.
Ultimately it should result in cheaper EVs and help BYD with its aim of selling NEVs at prices less than traditional fuel powered cars and give BYD a further edge in the price war. The battery packs will be smaller and lighter which should translate into lower cost. Additionally by taking up less space with the packs there will be more space for the car’s occupants.
The news from BYD comes close on the heels of the announcement about BYD’s fifth generation DM-i plugin hybrid system which should enable cars to achieve a combined range of nearly 2,000 km.

Dongfeng Aeolus, a Chinese automotive company, introduced its new electric vehicle brand, , in April last year at the Shanghai Auto Show. Positioned as a premium brand below Dongfeng’s Voyah range, eπ aims to capture the market with stylish design and technologically advanced electric vehicles. The first model launched under the eπ brand was the eπ 007, an EV sedan, which went on sale on March 14.

Spy photos of the new 008 first emerged earlier this month, and today, we have even more details about the vehicle, which is set to be unveiled at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show later this month. New official images of the eπ 008 have recently been released, providing a better glimpse into the design and features of this new vehicle.

The images show that the eπ 008 shares a similar design language with its predecessor, the eπ 007. However, it distinguishes itself by adopting a popular trend in automotive design—the seamless light bar that runs across the front fascia. The interior features a matrix-style lighting design, adding a futuristic feel. The hood’s lines and the front bumper’s three-stage air intake design also contribute to a more stylish appearance.

In terms of dimensions, the eπ 008 measures 5002/1972/1732 mm, with a wheelbase of 3025 mm. The vehicle’s substantial size gives it a commanding presence. It hints at a large rear passenger space, further complemented by the use of low aerodynamic drag wheels for the plug-in hybrid version and 7-spoke wheels with side-view cameras for the all-electric variant.
The rear design of the eπ 008 harmonizes with the front, featuring a seamless light bar with matrix-style lighting elements. This design language improves the vehicle’s futuristic aesthetic and provides high visibility when illuminated.

As for the interior, spy photos of the eπ 008’s cabin reveal a minimalist approach similar to the eπ 007 design. The interior has a dual-tone color scheme and is devoid of physical buttons. The steering wheel features a two-spoke, flat-bottom design, accompanied by a fully digital instrument cluster and a large central touchscreen display. The vehicle incorporates a floating console design, providing storage space beneath it, and the central armrest compartment also offers storage capacity.

In terms of powertrain options, the plug-in hybrid version of the eπ 008 will feature a combination of a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and an electric motor, delivering a maximum power output of 108 kW and a pure electric range of 154 km. On the other hand, the all-electric variant will be equipped with a 200 kW electric motor, providing an impressive range of 636 km.

With its futuristic design, advanced technology, and diverse powertrain options, the Dongfeng eπ 008 aims to establish the eπ brand as a prominent player in the competitive premium electric vehicle segment. Automotive enthusiasts and consumers eagerly await its debut at the Beijing Auto Show, where it is expected to make a strong impression.

According to statistics from Late Finance BYD make an average net profit of 9,000 yuan per car, that’s about 1,250 USD. Tesla on the other hand made over 8,250 USD per car based on net profit of 14.9 billion dollars and sales of 1.81 million cars in 2023. What this clearly shows is that BYD is going after market share rather than profits.

Such tactics are typical among Chinese businesses where a race to the bottom, winner takes all mentality pervades. Good examples have been bicycle sharing schemes, food delivery and to a lesser extent ride hailing schemes. All initially had multiple entrants who then undertook huge discounting and promotions in order to gain market share. With bicycle sharing this largely whittled the competition down to two companies Ofo and Mobike. The result though was that due to relentless competition they had created a business model that was not profitable and neither company exists anymore, although there are still a handful of bicycle sharing companies.
We are seeing a similar story in the Chinese car market where since last year there has been huge discounting from brands. China for a long time has had too many producers and too many brands, and the average factory utilization rate is 59% according to JustAuto. A healthy range is generally considered to be 70-80%.

With NEVs it is rapidly becoming BYD and then everyone else. BYD last year sold 2,706,075 cars in China, the next highest was Tesla at 603,664. By the time you get down to tenth place sales are only 144,155 from Leapmotor. BYD is setting the agenda thanks to its ability to sell large numbers of cars at low prices.
Despite the low profit level in 2023 BYD has actually increased its profit levels over previous years. Since the end of 2019 BYD’s cash reserves have increased by eight times. Before 2021 the net profit per car was actually negative. Although last year’s profit per car was relatively low it was still significantly higher than the 5,600 yuan (750 USD) per car in 2022.
Fast Technology asks the question as to whether car companies want market share or single car profits? BYD has the luxury thanks to economies of scale and its vertical integration to lead when it comes to pricing. For many other companies particularly in the NEV market, but also in the market in general, the single car profit that Fast Technology talks about might literally be one car due to the low sales.

From the beginning of this year BYD has fired a new salvo in the price war and has switched from an NEV the same price as ICE model to NEV cheaper than ICE tactic. Sales for March were the second highest monthly figures achieved by BYD, the highest record being in December 2023, and saw sales once again break the 300,000 level for a month.

This is beginning to sound a lot like an on and off again romance, Avatr are now denying that they are going to buy HiPhi. Yesterday an Avatr spokesperson bluntly said “Don’t talk nonsense, there is no such thing” in response to news that Avatr had acquired HiPhi and production would resume this month.

