Surveiling Miniature Attack Cruise Missile (SMACM)

Lockheed Martin

2004

1707811021436.gif

It is a long-range, high-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle that can be used in a reconnaissance role or in an armed version to attack moving or fixed targets. With a range of over 200 miles, the SMACM can be launched from beyond range of enemy air defenses from F/A-22 and F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, as well as most combat aircraft. The SMACM includes a stabilized ramjet engine, a two-way data link, a multi-mode warhead and an all-weather seeker. It is similar in size to the small diameter bomb and is compatible with the BRU-61A ammunition carrier..

Tactical Advanced Recce Strike (TARES)
1707811151799.jpeg

Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH

2014

A modern attack drone developed to meet the requirements of the German Army (Bundeswehr). It can remain on station for more than four hours at distances of up to 200 km. The TARES drone can operate independently or with a remote ground controller, and can strike enemy targets behind enemy lines.

TARES is based on the Taifun-RS attack drone but expands its capabilities to achieve clear target identification, allowing the operator on the ground to decide at any time whether or not to engage a given target while minimizing collateral damage. To do this, a data link or target sensor can be added to TARES mounted below the radar sensor head.

Gremlins
1707811770040.jpeg

Unveiled in 2016, Perdix is a program that aims to develop small, air-launched drones that fly in autonomous coordinated swarms. Small aerial vehicles can be programmed to autonomously detect and track objects, and can be armed for strike missions.

DARPA has awarded Phase 1 contracts for the Gremlins program, which seeks to develop innovative technologies and systems that enable aircraft to launch and recover constellations of low-cost, reusable unmanned air systems (UAS) safely and reliably in the air. Such systems, or “gremlins,” will be deployed with a mix of mission payloads capable of generating a variety of effects in a distributed and coordinated manner, providing U.S. forces with enhanced operational flexibility at a lower cost than is possible with traditional, monolithic platforms. Phase I contracts have been awarded to four teams whose proposals cover a range of technical approaches to this challenging task. Leading the difference:

Composite Engineering, Inc. (Roseville, California)
Dynetics, Inc. (Huntsville, Ala.)
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (San Diego, California)
Lockheed Martin (Dallas, Texas)

The program plans to explore several technical areas, including:

Launch and recovery techniques, equipment and aircraft integration concepts

Low-cost, limited-life airframe designs that take advantage of existing technology and require only minor modifications to existing aircraft

High precision analysis, precise digital flight control, relative navigation and station keeping..

Low-Cost UAV Swarming Technology (LOCUST)
1707811930831.jpeg

This program is developing systems that enable tube-launched drones to fly in large, coordinated swarms. The research effort, currently based on the Raytheon Coyote platform, seeks to create swarms of drones that can autonomously conduct a range of missions, including offensive operations.