Rumors about problems at HiPhi began in January with HiPhi at the time refuting them. However, in February company founder Ding Lei announced the suspension of production for supposedly 6 months and outlined a winding down of salary payments. Ding also said that realistically HiPhi had a three month window to organize a turnaround.
Avatr’s comment has not dismissed that talks are ongoing. With the visit of HiPhi’s chairman, Ding Lei, to Changan back in February where he was pictured talking to Zhu Huarong, chairman of Changan, there is plenty of basis behind the rumors. Talks with HiPhi have even been confirmed by Changan.

Furthermore Chen Zhuo, president of Avatr, has previously posted a message in support of Ding Lei saying “He is a respected senior in the industry, and I look forward to the return of Mr. Ding and HiPhi.”
Ding Lei’s early career saw him at SAIC where he held various posts with Shanghai Volkswagen and Shanghai General Motors before becoming Vice President of Shanghai Automotive Group. Later he served as Vice Chairman of LeSee before leaving to found Human Horizons, the parent company of the HiPhi brand. Faraday Future founder Jia Yueting accused Ding of stealing the designs of the FF91 from his time at LeEco and using them to create the HiPhi X.
In order to maintain after-sales care to existing car owners HiPhi has resorted to livesteam selling. Yang Yueqing, HiPhi’s project director, has been heading up the sales and has been peddling various meat and drink products.

HiPhi’s Yang Yueqing seen livestreaming to raise funds

Editor’s note:

All Avatr’s statement dated yesterday has said it that it denies that it has bought HiPhi. It does not deny that it might be in talks with HiPhi for such an acquisition merely saying “Today it has been reported online that Avatr has confirmed the acquisition of HiPhi, I would like to clarify that this information is false.”

IM Motors, a subsidiary of SAIC Motor Corp, has been making waves in the automotive world with its highly anticipated IM L6. It captured attention for passing the moose test without driver at 71 km/h. Moreover, it introduces a new 130 kWh solid-state battery with a CLTC range of 1,000 km, which signifies the evolution of electric vehicle battery capacity. Its price and other details have been announced as preorders started.

The IM L6 is offered in three variants. Pre-sales prices are as follows:
  • Standard Max: priced below 230,000 yuan (31,800 USD)
  • High-performance: priced below 299,900 yuan (41,480 USD)
  • Lightyear Max (equipped with solid-state battery): priced below 330,000 yuan (45,640 USD)
During the launch event, IM announced that the 900V solid-state battery (SSB) is officially named “Lightyear.” At 400 kilowatts, 400 kilometers of range can be added in just 12 minutes. IM claims the CLTC’s range will exceed 1000 kilometers. This comes standard with the top trim variant, Lightyear Max.

The battery is not a fully solid state but a semi-solid state, meaning the energy-carrying fluid contains some solid species. IM Motors claims its 130 kWh Lightyear solid-state battery is the industry’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state battery with ultra-fast charging capabilities.
Other variants feature two NMC battery choices with standard liquid electrolytes, 90 kWh and 100 kWh, providing a range of 700-770 km CLTC.

IM L6 is the brand’s latest model. It measures 4931/1960/1474 mm and has a wheelbase of 2950 mm. It continues the design language of other IM models as a hatchback, allowing for more cargo space and flexibility. Inside, POPO seats are used. The magnetic suction discs on the back of the front seat can be used to hold a phone, a tablet, or a mirror for the rear passengers to use. It has a large panoramic roof. 60/40 split fold-down rear seats provide more expandability while carrying over-size luggage.

IM L6 is equipped with Nvidia Orin X, Qualcomm 8295, and LiDAR. It introduces innovative features such as multi-angle Carlog (using built-in cameras for in-car Vlog recording) and City Drive (providing local content on the car display). The car also features intelligent driving functions.
Furthermore, the vehicle is equipped with DZT dynamic tracking technology (identifying dangerous objects using a 360° camera). Its city NOA driving assistant is set to launch nationwide within this year.
The new car also offers an “Apple ecosystem plugin,” to mirror images from iPhones.

The new car will feature the first-generation VMC (Vehicle Motion Control) smart digital chassis technology, equipped with rear-wheel steering, intelligent electronic damping, air suspension, and more. This technology allows for unique maneuvers like “crab walking” used during tight corners, and advanced parallel parking.
IM L6 is equipped with a self-developed “Hurricane motor” with a maximum speed of 21,000 rpm. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.74 seconds. The dual-motor four-wheel-drive model has two motors, 200 kW and 379 kW. It can hit a maximum speed of 268 km/h. There are 3 options for the single-motor models, 216 kW, 248 kW, and 300 kW.
It was announced that it is available in seven colors including gray, pink, yellow, black, and white. Other colors will be announced later.
IM Motors is the collaboration of SAIC Motor Corporation Group, Zhangjiang High-Tech Park, and Alibaba Group is aimed at rivaling the likes of Tesla and Nio. SAIC produces IM-branded vehicles.
IM vehicles are only sold in Mainland China right now. In 2023, IM sold a total of 38,253 units. The sales figures fall far behind its rivals. Tesla sold over 645,000 units in China during the same period. Let’s not forget the new Xiaomi SU7 which received over 100,000 orders. Liu Tao, CEO of IM Motors directly compared the IM L6 with the Xiaomi SU7 during the event. IM needs to hit a home run with the L6.
